I read the book a long time ago (my Fred Forsyth period), and liked it. But somehow this film has passed me by :scratch: I'll see if I can find it, but only have Prime Video and Netflix. I wouldn't mind re-watching Day of the Jackal and Odessa File too. All good stuff :)Quote:

The film was named The Wild Geese after the Wild Goose flag and shoulder patch used by Michael "Mad Mike" Hoare's Five Commando ANC.
Ian Yule, who played Tosh Donaldson, had been a real mercenary in Africa in the 1960s and 1970s. He was cast locally in South Africa. He then brought his former commanding officer, Michael "Mad Mike" Hoare, who had led one legion of mercenaries, 5 Commando, Armée Nationale Congolaise (not to be confused with 5 Commando, the Second World War British Commando force), in the Congo Crisis of the 1960s, to be the technical adviser for the film. a role which he shared with Yule.
Another Andrew V. McLaglen film, and with Roger Moore in it too, along with Gregory Peck and David Niven. The Sea Wolves, 1981.
The film is based on the 1978 book Boarding Party by James Leasor, which itself is based on a real incident which took place in World War II. The incident involved Operation Creek, the Calcutta Light Horse's covert attack on 9 March 1943 against a German merchant ship, which had been transmitting information to U-boats from Mormugão Harbour in neutral Portugal's territory of Goa, India.

The Tiger I tanks were actually Soviet T-34 tanks that had been modified to look like the German tank. The US Sherman tanks were the M4A3E4 variant. Kelly's platoon also drove an M3 Gun Motor Carriage before it was destroyed on the hill, as well as several half-tracks. The Germans also drove a Kübelwagen.
Kelly's men were armed with a mix of .30 caliber machine guns, Browning Automatic Rifles and Thompson submachine guns, with few carbines or rifles. Gutkowski, the unit's sniper, was armed with a Soviet Mosin–Nagant M91/30 rifle disguised by a US bayonet lashed to the muzzle. The German soldiers were armed almost exclusively with MP 40 submachine guns.
