The third of four films made by husband and wife Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The other three are To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), and Key Largo (1948).

The photo of Vincent before surgery is shown in the newspaper and elsewhere. It represents the height of photomanipulation of the day, with carefully masked double-exposures and careful airbrushing. The lower half of the face is that of character actor [linkKenneth MacDonald. The upper half, from just below the bridge of the nose, is that of Bogart himself.

Based on the play "My Three Angels" by Sam and Bella Spewack, which opened on Broadway March 11, 1953 at the Morosco Theatre, where it ran for 344 performances. The roles played by Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray and Peter Ustinov were originated on stage, respectively, by Walter Slezak, Darren McGavin and Jerome Cowan. The roles portrayed by Leo G. Carroll and Joan Bennett were played by Henry Daniell and Joan Chandler.

Reportedly Steven Spielberg's favorite movie, he remade it in 1989 as Always (1989). The remake included the three main characters (Pete Sandich, Durinda Durston and Al Yackey), plus the characters of "Ted" and "Nails."

Although she appears to be wearing an RAF uniform and pilot wings, Dorinda (Irene Dunne) is actually wearing the uniform of a third officer in the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), as can be seen by her wings and shoulder rank flash. The ATA was a British government organization whose pilots were not qualified for combat, either through disability or because they were women. They were charged with ferrying airplanes around for the British military, freeing up line pilots for combat duty. Their uniforms were modeled on the RAF, but they were not military. It should be noted that in 1943, at the time this film was made, the women were paid the exact same salary as their male counterparts. Meanwhile, women transport pilots in the U.S. were receiving only 2/3 of a man's pay.

The P-38 Lightning, featured in this film, was one of the best planes of WW2 in the Pacific since it was faster than most Japanese planes, highly maneuverable and could accept heavy damage and still fly. It featured forward firing guns, including 20mm cannon, rather than the angled wing guns on most planes. It had two bad features. First, it was not suited to cold weather at high altitudes in Europe, which kept it out of air-to-air fighting there and limited its participation to low-level strikes. Second, when bailing out a pilot had to roll the plane and fall out rather than crawling out and jumping since the horizontal stabilizer between the two tails frequently would hit the pilot as he jumped.

Liz Fraser (Ethel) was still learning to drive at the time the film was made. In the scene where Ethel follows the army convoy in an Aston Martin, she kept stalling as she set off on cue, so ropes were attached to the front of the car, out of shot, and it was towed.

The gates of the former South Cavalry Barracks in Aldershot stood in for the prison gates in the film

Although Louis XIV, who was a real king, is a prominently featured character in the movie, the closing credits state that all characters are fictitious. This statement involves a loophole common to movies of this nature. The film portrayal diverges considerably from authentic descriptions of the real person, so the character is fictitious in the sense that the words and actions of the character are not claimed to be things that the real person said and did.

The early pre-release screenings of the movie were disastrous. The percentage of the audience who liked the movie fell into the mid-30s, and executive producer Mario Kassar realized the main problem was that the plot made zero sense. His solution: have the Ra character's dialogue subtitled, and made into information that presented a clear storyline. When these changes were made, the subsequent test screenings produced an overwhelming majority of positive reviews, and this carried the movie into becoming one of the surprise hits of fall 1994.

Saw that at the cinema when it came out. Starts well but gets progressively worse as it goes on is my only recollection.

Hard to believe that's almost 30 years ago.

In addition to playing a German Officer in this movie (mostly speaking in English), Sir Christopher Lee dubbed the voice of the Dennis Price character in the scenes where he is speaking in German.

William Hartnell made a career out of playing tough military NCOs in movies and on television. However, in real-life, he joined the Royal Armoured Corps in World War II, but was invalided out within eighteen months, due to a nervous breakdown. (Tanks I believe)
