The film was shot in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada on a $15 million budget beginning on November 15, 1981, and continuing until April 1982. The town scenes in the movie were shot in Hope and the nearby Othello Tunnels, called Chapman Gorge in the film,[12] while the rest of the movie was shot in Capilano Canyon, Golden Ears Provincial Park and Pitt Lake in Pitt Meadows. During the production Buzz Feitshans replaced producer Ed Carlin, who suffered a heart attack.

A number of pieces of the set, including those used for the rooftop chase, were sold to the production of The Matrix (1999) at the end of shooting.

An over-sized version of Dr. Schreber's syringe (roughly a yard long) was built for the close up shots of the needle being extended so that its surface details would be visible in the focal plane of the camera lens.

now, The Titfield Thunderbolt, 1953... Director Charles Crighton...This was Ealing's first Colour film, and was a great achievement for the small independent film company which was struggling to keep up with the big guys.

Godfrey Tearle was 68 years old at the time of filming, and despite his age, he was required to perform heavy labor like shoveling coal and pushing the Titfield Thunderbolt up the hill with George Relph. Soon after filming, he died of a heart attack.

The cricket-obsessed characters Charters and Caldicott were created especially for this movie and do not appear in the novel written by Ethel Lina White.

Leslie Gilliat shot screen tests, including that of Michael Redgrave (with and without mustache), and later remembered that when testing one actress for the role of Miss Froy, Alfred Hitchcock instructed him not to put any film in the camera, since he had already secretly and successfully negotiated for May Whitty to play the part.

Phil at the piano teacher's house, when he is fumblingly playing Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paginini," is actually Bill Murray playing. He does not read music, but he learned that much of the song by ear. The same rhapsody, specifically its 18th Variation, was also used in another time fantasy movie, Somewhere in Time (1980).

Although Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the stars of the film, 20th Century Fox was unsure whether the film would be a hit or not, therefore Richard Greene, already a well-established star, was given top billing, while Rathbone and Bruce were billed second and fourth respectively. After the massive box office success of the first film, Rathbone and Bruce received top billing in the thirteen films which followed.
