Spendor A2 Speakers First Impressions – Unboxing And Review
We recently took delivery of the new Speaker A2 Speakers, we thought we’d share a few thoughts about one of the latest Spendor Speakers.
The overall experience of unboxing the new A2 floorstanders from Spendor is quick and simple. The only small hurdle is removing the large staples which run along the seam of their boxes. Once you have located a set of pliers or robust scissors, simply pop them off and the rest of the unboxing process is plain sailing.
These speakers come sealed within a neat plastic bag. Completing the A2’s are a good quality set of spikes and locking nuts. There are four metal round fixing plates on the underneath of the speakers to screw the spikes into, giving you strong and secure housing for your spikes.
The overall fit and finish is of a very high standard – as we have grown to expect from Spendor. The only thing to bear in mind is that these speakers are not supplied with grilles.
At the rear of the A2 are a single pair of robust looking speaker terminals, there is no Bi-wiring option here. Spendor believing that a superior single terminal cross over design is better than using a Bi-Wireable design with four terminals on each speaker.
Once the A2 are set up in their listening position, it strikes you just how small in stature these floor standers are, standing at just over 75cm tall. However, they give an impressive soundstage for their size.
Listened to using a full Cyrus system comprising of a Stereo 200 and Pre2 DAC for the amplification and using a Cyrus CD Transport as the source. This combination was a pleasure to listen to.
The Spendor A2 Speakers delivered a warm and full character performance, with a good proportion of bass. The newly designed EP77 Polymer bass drivers coupled with the soft dome tweeters give a sound which is an easy listen, without being fatiguing at all.
The diminutive Spendor A2 Speakers retail for £1595 and are available in three natural veneered finishes (Black Ash, Dark Walnut and Natural Oak). Dark Walnut is the finish featured in the pictures.
