Altec 414z , Cracked chassie.....

Hi,

Bought this couple of years back knowing it had a cracked chassie, I paid £0 for it! won on ebay for 99p and went and collected and he just gave it to me,
i hung it on my shed wall and never thought anymore of it, as when i first got it it was scratching and not working proper,

Now today i thougt i would take it down and give it a little test,

Wired it up sounded find, dug out an old cabint from the loft to test it with an enclouser on it, and seems to be fine now!

is the chassie fixable? or is it not worth fixing on this? i guess when it cracked it moved the cone in the coil slighly and since its been hanging it must of moved back enouth not to scratch now?

things are always worth repairing !

I'd go for glass reinforced plastic ....

remove the gasket thingly , which looks like cardboard ..around the area of the crack ..so you have bare chassis on both front and back of the crack.

then make a simple jig to hold the speaker in place and the crack closed then load up the trough that held the card board ..a set in the jig ..then build up a layer of same on the back of the chassis ...allow to set ...then rub down to make it as unobtrusive as possible .

Humm might be worth doing it, but at present its working fine, Can't understand it.

Sounds lovley to but the high end seems a little high for me.

Would benifit from a proper encouser rather than one of my old PA rig cabs i made 5 years back!

Slow set Epoxy Resin would be my choice.

If you look at it, it's broken at an agle, not a clean break, i recon once it's bolted in the two may pull back together! or maybe not..Jo do does the beak close up if you press the two togeteher at the break?

Use some of that metal repair stuff that is supposed to be good enough for use on an engine block - put the chassis in a vice to pull the frame in to allighment while it sets.

Not going to take long so may as well...

I would be a bit careful about putting a driver chassis in a vice. It doesn’t take much pressure to distort it and if you slip then you may dig a hole in the cone or rip out the coil wires.
A light application of JB Weld left to set while the drive is in situ may do the job.
