So much choice out there, best thing is listen to as many as you can. If you like your valve amp, you may be surprised at how good a full range driver can sound with it.
hi ali, can you explain a full range driver.:scratch:im not stupid really,im sure if you explain i,ll know what you mean;)

A speaker with just one driver that covers the whole frequency range, or like the case of my OB's, a Visaton B200 8 inch driver which works from 200Hz up, while the bass is covered by two Eminence Alpha 15 inch woofers. You'd be welcome to bring the amp over anytime if you'd like to try them out. They have compromises like anything else, but a full ranger seems to have a coherence that is lacking in two or more way speakers.
that is again a very kind offer,is HZ band width:scratch:,did you build your own ob'smaybe you could post a picture,my brother and i may at somepoint take up your very kind offer, brother is into hifi hubby's NOT:lol:HE LIKES THE SOUND OF HIS BOAT ENGINE.regards maria.

Maria,
See if you can get to listen to some Avantgarde Horns. They're distributed by Graham Tricker at GT Audio in Denham near London (01895 833099 www.gtaudio.com). I have a TRON Voyager 6W valve amplifier driving my AG Duos and I don't need any more as the Duos are 104dB/W. The Avantgardes are my best ever upgrade in over 30 years of hi-fi. GT often has second hand pairs for sale, as his customers trade up.
Good luck,
Charlie

Sorry, forgot to say Hz is frequency-200Hz would be upper bass going into lower mid.
ali thanx for the pic, that is some size of drivers, and dont worry i will keep your offer in mind, your a gent:)
hi charlie, thanx for the reply,i think these may be out my leagueand may be a bit big:(though you never know, the NANO G2s are the smallest though i dont know the price,i also saw they deal in ayon which is what i have so you never say never, thanx again maria,ps i bet yours sound good, how long have you had your speakers if you dont mind me askin, regards maria.
what do you recommend
I can't recommend anything. I've never used valve amps or the sorts of speakers that go with them. But big speakers is generally a good idea. To get anything like Hi-Fi you need to move large amounts of air.
Mine just wines about ironing
Now I did think of that response. However, I weighed up the comic value of it against the grief value, should my wife see that I said it, and guess what? ;0)
hi MRpig yeah speakers on stands is a no no for me,how abot doing some ironing seen your still awake:)it would get you brownie points:lol:regards maria
how about doing some ironing seeing you're still awake? It would get you brownie points
Or, I could just live without them?
Going to bed, as it's stupid o'clock...
My speakers are big, and on stands ;0)
im sure your speakers sound wonderful,im not knocking speakers on stands,i just prefer floor standers,im just putting the ironing away and im of to bed,g,night MR pig:)

I spent 1 month in October looking for Jesus in ISRAEL
I know him, all you have to do is ask! ;0) I'd love to go to Israel.
Yeah, a lot of people like floor-standers. They don't stop to consider if they offer the best technical solution for their situation, they just want speakers that look pretty. A lot of the systems I've heard that sounded rubbish had floor-standers where a good stand-mount would've worked better.
Not that floor-standing speakers are inherently bad of course, not at all. Just that as soon as you start putting limits on your choices, other than the ones imposed for technical and performance reasons, you're making an already hard game harder. You want the best speaker for the job, period, whatever it looks like.
i will take into consideratin what you have said MR Pig,i am now open to all options:)thats cool that you know THE BIG MAN,i should have taken you with me and i might not have got lost so often;)
should have taken you with me and I might not have got lost so often
Don't know that I fancy getting lost in Israel! Did you visit the settlements?
hi MR Pig,i went to Ramallah,Nablus and bethlhem which are all in palastine, which were all very intrestin and the people weve very happy to see any tourists there, they made me very welcome, the Gazza strip i did not visit,my mother would have MURDERED ME:I also went to Tel Aviv, casarea,Hifa,Tsfat,Sea Of Galilee and Nazereth and JERUSALEM,I went on my own not hubby's idea of fun:(
Sounds great, fascinating place and the centre of world history. Maybe one day I'll go.

OK so I'm going to add my twopenneth worth.
I've had big floorstanders but always come back to small standmounts, why...? Cozz I love the intense stereo image that a standmount produces and I love the lack of colouration caused by very rigid small side panels. I've not yet heard a large or huge speaker produce a truly accurate sound in the way a small standmount does. I do understand though that small speakers in general produce a small sound without the great big scale of a floorstander but for me I love a truly transparent sound with intense stereo imaging. I also love the Tannoy dual concentric and KEF Uni-Q drivers.

