I was so impressed by the TB W4-657D 4" full range driver in a double bass reflex enclosure that I've put together a complete kit, the DBR-100

The kit contains all the parts required to make a pair including 14 CNC machined 18mm MDF panels with slots and rebates for easy and accurate assembly.

Specifications:

Dimensions (mm): 608H x 235W x 255D.

Weight (each): 8.5 Kilo.

Cabinet material: 18mm MDF.

Volume: Upper chamber 7.5L, Lower chamber 16.7L.

Impedance: 8 ohms. Sensitivity: 87dB.

Driver: Tang Band W4-657D with aluminium cone and phase plug

Recommended amplification: 20 - 60W per channel (RMS 8 ohms)

Started off as a sole trader trading as 'Omicron Electronics', sometimes known as 'Oh my god electronics'! :lol: That was 1968.
When the business expanded I formed a limited company and changed the name to 'Micron Audio Ltd'. You'll find more on my site.

Thanks for your good wishes :) Finding someone to machine the cabinets at a reasonable price for a small run gave me quite a headache I can tell you!

I'm in the same boat with 'she who knows best' regarding a house full of speakers but she's quite tolerant and supportive of the DBR-100. She actually prefers them sound-wise to some of my more elaborate efforts. WAF is high ;)

+1 for Ashgate Audio - sounds much more businesslike.

I'm now offering my kit with a driverless option so that the buyer can use drivers of their own choosing.
Price: £175 + £13.75 delivery.

Also I've adjusted the price of the full kit: £249 + £16.95 delivery.

Unfortunately the MDF is too heavy to export as the shipping charges are horrendous :(

If anyone is interested in the CNC machined cabinets without the drivers and hardware I can do them for £140 per pair plus £9 delivery.

Very nice website, Steve, what a good read! I liked your IPL speaker article, I still have a set of S5TLs with the cabinets made and veneeered by my father and the rest built by me. They did and still do sound very good.

What a throwback those show photos are with stacks of speakers everywhere :)

Hi Hamish, sorry for late reply, e-mail notification doesn't appear to be working :(

At some point I might offer a small bookshelf kit but don't hold your breath! I really need to sell some DBR-100's first.

The only complete small speaker kit I've seen is the LS3/5A from Falcon Acoustics.

You can buy the cabinet kit on its own and modify the baffle for a single full range driver. A 4" TB or similar will probably fit in the existing hole for a B110 and the tweeter hole blocked off.

Well I've finally mastered ARTA, well sort of anyway, and by popular request I've done some FR plots of the DBR-100.

Due to testing limitations, response below 200Hz is not an actual representation. The scaling is 5dB per division and shows that the speaker is reasonably flat from 200 - 20000Hz, possibly within 3dB. Below 200Hz I can only go by what my ears tell me. Bass is not lacking.
