Try your local monumental mason - you might persuade him to take on a one-off job.

You can cut your own holes, you know!

Stone drill bits, tank cutters and a jig saw along with copious amounts of water is all you need.

Nothing special involved.

I would explore Panzerholz especially with an idler!!

The one Russ built perhaps

You could check whether the seller has any 401 plinths. The ads show plinths for 301s

I suspect this is the ex-owner of Slatedeck selling off remaining stock.

Thanks but I didn't expect to have to pay £350 for a piece of slate, maybe its me! Looking on the Loricraft website and f...me they sell a PSU for the 401 £2k, what's going on?

Clive

Slatedeck were always expensive vs getting it done yourself. The same is true with many things. I know a few people who had stonemasons cut slate for them. Mostly it comes out at around £200 for a plinth. A simple 40mm shelf cost me IIRC £50.

Don't forget this stuff comes out of the ground.
Its the labour that you are paying for, plus the tools used.

It's interesting to note that when slate comes from the suppliers it's around 40mm thick. To get 30mm or 20mm someone has to machine it down from 40mm. Yet you pay more for 40mm than 20mm......unless you go direct to the people who do the initial machining.

Also note that grades of slate vary hugely and it's quite easy to break some types. People who cut with water jets seem to have the lowest failure rates.

Take it from me David that this will be no way as simple as a PSU for a Techie 1210 ;) For starters it has to generate a really low distortion 230V (or 240V whatever) AC waveform at precisely 50Hz. So you have to have a PSU, quartz oscillator, a 50Hz low distortion AC generator, an amplifier & a transformer to step up the amplifier voltage & possibly some feedback around the lot to reduce distortion as much as possible.

There are other ways of doing it but at the end of the day it still gives the same thing. Of course you could just buy a PS Audio P300 & be done with it :eyebrows:

Bit like the cost of cables.....£350 is (IMHO) value for money when compared to £300-£1,000 for a 75cm interconnect or mains cable. (This not a personal attack...just an observation of the market.)

Trust me, making some of this stuff yourself, even if you value your time at £10/hour, and have all the tools, turns out to be a lot more expensive than buying!!

We've probably got far to used to cheap Chinese imports which are backed by an under-valued currency.

My recent 2 part plinth cost less than £200 including the arm board, the main cost of this was setting up the software from my template, this is now saved, so future plinth projects should cost me less.

I would be happy to get costs for other AOS members if interested.

I will try to post pics soon.

Can I have one please? I have a nice present waiting for you below for your time, its the least I could do as I spent all today costing the plinth up and its more than £200, a 2 level one was £595:-

If you just want to get started Mike Greenwood, mjea44 on Ebay, does these functional plinths (no sniggering at the back, I'm saving up for something substantial and gorgeous).

MDF and about £80 plus post as I recall.

The design has a lot going for it. Logic points towards a plinth with significant mass and density, but "unboxing" the motor this way is pretty effective at reducing resonance and rumble. The colour scheme is a matter of personal taste... :eyebrows:

I nearly bought that a few times for my 401... If it had been SME fit I would have (the colour would even have matched my room!) Good budget option I reckon.

Cheers David, I will probably wait and go for a Russ Collinson (http://www.layers-of-beauty.co.uk/page8.php) multi-layer ply plinth, but to be honest, way down the list at the moment. :(

I contacted Russ myself as he done one for me last year, opinions vary as to if slate or wood is best.

Hi David,

A two tier plinth with cut out arm board like the one in the pics that I sent you would cost £280 inc vat, that is in 20mm slate, add £60.00 for 30mm slate, single tier would be cheaper.

I can cnc the tempates myself, which saves cost, so the arm board could be made to suit any arm, I would just need arm details etc.

If I can generate enough interest on the forum I may be able to get a better deal.

Thats really good deal for a two tier I recommend to pay the extra 60 and go for the 30mm slate

I may well be interested in a 2 tier one for my 301.
Do you have a photo?
Is it £60 extra per tier for the 30mm?

Many thanks

Hi Gerry,

Just picked up your post, I will ring them tomorrow and get a firm price, I may need 301 template sizes, only have the 401 details at the moment.

Are you the chap that purchased my AC3300 arm a while back?

Problem with these plinths is the 401 platter is quite high so the armboard has to be taller than normal to get the arm straight with the platter.
