Na, it's light years away :lol: Never mind the cable, feel the technology. When exisiting protocols have hit the speed buffers, it's only logical to look at bringing fibre optic communications to consumer electronic devices.

But even the mighty Intel are not jumping straight to fibre-optics, their first generation of "Light Peak" is going to run over copper cable at a theoretical max of 10Gbps. So it will still be electrons and not photons.

As to media devices, I've no idea if or when that might come, we've yet to get widespread use of stuff like "USB audio class 2.0". Do you think peps will jump to a new bandwagon? My guess is USB audio, and Spdif will be around for quite a bit longer. But if their is any advantage in the audio field, I suppose someone somewhere will give us a "Light pipe", you can just imagine the strap line: "Now, Sound travels at the speed of light ... " Do you think the phrase "For the first time in a generation ..." fits in there too?
