View Full Version : Two worlds divided

Who believes the vintage & modern world Hi-Fi enthusiasts should keep their opinions divided. They are just that 'two worlds apart'.Arguments in forums happen a lot because of the two worlds collide

For instance a fully fettled vintage system will never sound anything like a modern system hence the views of the modern man & his system wil be that the vintage rig will sound medicore to him, none of these modern fancy attributes that modern enthusiasts seem to thrive on! the thought of narrow bandwith, muted frequency extremes, etc etc is a definate no no!

Of course it's every man to his own but doesnt alter the fact the owner of the newer system thinks the old one sounds tripe & vice versa. In my view he's obviously wrong but there you go.

..........................................

Mixing new & old: seem great on paper but never truly works for me, cetain aspects of this will not work imho...

Example: myself truly into vintage equipment of a certain era, no modern gadgets included, but will not use a turntable for reasons! i'd like to but can't..I have to rely on CD player into vintage amp speakers, this bugs me to death as i'm not a fan of CD & hate having a player in the system. having CD totally destroys all i believe in, but what can i do??

The only answer yet is to record all my CD's to reel to reel & listern to the tapes in all analogue glory,i'm happy to do this but like buying a digitally remastered vinyl record it's going slightly against the grain. i actually find much better tape recordings from CD to tape than i ever did from record to tape even though it's very hypocrytical of me to do this . you'd be correct in the asumption that i'm trying to fight technology, i am, analogue is what i know & prefer the sound of.

Modern man: Exchanges his CD for lossless files
Yesterdays man: should be purely listerning to 100% Analogue source

What does this make me? someone i'm not happy being. :(

Admitedly my obsession for everything late 60's/Early '70's does cloud a lot of things in my life but i try to be a true believ'r in what i do & try my best to block out anything modern age related (if i could dump computers i would as they are so influential but an evil nessesity,an open doorway to what makes me tick, ironic i know).but the above dilemma makes me wanna throw the towel in sometimes but bounce back as modern age does not work with me. is it so wrong to live in a time thats long gone? tortured soul springs to mind.. money for me certainly plays a massive factor in it, one of the primary reasons based on the music i listern to why i can't use a Turntable.

can i just ad that all this is my obsession with the late 60's/early '70's looks of hifi & not actually the hifi itself, Authenticity of the period is what i thrive on. :mental:

appipoliloggies if it's a bit ill contrived one of my weaknesses is putting forth issues in writing

A man who has been there done it ad knows what he likes.
If i knew what i was doing i would buy vintage but i dont, its been a long time since ive heard a proper vintage set up so ignorance is bliss. Im more likely to go the modern clone way and buy a one box digital box of tricks. If it wasnt for the entheusiasm for analogue o AOS i would never have put so much TLC into my old DJ deck.

I enjoy the best of both. I love getting great analogue>digital transfers, and that depends most for it's success on the quality of the old analogue elements of my system. I love the convenience of FLAC; I have a fantastic digital recorder in my Tascam HD-P2, but I love the tactile and mechanical beauty of my tape gear.

I think it's important not to align to any particular ideology, and that's as true for hi-fi as it is for politics, lol.

You should look at some of the more basic Linux distributions Andr'e as well, if you're looking for a way of using the internet without the trappings of Babylon. The internet was very much around in 1973, much of it much earlier. It's only the 'World Wide Web' and HTTP that came later, and frankly that just made it easier to access and easier to share the masses of information we now take for granted.

But thats it Nick i don't want anything to do with anything like computers or files, i'm not sure where the 1973 thing came from, i may have said that music started getting tripe by then, but my era is really 1969-71..i much prefer to live to that.which basically cancels everything modern out..

1973 was just an arbitrary year, based upon your musical cut-off; my real point was that computers and the basis of what we call the internet existed then and before... http://www.w3.org/History.html

A wise man ;)

I'm much the same, in my opinion there seems to be only one real advantage of modern equipment and that is covienience, you can keep all your recordings in as new condition on a hard disk, make exact copies for your car stereo etc. that's it, in my opinion hifi is no better now than it was back in the 70's, the blurb and hifi press will try to convince you otherwise baffling you with facts and figures, but the truth is that most so called improvements to sound quality from one years model to the next are probably inaudiable, but the industry needs you to want more, want better, it's what keeps it going.

music and the reproduction of it is very subjective, what sounds good to me may not float another mans boat as it were. At the end of the day if you like the sound coming from your speakers, sit back smile and worry about something else.

Whoa! correct me if I’m wrong Andre but don’t you have an HRT 11 which as I understand it you are extremely pleased with?
Hardly vintage kit is it mate ;)
I think you’re trying to start a scrap

I have mixed both in the past, with a Sugden A21 and also Quad 57's. Worked great IMHO, a real synergy with these used with a Rotel pre and Arcam cd player.

70s speakers, 80s record deck, 90s CD transport, 00s DAC just about sums it up this way :eyebrows:

Andre there's a big prog revival going on, don't paint yourself into a corner based on numbers & dates...by all means play it on older kit, but there is some interesting new stuff going on music wise...:)

And they do mix the old with the new...IMHO quite successfully :)

Over my dead body ;) there is no prog anymore

All depends on the definition of prog ;)

People doing what they want outside of the constraints of a three minute single does it for me.

Oh there's a few bits out there...

god speed you black emperor
the silver mount zion memorial orchestra
souvaris
do make say think
explosions in the sky
cinematic orchestra
sigur ros
boards of canada

...that'll do for now as a starter :)

prog to me was the late 60's/early 70's the dress code, hair, the intrument before advancements few years down the line, recording techniques, the musicians putting down on tape what they wanted before they were dictated to by record companies, the live venues where a hand full of up & coming bands all played short sets the same night..etc etc..I'm sorry but the quality, the originallity & the original style of this music has long gawn.

Shane will know what i'm on about from the Vandyke early days

Yep, compared with the new post-rock folks, those old dudes knew how to rock:

By it's very definition 'Prog' can not be classified as a style, it is the inverse, it is music without the restrictions imposed by a style.

'dress code'!!! How un-prog is that, you might as well be describing new romantics

I agree with the rest...

I'm off to this in a few weeks, new, experimental, underground...but no loons and afgans, and no one throwing knives at their hammond!!! Other than that it's still prog to me...even if they do use laptops ;)

New doesn't mean necessarily mean bad, otherwise we'd all still be listening to Gregorian chant ;)
