Is it a chocolate alu foil?

It just shows you that looks can be deceiving. It is a mighty fine sounding bit of kit.

Shielding around the transformers to combat hum.

With a due respect, this is the poorest internals of any SUT I have ever seen and I have seen many, let alone 3000GBP price tag. I don't doubt any glorious sonic findings but even for standards of above average DIY work this looks so amateur-ish. I don't know what txs are inside but MCT used to be Tango's code for MC SUTs. I own their MCT-999.

I put this up on the forum as I have never seen pictures of inside a new koetsu sut or the original wood version online anywhere and thought it might be of interest to others.
Its hard to say what transformers are in there but MCT could simply mean Moving Coil Transformer and 20 for the Gain. It sure is made in minimalist style, similar to the way the cartridges are packaged. Some of the Koetsu cartridge bodies infact can appear diy ish too but its the internals we are paying for mostly.
All I can say is the result is very musical in the Koetsu tradition. For me, at the end of the day its all about the sound and not just how it looks. I'm happy and feel privileged to own this rare bit of audio design.

Interesting. I've often wondered if the size of Step Up Transformers bears any relationship to their performance. I've owned all sorts of big stand-alone SUTs, but am still amazed at the performance of the tiny ones in my SPU GTE headshell, which don't seem to suffer at all in terms of bandwidth, efficiency or anything else. As SUTs are only dealing with millivolts and microamps, perhaps it's more about good design, fabrication and quality, rather than size?

Electrons don’t care how tidy the wiring is or what transformers look like. If it sounds good then it is good.
