Here's some pics of the latest incarnation of my set up.
Amp is a TAC 300, cdp is a Unico CD Primo and speakers are Victor SX7. The box at the bottom is a Pure AV mains thingy which surprisingly cured a hum in my system and makes it much neater cable wise. Interconnects are by Gotham and from my mates garage for the speaker wire.

Whilst the speakers may look tattered and knackered they actually sound superb. I have a pair of Lowther Fidelios (for sale) and a pair of Audio Physic Yaras that have been ousted by these 15 euro "beauties". The Yaras have just been swapped for a Roksan Xerxes, this one actually (http://img687.imageshack.us/f/302017.jpg/) which has a modded R200 arm and a Dl 100 cartridge.
Future plans will be some active front loaded horns but they'll have to wait 'til the employment situation improves somewhat.:)

I've tried the hoover trick on the woofers but to no effect. They're sealed at the back too so no good to just push them out and back into shape.....
I used some masking tape to pull them back, but mine were synthetic not paper. But some sort of tape might work as long as it doesn't decide to become permanent. Be carefull :goodluck:

Masking tape didn't work. I may see if I can get something a little stronger unless anyone else has any bright ideas?????

Try other types of tape that may be stickier. Otherwise a bent pin, but it means making a hole in each section.

tried different tape to no effect. Also tried using a straw to suck out the sections. Neither has worked. Bit nervous of making holes in the drivers tbh - any other view on this?

cleaned the hoover's filter, used my hand as a seal and job done. Not prfect but better than they were. Paint job to follow.

Gosh - aren't they just! I thought it was the camera. How will you be painting them? And in lieu of any girls being around (where's Maria (radio) got to, over the last couple of weeks, BTW?) - what colour? I've spray painted wooden speakers before, works very well with a good sanding first.

Sanded them down this morning, now all masked off and will go and buy some spray at 2pm when the bloody shop re opens.
Have suggested bright red but have been told they have to be matt black. I've been taking pics throughout so i'll post them when i've done.
Too big for bright red anyway, but matt black ? Its a pity they don't make wood veneer paint :(

Gloss black it was. Just finishing them off. Well chuffed actually. I'm surethere will be those that can pick fault with the spraying,but they look a damn site better than they did...

After easter and can't wait. Been looking at phono stages today and contemplating flogging the lowthers to fund a half decent one....but that will leave me with just one set of speakers in the house

Nice paint job, there - yep, much improved.
How did you come across these speakers? Very retro! ... and nowt wrong with that.
For some reason they remind me of my old vintage JBL L110 standmounts. They were excellent and happily saw off many speakers at many times their cost.
It's great when you come across a surprise bargain like that. :cool:
Usng Gotham cables, eh? ... I seem to recall they were a Forum Fad "in another place". :whistle: :eyebrows:
Luvverly amp, too. Yummy.
A tempting CDP there - I have the Unico Secondo amp. Very nice ... I'm quite tempted by the Unico CDP .... :eek: .... how does it compare to others you have tried?

Thanks Jerry. The speakers were advertised last June/july on Ebay france with a buy it now price of 15euros but pick up only. Sadly the guy selling them lived in Alsace which is the other side of france from where I am and so I left them. A day before the end of the auction I sent the seller a message asking if he would consider putting them on a van if i did all the organising. He came back and said he was going to Brittany on holiday and would deliver them free of charge. The guy went really out of his way and so I bought him a very nice bottle of wine. We were on hols at the same time and so he arranged to leave the speakers in our old cr that I would leave unlocked - and thats where i left his bottle of wine. There are still great people out there for all you who have lost faith in human nature. "Do as you would be done by" and all that..... The speakers are seriously good and love to be cranked up, which i've been doing this morning, but at low levels they also sound lovely. Nicest speakers i've ever owned and I just need to get some proper stands sorted now.
The Gothams went in a change around last night and i'm using some old Cambridge audio things,but I do like the Gothams, if for nothing else they seem really well made. Speaker cable most people would scoff at, its probably not even 79 strand, but its all that will fit in the spring loaded connections on the speakers.
The amp was bought a year ago off the Wam and was a present to myself for taking a job I didn't really want to take.......they sacked me Feb 16th so i'm now planning my next business venture and looking forward to working for myself again. The amps is a 300B PSE job which if you look online is very similar to the affordable valve company's offerings -it's so similar it must be out of the same factory and rebadged in Germany.
The CDP is very nice indeed and has the benefit of being able to plug an external source into the onboard tube output, in my case the computer when listening to Spotify. I bought the CDP after i'd had a good month and sold some odds and sods and was the result of a days searching the web/asking on forums as to what to buy in my price range....I got a very, very good deal as it was a dem unit. Dana at UKD is a true gent and really worth seeking out if you are looking for good gear and great service. My experience of CDPs is quite limited as I only got back into hifi again 3 or so years ago and the only thing I have to compare it to is the Linn Karik I had. The Primo is fabulous and I can't see it going anywhere in the near future, nor the amp for that matter. Phono stage for the amp will likely be a Phonobox II or one of the Jerry specials off e bay, probably with the virtual battery PSU.
I'm really looking forward to getting the Roksan Xerxes turntable after Easter as it's something i'va always wanted to own. Yesterday I got rid of the woodburning fire in the listening room:area to make way for more tables and here is how it all now looks today.

