Simon Pegg and Nick Frost made the film to demonstrate their love for Steven Spielberg's science fiction classics Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). When Spielberg got wind of the project, he happily suggested that he make a cameo appearance of some sort, in this case a voice on a speakerphone.

While researching the film, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost drove an RV along the route Clive and Graeme take in the script. During the trip, they stopped at the Little A'le'inn, where they encountered a chatty waitress and some belligerent locals. The encounter inspired them to include it in the script.

The Las Vegas scenes were filmed at the legendary Sands Hotel immediately prior to its demolition in late 1996. When the production team heard about the city's intentions to raze the historic landmark, they immediately scheduled a multiple camera setup to take advantage of the rare event, which is what you actually see in the movie.

Good film that. Steve Buscemi is great in it.

Todd McDaniels, a linguist at the Comanche Nation College, commented favorably on Johnny Depp's attempts to speak Comanche, a language with 23 to 30 living native speakers. "The words were there, the pronunciation was shaky, but adequate."

To minimize the film's overall cost, Gore Verbinski, Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny Depp, and Armie Hammer equally deferred 20 percent of their salaries.

Murder, My Sweet, 1944. film is based on Raymond Chandler's 1940 novel Farewell, My Lovely. It was the first film to feature Chandler's primary character, the hard-boiled private detective Philip Marlowe. Stars Dick Powell, Claire Trevor, Mike Mazurki and Anne Shirley.

For the scene in which Marlowe is drugged, Edward Dmytryk showed Dick Powell falling through a sea of faces. He borrowed a trick from "Saboteur (1942)" by having the camera pull back from the actor to make it seem like he was falling. He also had the camera accelerate as it pulled back, to intensify the horror.

In order to make Mike Mazurki more threatening, Edward Dmytryk had the sets built with slanted ceilings to force the perspective. As Mazurki walked closer to the camera, he seemed almost to grow.

Although in many ways a fantasy film, a certain amount of historical accuracy was intended. Most notably, not one horned helmet is seen in the entire movie.
