Just found this and there's too many pages to read through ATM...
Is it still "best system for £100"?
I'm tempted! :)
Alex has still got to do the rules but I think it's £100 excluding stands and cables and delivery cost(if any). So far I've got a Sony PS-T15 direct drive TT with cart and a spare stylus(£20) and Ditton 44 'speakers (£60) so if I can get an A&R A60 amp for £20 or less you are all in trouble:eyebrows:

More to keep this thread alive than to bore you all with how i'm doing with regards to the challenge, this is where my sub £100 system is at the moment.
Amp Aiwa Series 50 pre & power £4.95
TT Technics SL1800 gifted by David Brook
Cartridge Nagaoka MP15 £17
Speakers Castle Durham £15
Tuner Aiwa Series 50 bought with the amp @£4.95
SACD Yamaha dvd2500 £40
Interconnectors Pure A/V £5.99
So count it that's 3 different sources, Amp, speakers and interconnectors for less than £100, i'm feeling quite pleased with myself right now :)

Did this get forgotten about.
I've had a bit of a re-think on my system and it now consists of.
Luxman PD 264, which sounds better than expected.
Leak Delta 70, which needs a bit of cosmetic work.
B&W DM2's, which also needs a little cosmetic work.
I now need a cartridge and speaker cable for £30.50.
Well if i was to enter I would use the following

Yes I think they are from late 60's to early 70's K2 Celeste II's very good condition and bloody heavy for there size.They are currently stored under my bed :lol: along with a load of other hifi gear.:doh:

Please remind me of the rules again. So far I have:
Cambridge P50 integrated amp £30, off eBay
A pair of Eltax speakers £0, they were given to me, or a pair of Bowers and Wilkins DM2A speakers, £50.
So do I need just any source? or does it have to be either CD or vinyl replay?
I have a Cambridge T55 tuner £20, off eBay, or a Quad FM2 tuner, also given to me. Does that count?
I cannot produce receipts for the eBay purchases; you'll just have to trust me.

The T55 can sound great if it's working properly and the signal doesn't overload it. Mine needs re-capping although it still sounds ok.

The Dm2a's I got off you at Scalford are pretty bloody good. They are sat on a pair of Target R2's i picked up for £25. I gave them a scrub and a bit of oil and the don't look half bad. I put a Hadcock on my Thorens instead of the SME and I'm pretty happy with it all. Contemplating a new pre-amp, though.
One of the pair of DM2's is going to be used for bits, as I know someone who needs one of the Coles. The other pair are used for my upstairs, 'cheap as' system.
I'm down in your bit of the world quite regularly now, as my girlfriend lives down that way. I'll let you know next time I'm passing. Got any other cast offs? I was very tempted by your WAD amp.

Glad that the speakers are being used, got loads of bits to clear out, cables and interconnects and such, turntables, cassette decks, cartridges and so on.
Got a very nice pair of Mordaunt Short MA500 gold speakers, very clean condition and sound great, £60 if you are interested.
Let me know next time you are this way, we could have a mini bake off or such like.

Like yourself though i have no way of covering for other stuff such as my front end ;) I guess i should have cut the advert out of the local Friday Ads & kept it, but it didn't occur to me only because it was so cheap (£25) & totally non functional :doh: Funny thing was i did the very same for a Carver M1.5T power amp i bought years ago as it wasn't so cheap but worked perfectly :eyebrows:

I'm unlikely to be able to take my cac system. I'm sharing a room/system with Synsei and probably won't be able to fit everything into the car. My £10 speakers will be part of the system we're using. We will be next door so will pop in.
If anybody needs a rack or some speaker stands to put their cac system on and should be able to squeeze them in.
That's a shame Mark, but at least you'll be next door to say "hi" along with Synsei.
As Mike has said - please can you let us know in this thread if you intend to bring along a CAC system - that will help with planning how it will run, time allocation for each system, etc.
Ok, the Cheap As Chips challenge was originally born out of the idea that most "normal" people these days spend £100 on an iPod dock/speakers and think they have a hifi... There has been lots of talk about "the rules" but really, this is all about having a bit of fun, and so the rules have always been vague and will continue to be so! :lol:
Basically, £100 for your system - anything you want to include must have cost less than £100 overall. If you have blagged or been given anything for free, then that's fine - we trust you... ;) Similarly, I shan't be asking for receipts this is meant to be a bit of fun and not a tax return!
There will be a small selection (very small) of speaker stands and equipment stands, (although you can include your own in your £100 budget if you like) - but otherwise you will need to supply everything else (cables) etc. Please note - only the direct cost of the item need be included - no need to include P&P - otherwise, those who by chance find a pick-up only bargain 5 miles away are at an advantage.
DIY is fine (modifying or fixing) and no allowance need be made for time - the eBay or Car Boot hunters could easily spend more time scouring the web or getting up early on a Sunday than those wielding a soldering iron!
If you are intending on entering a system - please can you post here to confirm asap? There's no cost to enter (not sure if there is any charge for the room but I'll cover it if there is.) Once we know how many people are entering, I can work out how we will exhibit and judge on the day. I would expect though that people will turn up on the Sunday with their kit and we'll all help cart it up to the 2nd floor... You will have a number of tracks of your choice to show off your system. Not sure yet if we will have one overall "judge" or how we will score the systems, so any suggestions gratefully received.
Have I missed anything? Any questions? Anyone up for it, apart from me and Mike? :)

I'll have to leave the demo-ing of it to some other kind soul, though, as I have my own room which, going by past experience, I'll never get a chance to leave!

