Interest Check - Quad 306 Amplifier Unmodified

Bit of a clearout as I might be jumping on to the Naim wagon.

Wanted to check interest for an immaculate condition Quad 306 boxed. Other than very minor paint chips the unit is mint.

Unmodified except for Speaker Binding Posts (Quad originals were weak and prone to breaking)

No hums - totally silent

Good amp that and a bargain to boot. Are you sure you want to downgrade to a Naim? the 135's and their modern equivalents are the only ones I'd regard as comparable, the others nowhere near as good at amplifying a musical signal *without adding anything of their own* to the mix... ;) I mean, the 606 in good order can quite easily deliver 200W into 4 Ohms I understand, as it's one Quad that CAN drive a 4 Ohm load without limiting itself into oblivion...

Me? I'd get the 606 recapped and dada'd if I were you and then invest in a decent preamp for it (depending on what you have already of course) :)

It's a 306 that Koowat has on offer. A decent 606 at £200 really would be a bargain. That's not to say a Quad 306 isn't worth having. I've got one myself.

It's a lovely amp, no hum, no hiss (beats my 405-2 at idle) but it's got to go says the missus...

I now pair the Croft Micro 25 Basic with the 405-2, and use the N50sa with the 306 at times.....

I'll take a reasonable offer but the going rate seems to tick up on fleabay but those arent in this condition or have Quad packaging

You're quite right everyone and I'm a thick, blind TW@T for not noticing - sincere apologies..

OK then, I'm going on a different tack here.. The 405 has high input sensitivity due to the period of its design (to go with the 33?) but this can be dealt with on the board, giving better s/n ratio in the process. The 405's should not have a mains earth connected as the case is earthed via the signal leads. This should remove the hum, as it has with the ton-up 303 I own.

Dada and Net Audio do some great updates on the 405-2 amps and it should be possible to update the power supply at least without spending a fortune. Have a look at the Quad blog-spot for hints and tips here. It's a mighty fine amp still with a little updating (rather than wholesale upgrades if it's a mk2).

As to a replacement power amp. Knowing the Quads as well as I do, may I NOW suggest a 606, preferably a mk2 with slightly chamfered top and bottom, as it stabilises quicker and the transformer is more reliable (if a 606 fails at all, the transformer can be suspect and the originals aren't available I understand).

Another good Naim-basher power amp is the Croft Series 7 (you have a pre already) and this will be a treat for sore ears I promise you. All the things you hopefully love about the Micro Basic are there in the deceptively simple Series 7 (I think that a simple valve driver stage feeding ss output transistors is an excellent solution for a simple signal path - hard wired too...

Well i've opened up the 405-2 acquired not too long ago. It's got dual mono power supply, BHC caps, OPA604's, input sensitivity down to 1.5V. As for earthing - this is the later model with the phonos so I'm not really sure what to do. The signal leads (DINs) used to ground it but with phonos I read something but couldnt get to the bottom of what I was uspposed to do. Anyways any insight on whether to inverse the phase if I am not using the 34 (+'s to -'s and viceversa)?

The 306 is absolutely silent - simple to operate....if it wasnt missus and space I'd keep it. Just thought Id like to hook up a Nait in the bedroom or something.

Nait 2 if the speakers are VERY efficient, otherwise you'll be soft-clipping all the time.

By the way, the Dada website has updates for the 306 too.

Hmm I've been looking at this thread again and again and I keep coming back and thinking for gods sake someone buy it!!!!

Ideally I have been waiting for a nice condition well looked after Quad 606 to come up but am still waiting.

I could be persuaded to give it's little brother 306 a try as by the photos above this one looks really nice with nice speaker post mods etc. Could be a good intro to Quad as it would be my first Quad amp.

I'd be looking at £150 inc postage on the price though. Can purchase immediately via paypal/bank transfer if you are interested.
