I do think it's an age thing, and your work colleague may have been an exception. There would be some who think quality went down the toilet when films stopped being black and white and the people stopped walking really fast, but they're probably all dead by now.
Opinions will have been extensively canvassed from young people (who make up the vast majority of film-goers), whose attention span has been set through a diet of social media and computer games, and need stuff in films to happen NOW and need it to be loud.
