Blue Velvet initially received a divided critical response, with many stating that its objectionable content served little artistic purpose. Nevertheless, the film earned Lynch his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director, and came to achieve cult status. As an example of a director casting against the norm, it was credited for revitalizing Hopper's career and for providing Rossellini with a dramatic outlet beyond her previous work as a fashion model and a cosmetics spokeswoman. In the years since, the film has generated significant attention, and it is now widely regarded as one of Lynch's major works and one of the greatest films of the 1980s.

There seems to be a dislocation in time: the film starts with MacLachan finding the severed ear and reporting it to police. Later Maclachlan is kidnapped by Hopper and his henchmen, and taken, along with Rossellini, to where Rossellini's son is being held captive. Her son is being 'looked after' by the camp singer who at the time he appears in the film, is in possesion of both his ears. Yet later still in the film, when MacLachan returns to Rossellini's appartment, he finds the singer there: dead and missing his right ear. Have I missed something?
An interesting film - but not an easy watch.
i read it as 2 realities within one reality... but it could be anything with lynch. i just enjoy the ride:)
Lynch can be challenging. I still have 'Inland Empire' to get through, tried twice but couldn't latch onto it....................Quote:

The bar for sheer bizarreness was set high with Lynch's "Eraserhead", but all of his output is weird and challenging.
