Tell Me Something............Anything!

What's this all about? Cleaned out the fridge last week, needed doing. When I finished it was absolutely spotless, looked like brand new.

Just gone in there to get the milk out and there's a big stain right on the bottom where that glass thing goes that you keep lettuce in and that.

All that has been in the fridge since I cleaned it is a couple of pints of milk, half a pound of butter which is unused and still wrapped, a block of cheese which is wrapped in clingfilm and inside a plastic bag, and a steak that was also double wrapped and only in there for a couple of hours before I ate it. So where can this big stain suddenly appear from? It's bullshit.

maybe didnt kill all mould. in a cool damp fridge it can regrow worse..

I don't think it is mould. It's yellow, like spilt vanilla ice cream that's melted a bit. Can mould be yellow?

Sounds like your condensate drain may be blocked..... Takes the condensation from the back plate of the fridge out to a reservoir above the motor to evaporate off.
If the small drain in the collector tray at the bottom of the fridge is blocked (usually with food products!), the resultant condensation will collect in the bottom of the fridge...:D

Bought a brand new fridge for an elderly neighbour years ago who had the same problem within a few weeks.... On inspection, discovered that the hole in the bottom of the collection tray hadn't been punched out at the manufacturing stage!!! Same result though....

Well, no use crying over it. :D Just don't see how I could have spilt milk on the bottom of the fridge.

I'll clean it up and see if it re-appears. Maybe next time the face of Jesus will be visible in it.

I have enough trouble with hi-fi equipment without the 'fridge hassling me as well. There is some sort of drain plug, I'll have a fiddle with that.

You are right its always important to keep any drain holes well cleaned out ...if you fancy rather more work have a look at the back of the fridge the drain hole will lead to a tube ...

Found the drain hole but what now? Does it come out? I did think about getting a screwdriver in there but I don't want to break it.

Usually clear it with a cocktail stick or the narrow end of a cable tie (or anything softish). Try pulling any debris out, rather than pushing it through if you can. But eventually just be sure that the hole is clear to drain away.

okay will do, thanks for the tip. Have to admit I never recall my parents having to muck about with the fridge, maybe they did it when I wasn't there...

Geoff's idea of pipecleaner may work, but you'll maybe push the debris further down the drain tube.....okay if you're satisfied that it's completely clear to the end.

No I don't ever recall the fridge being defrosted, cleaned, drained or anything. I recall my mother doing washing, ironing and hoovering up, but not cleaning the fridge. I think they only had 2 fridges in the 18 years I lived there. They had a new kitchen in about 1982 so the fridge changed once in almost two decades.

The freezer is still going now and that dates from about 1976. Don't recall that ever being defrosted either.

I once tried to clear the ice from my chest freezer by hacking at it with a chisel. Worked a treat - after a brief hissing sound the freezer defrosted itself :)

pull the fridge out from the wall - the drain pipe will exit in to a tray which sits on top of the compressor (heat from compressor is supposed to evaporate the fridge condensate and that tray can get disgusting).
I have use a long wire and a spray cleaner from inside the fridge to clear the drain pipe on our fridge, it can be quite worrying what grows there :eek:

Walking the dog this morning past a field of "pulled" onions (laying out to dry before collection?) - the smell immediately took me back to my youth and a brand of cheese and onion crisps called "Chipmunk" (I think), is it rose tinted spectacles or are modern crisps crap in comparison?

We should have a thread on 'evocative smells'.

Anybody remember the odour of Castrol R emanating from sportier motorbikes yonks ago?

(never been too sure how long a yonk is :))

:eek: Ooh no, I couldn't be doing with that - if that smell was at the bottom of my garden, I'd have to move house. That's how much I love the smell of onions. Agree about modern crisps being crap though. They probably don't use lard any more :(

That old 2-stroke smell is my favourite of all. I once followed a scooter club outing from devil's bridge all the way back to Lancaster, just so I could bask in their smoky oily wake. Mrs. P didn't share my enthusiasm, having no such nostalgia, so she just tore past em and then waited for me further down the road.