Well the turntable turned up and is working very nicely, thankyou very much and despite having just bought 80 odd Hawkwind albums on CD, i've not played a CD in 2 weeks. The turntable a Roksan Xerxes with an Audio Origamied Rega R200 and a Denon Dl110 that I got off Robert at Inspire (A great company to deal with and with some stonking bargains on tts he's had brought in in Pex for his own range of TTs). The phono stage i decided was a keeper is the Graham Slee Gram amp (Bridge) which knocked spots of the Phono2 i had been using and the, now buggeres, Phono SE . Whilst waiting for the turntable to arrive I knocked together a record cleaning machine and i'm working my way through my grubby vinyl collection. Still a few to do hence the carnage in the listening room.
In the past i've owned several techie 1210s (probably about 7 or 8 in total) and a couple of LP12s to boot, but this combo really does bring something to the party that all the others have missed. One of the biggest differences is made by the Graham Slee phonostage i believe -it was only 30quid off the Wam but sounds great to my ears (still contemplating flogging the Lowthers to get a better phonostage and have a guy coming to see them on the 19th)
Amp wide there is no change but I did very nearly get into a deal for a Unison ResearchSecondo and i'm thankful the seller, Jerry, thought better from his side - I do love my amp.
So here are the pictures as it stands at the mo'. The turntable is sat on a very lightweight platform on a 14" inner tube -despite its looks it is perfectly level - not pretty BUT very effective and cheap solution.
Oh the speaker stands are empty wine cases filled with sand and kingspan insulation foam -they work very well but look a bit tatty imo.

Unico CD Primo - love this and again can't see it changing. My only comment is that the DAC input is USB only.
Squeezebox touch - used for interwebs radio in the main.
Speakers are still Victor SX7s but a new pair of speakers are only a few weeks away.(they'll need to be very good to replace this old set)
The white things the tt is stood on are ceramic things from CA electronics -work well on the tt. I bought the first set at a reduced price for review, then went and bought a set for the CDP where i'm not sure they are so effective.
The phonostage was payment for work don too and it's staying put...I like this a great deal actually!
The Epiphany Acoustics headphone amp, their Atratus cables were part of payment for a website I did for them. The headphone amp will stay as will the cables. I'm not a big cable believer, but they're well made and certainly don't do any thing bad.
Headphone cable is from Paul at RFC and was part payment for a website too -again well built and gets the signal from amp to 'phones without doing anything detrimental.
forgot this - the cable between phonostage and pre is Townsend DCT Isolda...I traded it for some classical records.
I desperately need new racks for CDs -what you can't see is a load more CDS in racks of different kinds and also on the floor.
The CDS in cases with typed spines aren't copies but rather originals where I stupidly threw away the cases and put the discs in caselogic cases...top tip - DONT DO THIS!!!! I reckon another 90 or so new cases and I should have them all rehoused in cases, though it is a ball ache of a job to do....
Other stuff you can't see that is lying about in the room is a Soundcraftsmen power and pre combo and a pair of gain clone monoblocs.
Speaker wire is Van Damme 2,5mm but this is due to change soon as I need longer lengths -prooll be Van Damme again as it's cheap enough.
Also to add there is a pair of lowther fidelios here in the office that are not being used and are up for sale.

Linn Index speakers fed by a T amp 2 which is fed from the headphone out of the 'puter -works fine for listening to radio 6 during the daytime. Will probably get a little DAC in time. The whole lot works well for its purpose of ensuring I have music available all the time.

Nothing new but the NVA P90 has been replaced by a cheapo switch box (The Squeezebox didn't like the P90 for some reason). I do miss the separate volume controls to be honest.
Also had a bit of a swap around to make way for new loudspeakers when they finally arrive.

it taken a few up and downs over the years but it's pretty good I think.
The SB Touch is my second dalliance with streaming and whilst i do think that streaming and computers are the future for Hifi I do still like to play my vinyl and CDs - the SB is used mainly for internet radio.
All that said, i've a little netbook on its way to play with that in the hifi set up.
The desktop system is a little "ungainly" but it does sound pretty good to be honest.
Very nice set up stupinder - you've got me thinking more about Squeezebox connectivity :eyebrows:

The speakers that are on the way are Autotech Mummys and to say i'm quite excited is a bit of an understatement. I've not had brand new, in a box and everything loudspeakers since I was a teenager. The MUmmys are made in Poland, made from fibreglass in the same way that yachts are built and have a 12" woofer and a waveguide. Once they arrive and have settled in i'll no doubt do a review. They will indeed need to be good to completely oust the Victors, which despite their tatty appearance, sound very nice indeed.
The CD rack is a work in progress. I have it in mind to build a made for purpose affair.....there may be shouting.:lol:

In the meantime a new turntable arrived -Wilson Benesch. Arm (modded rb250)has had a down payment put on it and i'm selling my SBT to pay the balance.:eyebrows: Cartridge will be my Audio Technica AT33EV

I don't think your internal decor is what the designer of the Mummy was thinking of when he sketched them up ;) - you need to go all Bauhaus and industrial to make them fit in, I think.
I'm going to design a speaker that looks like the Wolf Man :)

Like I say they've only been here a few days and the driver needs a little time to "loosen up" but they are completely effortless. Lovely with simply recorded music but also rock when needed. give me a couple of weeks and all will be revealed.

Yes this is a trait of speakers with good waveguides & looks like they have paid some attention to diffraction with the cabinet design.
Just like a face gives away a lot about someone's personality so does the look of a speaker give sound attributes away.

You need to try a Decware Zen, 1.5wpc of the best amp I have heard, within its output limits of course.

The Decware was a possibility had I been able to find one, but the 1.5w did put me off a bit. The ones i've got coming are Fi X amp (Magnaquest xformers) and Fi Y pre all built in the Bronx by a certain Mr Don Garber. With the 2A3s it gives 3 watts a side but you can put in 45s and get an output similar to the Zen.
Just need to flog some kit now....

Well, the deal on the Fi x and Y fell through sadly but I have managed to get my hands on a pair of Vacuum Tube Logic VTL 100. Made by David Manley and with 4 x EL34s per side they deliver 100W ...which is way more than I need but it may mean I dig out the old Victor SX7s and give them an airing again. Managed to borrow a nice little prototype pre too so looking forward to this.
Amps arrive in the next day or so I hope but here's an "open oyster" shot of the pre.

After a bit of fettling by someone with much more experience in fitting cartridges the vinyl front end is now really singing and the above is more by way of having a bit of a play with "new" kit.

First impressions are that they are VERY ballsy and do the bottom end of things with a good deal more authority than the 300Bs (to be expected really). Got back from the school run and the wife was belting out Screamadelica - she said she went into the cellar and everything was "vibrating" - oooh errr missus.
Lots more listening to do. Will do an ongoing "review" on here if no one minds.
The little prototype pre is working wonders with the amps and appears to be as transparent as anything i've heard. The amps are very sensitive - 775mV - and a pair of attenuators may be in order - sold mine a few months ago:doh:

They are indeed and yes, I thought them a bit of a bargain. They are the older version without bias adjustment on the top panel but they seem to be performing very nicely indeed.
To be honest I've only played rock/dance music on them so far but have been really impressed with pretty much everything the amps do. Great depth and width, fantastic bass grip and toe tappingly enjoyable....I suppose others would say they are very musical :-) They are addictive and I think this is in part due to the higher volumes achievable over and above my usual amp. Perhaps they are not as refined in the top end and mids as the 300bs...we'll see.

I found a significant improvement in swapping out the EH 12at7 in my 300B amp for a Mullard.
I was talking to a dealer friend of mine who owned the same amps many years ago and he was saying that there were a number of improvements you could make to the caps etc.
From what I have read, they are worth the effort. I like a nice leftfield choice!

I'm not sure if they will stay long enough to warrant extra spend on them ...that said they are quite addictive to listen to and sound fab with everything i've thrown at them so far - mainly rock, dub, a bit of Paganini (guitars) and ellington/armstrong.
Wife says the 300B has to stay but is equally enthusiastic about these wee beasties!

I've had loads of Techies in my time, Marco and I do love them ! I know they have their detractors but I just wanted to take one a little bit firther than I have in the past and see how it goes. Previously I've done little but add an achromat and whack on a half decent cartridge.
This time it's pretty much OL all the way as I have the arm already...then who knows ...different bearing, different power supply....as they say, "The world is your lobster" :)

What feet do folk recommend. LAst time I was looking Isonoe feet were getting god reviews.
Dunno about "god" reviews ;) but many here like 'em, although at least one chap here prefers the Vantage Audio style feet (don't OL do these as well?)
+1 for VA feet. Not expensive, not flash, not even pretty, but they do a fabulous job :)

Well my turntable still hasn't sold :doh:so I can't really move forward on this project but I do have an external power supply and a rega armboard coming - should be here by Friday (Thanks Stew!!!!:)).....now I just need to flog the Wilson Benesch tt and ...

Well I sold an amp and bought a used 1210 and had given the power supply which Mark at OL has kindly upgraded to current spec'. All added to the deck today with the OL RB250 arm I already had and the AT EV33 cartridge. Sounding great and I'm a very happy bunny!
Full review in due course.
