No Power to Mouse. Help!

Hi all,

I have one of those most annoying of problems; the intermittent kind.

I have an iMac and I use an Apple wired mouse. Recently, the pointer froze and I couldn't get it to work. I've tried all kinds of things, but eventually switched to my spare old windows mouse. Then one day I plugged the apple mouse in again and it worked! Then one morning, upon waking the iMac the mouse was frozen again. Same thing, if I plug it back in, it works, but only after leaving it unplugged for a while.

So, the mouse works, but only sometimes. It's not the USB port at fault cos I've tried several with the same result. Now, I don't know anything about electronics, but is there a chance that the mouse is retaining some power and then when it receives power from the newly woken Mac, well, would that cause it a problem? How can I test this?

This is actually the 2nd mouse it's happened to. I decided the first one had had it and put it in the drawer, but now I'm not so sure. It's bizarre really.

Any ideas?

The problem seems to be that the mouse loses its ability to instruct the USB host to lift the USB port gate to allow data and power transfer if left connected at time of boot sequence.
Average life for a gaming mouse for me, 18 months before I get problems like this.

If you unplug the mouse and then plug it back in the USB port recognizes the device again.
The only solution I’ve found is to replace the mouse.

This is an amazing coincidence..I've been using a Logitech wireless mouse & yesterday it wasnt sending a command sometimes, changed the batteries & still being a pain.I use wireless mouse & keyboard as i hate wire all over. Anyway i connected my other wired mouse up & all ok.Nothing suprises me with stuff these days.

I bought a wireless mouse to replace it after trying it in the shop. Nice and light. That was of course without the batteries in it! It's too heavy. It might be only an extra 50g but it's so noticeable, and the weight distribution is towards the back of the mouse too, so it feels weird to me.

I prefer the apple wired mouse.

The one i'm using now is also a Logitech (the ones with the big red balls)..You don't have to move these at all, i find them much easier than standard style mouse.

I have a wireless keyboard that has to be within a foot of the recover to work... And even then it leaves out letters ...
I daren't replace it though as I like the action of the keys and haven't seen another I like ... It's a right ball ache!