That's the thing though, "old 2-stroke smell". Modern two stroke oil smells horrible, as of course does the modern petrol it's used with (and I use the word petrol loosely, 'cos it ain't).

The building I used to work in had a stairwell that would have a different evocative smell almost every day. Various smells that would rotate.

One day it might smell like a corridor in an fancy American hotel. If you've stayed in one you know that smell. The next day it would smell like the school my mother taught at in the 1970s. Chalk and disinfectant. Then it would smell like rain on warm concrete. Some days there was no smell at all. I've never been able to account for this.

As you are now working from home, and are likely to be doing so for the forseeable future, has your company placed any requirements on you as regards 'working conditions'? I ask as I have heard some companies are stipulating the same working conditions as would be in place in the office, be applied to working at home. In particular that when at your home desk computer you are not allowed to smoke. What's that all about? Surely it's a case of "my home, my rules". Knowing you to be a smoker what are your thoughts on the matter?

It's never been mentioned. But obviously I would ignore any such restrictions, aside from the fact that they would be un-enforceable, both legally and practically.

I was incorrect in stating "some companies" want to stipulate working-at-home conditions. At the moment it is just Hammersmith and Fulham council who are want to introduce a smoking ban when at a computer whilst working at home.

Agree it is un-enforceable, and if wasn't then by rightsyou ought to be able to charge them for the extra heating you have to use on their behalf. :D

Wgat is it with some folk and bog roll? I mean, emptying a store in minutes and going out with 100 rolls or more. It's Moronic.

It's the idiot store staff/management who ALLOW the morons to buy it in the first place that are mostly to blame!:doh:

Firstly, as this nonsense 'panic buying' is starting to take off again, even though there will be NO national lock down and there *is* NO food shortage, nor will there be (same as last time), every supermarket should've introduced a maximum purchase quantity on all 'essentials'.

Secondly, if it were me in charge of a store, I'd not only strictly enforce the above rule, but SHAME the selfish, brain-dead fuckers at the till points, by LAUGHING at how pathetic they are and watching them SQUIRM, then have security kick them out on their ass!!:lol:

The satisfaction gained would be beyond immense.

I first came across toilets like that in Japan. The Japanese go for that sort of thing.

The first thing I disabled was the seat heating - horrible; just like someone has used it immediately before you. The bidet function is fine - if you like to have a jet of water squirted up your backside.

Not sure about the heated seat myself - I always find heated seats in cars feel rather strange at first.

I see the panic buying has taken a grip. Times for booking of available grocery home delivery slots have stretched out considerably, from a day or so to weeks now, if you can find one. It varies from one supplier to another and no doubt there will be regional differences.

Good job I saw this coming (again) and have always maintained a decent stock of essentials. Something I have habitually done and not prompted by the beginnings of the Covid scare in February.

I never had any problem getting stuff in the last 'panic buying' spree. The corner shop never ran out of bog roll or anything else. It's just the panic-buying people don't go there because they don't want to pay a few extra pence compared to the supermarket price.

All blown out of proportion by the media and then that sets more idiots off out to panic-buy. Self-fulfilling prophecy.

If I had a big surplus of something I'd just get a story placed in the media about how there is a shortage of it. Hey presto not only are people climbing over each other to get to it, they're happy to pay a ludicrous premium for it too.

I drove past the local Tesco yesterday and the car park was jammed and people were queuing to get in. The only time that is seen here is normally xmas eve.

Think I'll start growing my own stuff. Now where can I get a toilet roll tree? :D

Last time I went to the supermarket was back in March. I don't miss it one bit.

Totally agree on the first bit, and frankly it's more sad than funny, but I'm afraid you'll have to educate me on the concept of being 'sent out by the wife' to get stuff, as it's alien to me, other than when Del tells me she 'WANTS chips', at 10pm at night, and I've got to find somewhere still open that sells decent ones!:doh:

Oh, and after hearing about all this panic-buying pish, I wasn't sure what to expect when we went shopping yesterday in Lidl... I needn't have worried (as I've found shoppers here in general are a bit more sensible and considerate), as there was ZERO shortage of anything, including bog rolls!

So we stocked up on some Cushelle, which is the only thing Del with grace her bottom with.