You can't argue with that. I've had three pairs of Linn Kans and now have Isobariks, which obviously use the same midrange and treble drivers. With the exception of bass extension, weight and volume potential the Kans beat Isobariks in every way. No doubt for exactly the reasons outlined above. You can get big speakers to sound fantastic but it's a lot more work than it is with smaller speakers. People often clamour after deep bass but I tell them to think carefully as it's the hardest and most expensive thing to do.
since joining this forum, I even thought should I keep the speakers and buy a turntable
If you like the speakers I would certainly consider keeping them. Speakers are only ever as good as what's fed into them and can improve dramatically when you upgrade your source, amplifier etc. I certainly wouldn't rush to change them unless you've actually heard something else that you think is a lot better.
Turntables are nice, they sound so much better than CD players so are always good to have around. Not having any records doesn't help though. There are plenty available, even new, but they are not cheap. Check out the vinyl on line, even Amazon has tons.
I don't know where you live but there are some good shops in Glasgow and one in Stirling, I don't know about Edinburgh but I assume there will be. Lots in charity shops too but they're often trashed. Worth a look though.

Providing that you have a quality upstream source (i.e. excellent transport and amplification), as well as sufficiently large listening room, nothing beats planar speakers. These are the most naturally sounding colorless speakers with the best soundstage and imaging.
However, these speakers are merciless if you have sub-standard player and/or amplifier. They very eagerly reveal all the flaws and blemishes that not good enough electronics produce.
To make things even more complicated, these speakers need room to breathe, and will sound very bad in smallish, congested spaces.

Hi Maria,
I'll throw my tuppence-worth in the ring;
There's some very exotic kit on this site, and I'm not for one minute going to try to suggest anything that will outperform other suggestions.
I've no idea of your budget, or room size, so I'll just apply my constraints to the selection process.
For myself I prefer small footprint floorstanders, as a nice compromise between sound quality (I love the extra bass a floorstander gives), and that horrible word 'convenience', but it all depends on your listening space I suppose.
For myself I use modified Mission 753s (I've replaced the drivers as the originals were a little woolly), the 75 series were excellent value (probably for me when mission were at their best) as the cabinets were very heavy duty for a 'budget' floorstander.
The 752 came out a little after I'd bought my 753s, and although I like my 753's now I've modded them, as a 'stock' model I think the 752s are excellent small footprint floorstanders...there're a couple of pairs up for grabs on ebay
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=mission+752&_sacat=0&_dmpt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_HiFiS peakers&_odkw=mission+782&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
The rosewood pair are the 'Freedom' ones, a later edition with a silk tweeter, although my 753s share the same metallic tweeter as the originals, and I like it. It was felt to be a little aggressive, so they moved to silk, all depends on the characteristics of your system I suppose.
I suppose the best recommendation is that if my current speakers blew up I'd be after a pair of these straight away! Though not in rosewood! Too garish for me! any movement away from black makes me nervous :)
They were about £700 new around 1990, so you should be able to get them for about £200 or so. I like a bargain, must be my Scottish half coming out ;)

I'm after some new speakers.
What I've found is that some new speakers have actually gone backwards in sound presentation. Shrouded in expensive finishes and shiny bezels. For example, I had some B&W CM7's that (I thought at the time) sounded great until I heard some old Celestions again... and that got me thinking.
So, after about 6 years I'm looking at some old Celestion or to push the boat out and get some Prestige Tannoy's but although they are chalk and cheese in presentation I still want that drama.
I've had some 7k speakers in the past and loved them but found that sometimes a £1500 speaker set up can sound just as good if not better so what gives!?
My confusion at the moment is that I have a choice of what classic speaker to go for or to go for something expensive. I've heard the argument for ESL's but I like rock music and I like it loud-ish so they may not be the awnser.
I always think the best advice is hear as many speakers as you can short list afew you really like and then hear them in the context of your own room and system.
I know for most flat earhters its source first, but theres a lot to be said about getting the speakers right. First of all it about what you value in terms of sound I like a holographoc sound with lots of scale and dynamics, it also needs to have plenty of speed and coherence for me to cope with the music I listen too. Also your room will influnce your choices

If it's ESL-like clarity you want, but with the ability to play loud with bass, an OB type speaker may suit if you can live with the size.
