Recently posted on a thread and was firmly instructed to introduce myself here. The damnable cheek of it!

OK, here we go…

I consider myself an audio veteran. I was trained in Ortofon SPU use and was there when the Decca London was launched and its high frequency blast wiped out the ceramic cartridge threat forever. I then fought valiantly in the Quad Wars (JBL Full Range Driver Fusiliers, Sansui QS Division). There were no winners in that conflict but I still believe that our side was morally superior.

I never adapted to the sound of the CD but I’m no digital hater - nowadays most of my music arrives from the Internet cloud via a homebrew PC music server. I do maintain and nurse along a direct drive turntable for old time’s sake.

Amplification is provided by a vintage Luxman R 1040 and the end result is delivered by a pair of Boston Acoustics ‘Classic Series’ CS 226 floor standers.

I’m no believer in interconnect or speaker cable differences but harbour no ill will to the Brotherhood of the High-End Interconnect. Whatever floats your boat.

I remain astonished how most listeners ignore room treatments to improve sound quality and enthusiastically use bass traps and acoustic cushions in room corners, etc. As you can easily surmise from that statement I have no ‘Significant Other’ to nag me into submission.

Thanks for the welcome. One hell of a system you have there! Nice to meet another Nagoaka user and was delighted to note the inclusion of Behringer kit - a clear sign of the audiophile with an open mind!

When Quadraphonic arrived I was working in the trade and about eighteen months into the debacle I listened to the three surround offerings: Technics CD-4 (meh, really just a desperately fussy vinyl implementation of surround), CBS SQ and the barely tweaked beyond ‘Basic Matrix’ Sansui QS system.

At that time Sansui were streets ahead of other Japanese manufacturers in sound quality so their rather weak Quad implementation sounded generally better than the others on offer. Well - till you got it home, anyway.

I purchased a Sansui QRX-5500 receiver along with four deadly expensive Sansui speakers that featured single 8” full range JBL drivers (Sansui were JBL's Japanese distributors at the time). Felt like dog with two (ahem) tails...

At this point I should explain QS had a hardly staggering theoretical 18 dB difference in front/rear separation but I would gamble the farm on it being around 6 dB in the real world.

Disappointment swiftly followed but once I got over the shock of realising I basically had two stereo systems at opposite sides of the same room I kind of fell in love with the sheer PA style volume on offer. Hey, I never claimed I’m a sophisticated listener!

If you were drunk you could almost believe that there was a real surround effect (NOTE: The consumption of at least one bottle of single malt is recommended to create this aural fantasy).

And as to the other matter, the Luxman has been my favoured amp due to its sweet sound and holographic imaging abilities.

No, quite the opposite!
I like the Sansui stuff of that era - the QS was, as you say just a way of getting an extra stereo in the same room. different speakers & a swivel chair would be the way to do it!
Your Luxman - you'll do fine for me! I have a bit of a thing for big old receivers, you see.

Now see, the swivel chair idea never even occurred to me. You Sir are a genius.

Back then I do remember coming home one night to witness two mates (one of whom had a key to my flat) both rapturously listening to Deep Purple while facing the rear speakers...

I have pretty catholic musical tastes and enjoy most genres but tend to avoid the leading edge stuff from the likes of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.

The main areas of interest include Rock, Jazz, New Age, Classical and World. Anything apart from (save us) Country and Western, really.
