I newer thought that I would say this but bloody h**l, CD can really sound great :eek:.

I received my latest purchase two days ago and have been really impressed how three dimensional, warm and involving sound 20 year old Teac VRDS 10 SE squeezes from the humble CD format. Until now I have thought that CD is inferior compared to vinyl. I think vinyl is still on the top with some margin, but I have to admit that I am positively and absolutely impressed now. It seems I have been actively ignored this music format and used CD as an background noise and not really given it appreciation it clearly deserves. Partly this has been because I have been building my vinyl system from scratch, partly because I have not heard good CDP's before my friend's heavily modified Teac VRDS 25x and now my 10 SE. I am sure there are many wonderfull and much better and more expensive CDP's around, but I think this one I have is a keeper.

I have been trying to surf on the Internet, but constantly find myself just listening my old CD's and admiring how much detail Teac is extracting from CD's. Each time it is like listening music through new format, if that makes any sense. Hard to explain, but if nothing else has been achieved, it is really nice to use the remote control from the sofa :lol:

And don't forget, the sound also comes without the sometimes annoying snap crackle & pop that goes hand in hand with vinyl :eek:

Awesome Player! I did some mods on a VRDS 10 for a friend. Clock and caps on the decoder board & PSU caps on the dac board with loads of local decoupling caps on the many feeds to the dual TDA1547's! I also replacde the output stage wth LME47920HA opamps (which is tricky as the originals are SIL (8 pins in line) which is unusual for dual opamps) decoupled with elana cerafine.

I have pics but they on my they are on my main PC which is packed for moving.

I'll dig some out in a week or so.......

My thoughts on this player......... std better than any std TDA1541a player I've heard except the meridian 207 with its fully discrete output stage.

£100 worth of part fitted.........stunning!!:stalks:

only downside is the plastic mech parts which inevitably cause problems

Congrats on your purchase...those older Teacs are some fine sounding machines, very smooth and musical.

Your friends modded 25x, that's a fine machine...I have heard two 25's both modded by different people, both sounded very good.

I prefer listening to my vinyl, but I don't place my CD player far behind in ability...but there is something special about placing that LP on the table and cleaning it....I guess it likes taking your time with a woman, it's just always worth it ;)

This comment brought a big nostalgic smile on to my face :lol:. It reminds me of the time when I started my search of vinyl nirvana with Linn Axis+Basic Plus+K9, combined with very clean and crisp Arcam A22 with internal phono stage. I can remember vividly the snap crackle and pop sound effects.

But now after I have gone trough many deck/tonearm/cartridge/phono stage combinations, I have to say that as long as you have clean and dust free records, stylus in good condition and properly adjusted deck, these sound effects will disappear and you can hear what all the fuss is about, trust me :trust:

Hello Jerry, Chris and Hamish. I assume you guys are streaming music from web to your stereo kit. I have read good things about this way of enjoying music and was very close of buying one, but decided to wait a bit more before all the tiny problems have been sorted out from this fairly new format.

I think I am a old man trapped in a young mans body :rolleyes:. I have to have the music physically in my hands to enjoy from it. It just slightly puts me off that you do not have the vinyl cover or CD box in my hand when I start listening session. It is like when there was an scientifically validated study made of how drinking tea relaxes you more that drinking coffee. Both should really make you a bit more alert, but this study showed that tea drinkers were more calm and relaxed compared to coffee drinkers after they made a cup pa. I have reasoned this difference to be explained how tea and coffee are made; one have to wait tea to boil, have to prepare the tea pot with tea leafs/bags etc. With coffee it is just simple task of filling the water reservoir and adding some coffee. I think it is the preparation what makes drinking tea more relaxing experience.

I also think that it is the same with vinyl, why it is so much more enjoyable experience compared to listening streamed music. You have to think first what music you feel like listening, then you have to find the vinyl. Before this you have turned the Garrard and your valve gear to warm up :eyebrows:. Then you take the vinyl of its sleeve, look the sleeve graphics and place the vinyl on the platter.Then you need to use special brush to wipe out any dust from the vinyl surface. Using another special brush you clean the stylus and lover the tonearm to the record groove and start enjoying the music...

As I wrote earlier I have been using CDs in the past as an background noise/music, but after I got my new CDP I can appreciate what it can do and enjoy this format. I think I am just prejudices against everything new before someone proves me wrong.

Welcome to the world of CD players with good mechanisms.

Give the VRDS-10 a decent clock, regulators, and improve the bypass, decoupling capacitors and it will really show you what it can do.

I am not very tehnically minded but I have been thinking of Trichord Clock 4 upgrade with their "Never Connected" PSU. Do you think this would be a good starting point to get the best from my CDP?

Hi, I used to run a Trichord 4 but now I run a Fidelity Audio C2 as I can re-clock multiple places at the same time. The on I did for a friend, I clocked the servo then ran another feed across to the DAC board (which I think was /2 the clock speed).

Any PSU work you do will pay dividends. I have the service manual with details of the upgrades when I can get to my main HDD. I'll post more when I unpack the PC next weekend! :)
