I wouldn't really think there's much difference between any of them. They are (most likely) all going to be a generic mech with a badge on the front. Pay your money and take your chioce.

In what way Andre. As long as it can read/write data reliably I would have thought that was all that would be required.

Well the Pioneer was better quality tray than the cheap one & sounded a lot clearer to me when playing a CD! hence their is obvious quality all around difference.

Fair enough, I didnt realise that you use it to play CD's 'live' so to speak. If thats what you have found then I retract my previous postings as this isnt something I have ever tried or investigated.

Hi there
It was just a test to see if the two were any different, i don't play CD's through computer but i see a few CD Rom based projects on some forums that people rave about!Just wanna make sure i'm getting the best possible read/write

Andr'e, don't you think you have possibly answered your own question? If you prefered a Pioneer previously (& yes they are great drives - i have a DVD rewriter) then why not go for similar again :)

I know i would :eyebrows:

If i could think of any decent alternatives i would name them, but Pioneer appears to be about it

The Samsung ones are cheap and reliable. I use one (can't remember the model number) and all the rips I do using dbPoweramp verify to AccurateRip.

I use a Pioneer drive. They are also mechanically quieter than most.
It appears to be the drive of choice on the HTPC forums

I agree with Andre.Pioneer drives are the best, both in specifications and reliability especially reliability.I have 2 on my 5 year old computer and never had a problem.