Surprisingly all three C.a.C systems did well at the show, with most people stunned by what you can do on practically a zero budget, many people commented that they were much better than a lot of other far more expensive set up's and one guy in particular told Alex that his Ram system sounded better than the £30,000 kit he has at home:eyebrows: praise indeed.
Both Alex and myself thought we would get one or two people in the room as it was on the 3rd floor and advertised as cheap as chips, but in reality it was packed all day long with folks coming back for seconds and thirds.
At the end of the day were they the best systems at the show? No
But they put a smile on everyone's face, and we had a great time watching peoples reactions :)
It was indeed a great day and the room was packed most of the time. As Mike says, It was great to see people's reactions or hear their comments, a few suggested they were off to sulk or cry, occasional "off to shoot themselves" and one chap was very grateful he didn't have his wife with him to see that you could do so well only spending that little!
It certainly made a lot of people take notice of what you can do for zilch, and so was definitely a success on that score. I was hoping we would have had more systems but after lugging them up all those stairs it was fine to have just 3, actually!

Chris - I was so busy I never got the camera out of the car! I think Martin took some though - I'll go into a bit more detail then on the "tiddler" system, but my main entry was a Pioneer PD-5010 CD Player (£18) Cambridge P50 Amplifier (£20) and the RAM 150 speakers (£58) - £96 in total.
I've just read comments from ronc over on the wam who hopefully won't mind me quoting what he said about this system "Cheap as Chips et al in the Fernie Room: great sound for a system costing less than the price of an Eichmann Bullet! I mean, £96! You're having a laugh, guys. Literally. At the rest of us spending fortunes and getting about 5% of the Sound per Pound. (Note to self: do not risk going in their room again next year)."
That kind of sums up the reactions all 3 setups got really! :)

to be honest Chris people were giving us praise like that all day, the opening post on the WAM "Biggest sunrises of 2012" by Mr Ian, mentioned a C.a.C system
" But for me to there were some real surprises - systems that sounded far far better than I ever imagined they would or could, so in no particular these really surprised me and brought a smile to my face. The:

Behringer based set up
£74 second hand system using JBL speakers (wish some one would give me a pair like that for free)
Not saying these were the best sounding of the day but surely proved that great music can be reproduced in many different ways and need not take a lot of cash or space."
Then there were these 2 guys they must have been back 2 or 3 times for a listen, they reckoned it was the best room in the show, and the shocking thing was, they were deadly serious, all day people were asking how we chose the individual items that made up the systems, and saying "what is it you guys know that I don't" as if we were making gold out of lead.

I didn't hear Steve's system but the RAm/Cambridge/pioneer system was amazingly good, and I don't mean 'amazingly good for the money' - it was just good, irrespective. I agree the system with the Behringer amps was amongst the best if not the best. The active ATC were also very memorable. Rage Against The Machine played very loud - no breakup whatsoever, very impressive.

Ditto my first Wigam Show. Pros? Good mix of classic kit not all my choice but good to see, the best was the last room 'Cheap as Chips' (£58 for a system anyone?) it was enough to make a grown man cry.

Well pleased to hear the CAC challenge was such a success guys. It was a brilliant idea that reflects so well on AOS and what it stands for. This forum has given me so much inspiration and knowledge over the last few years. It doesn't surprise me one bit that so many people enjoyed the contribution of AOS as a whole.
I'm just sorry I couldn't be there. :(

Very true David, i think many will have gone home and straight onto ebay, to look for a little gem, the Cambridge well unscathed is a little ambitious, literally all the pots needed a clean, i think once Alex got it set up he kinda left it alone and if you didn't like the volume well tough, cos if he touched the volume control he lost one channel, think i'll buy him a tin of servisol for his birthday:eyebrows:

I don't know about secret, Dave, I've been saying for years that Diamonds are great little speakers :)
Diamonds sold really well, but were ignored for years, hence the prices you paid for both the sets you bought. They won't be quite this cheap for long methinks :)

This was a first ever visit to the show for me, in fact I'd never heard about it until I joined AoS over a year ago.
The trip up the M1 northbound to junc 21A was not a pleasant one as the rain pissed down and overtaking Eddie Stobart trucks etc was hazardous driving and overtaking through their blinding spray, but, hey, I made it only to be confronted with one massive parking problem at the venue, nearly turned back and headed home. Glad I didn't because the show itself was one of the best I've been too and I've been to many.
Managed to meet up with some of the forum members, hi and secret handshakes again, and big appreciations for those maning the rooms such as the CAC one, that one was an ear opener and a half. At first I thought the yellow posties were for sale signs as the owner desperately needed funds for better gear or food, pints of beer etc, then I heard the stuff being played and thought to myself why sell this old gear it sounds so good don't eat or drink for a week :eyebrows:!
I was lucky, by chance, in being able to hear the Yamaha NS100 driven by a Canary valve intergrated amp... now I know what David Price has been going on about, these where good. Another room had original Epos 14s being driven by vintage valve amps, that was one muvver of a good sound.
I was not convinced by the open baffle speakers, especially where Marco and Martin had their decks, but I can appreciate why some people do like them. I guess I didn't hear their modded Techies to good effect??? :wah:
Will I be going next year? You bet the fluff in ya navel I'll be going, but if it rains I'm coming by water buffalo, 4 X 4 or a tractor and won't be parking in the next county down the road and asking the locals where the orgy is.

The cheap-as-chips system featuring Ram 150 large standmounts - sounded seriously fucking good, if it'd had a £1K pricetag I'd have thought it a bargain. Makes me wonder what some of us think we're doing?

We're chasing an impossible dream and, sometimes, it needs a wake up call such as the CaC systems to bring us down to earth. In fairness, those Ram's would be a grand the pair at least if sold these days and nearer two grand if priced to sell through Sevenoaks, where a 60% margin is needed (at least) to get the (commission based) sales up.

Dave I think you are forgetting far east manufacturing costs - the RAMs were good but not as good as, say B&W 683 which are a grand brand new:
