Got this double CD as a gift, and sat down for a listen. The first song came on ("Have You Met Miss Jones") and I was absolutely shocked at the clarity of sound. I was expecting some muddy recording from the olden times, and instead got this modern sounding, full blown orchestral track that kicks in with incredible energy. The next song ("You Took Advantage Of Me") started relaxed, just a piano and Ella, and then when the drums and the bass kicked in, I got startled. Sounded so palpable, so 'right here'.
What got me confused is that these songs sound as if they were recorded today, using the latest technology, while at the same time Ella's voice sounds so fresh and young and light. At first I thought that this must be some of those far fetched mashups where they take the old vocal and put it on top of the rearranged new recording.
So I jumped on the web, and got shocked when I found out that this was recorded back in 1958! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ella_Fitzgerald_Sings_the_Rodgers_%26_Hart_Songboo k) How's that possible? I wasn't aware that tapes from that era can sound so brilliantly present and fresh.
