This was the only produced screenplay for writer Diane Thomas. She had been working as a waitress in Malibu when producer/star Michael Douglas optioned her script for $250,000, allowing her to quit her job. Sadly, Thomas died in a car accident, while working on a new movie project with Steven Spielberg the following year, about seven weeks before the opening of this film's sequel, The Jewel of the Nile (1985). She was a passenger while her boyfriend was driving a Porsche that Douglas had bought for her as a thank you gift. The Jewel of the Nile (1985) was dedicated "In Memory of" Thomas.

The pistol carried by Inman during much of his journey is a LeMat model known as the "Grape Shot Revolver" due to its having a central smooth-bore barrel which could function much like a shotgun. A nine-shot (.36 or .42 calibre) "cap and ball" cylinder serves the upper barrel.

The 'Thunderbolt' is a genuine veteran locomotive, its real name is "Lion". It was built for the Liverpool and Manchester railway in 1838, making it 115 years old when it was used in the film.
The credited driver, fireman and guard were not actors, they were British Railways employees from Westbury depot and were originally to be uncredited extras. After director Charles Crichton spoke to them on location and realized they "looked and sounded the part", they were given speaking parts.
The locomotive "Lion" was damaged during filming when the carriage train is reunited with the locomotive. The rear frame was bent by the force of the impact. The damage was still visible in 2001.

Although based on a true story, Alfred Hitchcock deliberately left out some of the information that pointed to Manny's innocence to heighten the tension.
According to a Scientific American Magazine article from 2010, "Since the 1990s, when DNA testing was first introduced, Innocence Project researchers have reported that 73 percent of the 239 convictions overturned through DNA testing were based on eyewitness testimony. One third of these overturned cases rested on the testimony of two or more mistaken eyewitnesses." (Scientific American, "Why Science Tells Us Not to Rely on Eyewitness Accounts")
Balestrero sued the insurance company for the false accusation and settled for $7,000. This was barely enough to pay for the loan to cover his wife's stay in the mental institution. He moved his family to Miami, leaving behind his family, his friends, and even his furniture, which he could not afford to move. His wife continued to suffer from the impact of the events for the rest of her life.
As the actual perpetrator was caught and confessed during Balestrero's second trial, Balestrero was never able to produce witnesses on his behalf. The fact is that at the time of the robbery he was some sixty miles away and in the presence of witnesses.
