View Full Version : Interest check/swap: Tannoy Monitor Gold 15in in GRF Cabs

The GRFs seem to have lost something .. not sure what .. in my new house, so thinking of going back to my first love which is Quad ESLs. I'm not entirely wedded to selling at the moment, a swop is mainly what I'm looking for.

These GRFs are in birch ply, mahogany stained (though that can be easily changed to any finish you like). The Monitor Gold 15in dual concentric drive units were re-coned and serviced with original Tannoy materials at Lockwood in the summer at a cost of over £600 and are in tip-top condition. They have been fitted with modern crossovers using boutique parts (about £300+ worth of bits alone, all Clarity caps and fancy resistors) and the original crossovers and controls are present and can be refitted if required (they are in perfect working order though I prefer the modern xovers soundwise).

In return I'm looking for a fully serviced pair of 989s, or 63s with full Gradient kit. I might also consider other alternatives such as Apogees, stacked 57s, Avantgardes or some other interesting horn or dipole arrangement. Try me. (Ideally values should be comparable for swop I would say around the £2k mark).

And hurry I might just change my mind if I find a bit of swopping around makes things sound more like they did in the old place!

Pics on this old thread last time I pondered selling, over on the wigwam.

Hi Tom,

Most interesting.... I'm sure someone will be able to accommodate your request :)

Just a small point - the pics on the old Wigwam thread are only viewable if you're a member of WW, and logged in, (count me out), so you may wish to post them here via Photobucket or Imageshack to ensure that the widest audience can see the pics.

Good luck!

Marco.

P.S If in the end a swap doesn't work out, and you decide to sell, I would imagine Tony L on pfm would be very interested.

Apologies Marco I didn't realise (must be something with the new software over there).

The Harbeths look cool but I suspect I'd need a big sub (or pair of big subs) given my penchant for organ music (I was on organ scholar once, many years ago).

Nice one, Tom - I think you'll get more interest that way :)

They look great, although smaller than my Lockwood Majors (perhaps it's just the photo?) The Lockwoods are (H) 44", (W) 28", (D) 18".

Do you know how many litres your GRF cabs are (internal volume)?

Regarding Tony, yup, as good as his Harbs are, there's no way they'd give you anything like the scale you're used to with the Tannoys, hence why I said if you decide to sell, rather than swap

I'll have a word here with Barry, and see if he'll swap his Quad 57s for your GRFs - it's about time he had some proper speakers! :eyebrows:

Only kidding, Barry! ;)

I spent a very enjoyable couple of hours listening to these recently and they are absolutely stunning. :)

Good job I'm in a good mood this morning Marco, otherwise I might think you were 'getting at me'! :eyebrows:

They do look nice Tom - what are the tweeters?

Have decided to keep the Tannoys (room reorganisation sorted out my probs) and will be getting some ESLs in the near future, I've decided I need both in my life!

Tweeters are Audiosmiles, now sold alas (due to being skint).

Good on you, I have run both, its difficult to give my allegence to either as they do both have different ways of delivering the same result
