SME 3009 Provisionally Sold


Hi Guys

It looks like the SME IV is going to arrive. So rather than have gear around that will probably not get used, here is my SME 3009 Series II Improved Tonearm with Non-Detachable Head Shell.

I have haven't had much to do with this and don't know it's history.
I can say it is a good clean Tonearm and there are no signs of abuse or damage.

It only had very light use with it's previous owner. Who ahs owned it for quite a while.

It does not have it's original box or instructions, thought these are easily available from Vinyl Engine

Looking for £130 + Postage.

Judging by such details as the integral knife-edge bearing and arm-lift platform, the catch on the arm rest and the pulley 'block' used for the bias weight thread, this is a late version of the 3009/II (Improved) FH arm. All 'Improved' arms had plastic knife-edge bearings, apart from some very early samples which were fitted with metal bearings (so SME could use up their original stock; modifying them for the new design).

The only curiosity is the use of the original style of lever used for the arm-lift. This is straight with a smooth finish on the plastic tip. Later ones were cranked (so as to allow the (retro-) fitting of the FD200 damping dashpot mechanism) and have a 'grooved' plastic tip.

Most SME 3009s go for around £200 on eBay, depending on condition. So your offer price of £130 is very reasonable for an arm in such good condition.

Cheers for your info. Much appreciated and useful to me.
When I bought the whole system TT, arms, cartrdiges, quality stand, accessories, and not forgetting a good 200 or more vinyl. It all did not cost me a great deal.
I'm not a greedy person and felt I should pass it on just through the AoS at a reasonable cost,as a gesture to it's members.
That's also put into consideration of my lack of knowledge of it's history and ulimately the fully working operation of the arm.
Though everything seems fine to me.
I'm not a novice by any means but you never quite know. As I have never used one of these before and no nothing really about them.

Just a quicke... I notice you're using a Blue Horizon mat on your new T/T - what do you think of it?

I've got one on my Techie, and think they're quite special :cool:

The mat was described to me a Cork and Rubber compound.
The manufacture was not known to me, so cheers for that one.

I haven't had chance to compare it with anything else at the mo.
Though it seems like a nice bit of kit
Though I do have an Acromat (your's if I remember rightly) and a Sound Dead Steel to do some playing with.

Will let you know how I fair with them.

My current plans are to make new arm boards this week (the original ones are well drilled out and incorrect sizes) and move the Uni-pivot to the LHS and face it across the back, for ease of use.
I will have an new tomearm arriving at some point. But will leave that a secret for the time being.
