I will be recieving a jelco arm in the next few days(hopefully) and need some advice on where to get an arm board for the 1200 and some tonearm cable recommendations.

I have never fitted an arm before so any advice in what to do or not do would be appreciated,as im not sure how easy it will be.

cheers.

I think Marco is very happy with his Oyaide tone-arm cable indeed.

I've been looking on and off for a while myself david, they don't seem to come up to often second hand,i got a good deal on mine.

Hi Darren,

Welcome to the Jelco club! :)

I'd get an armboard from Mr Cawley, as short of a Mike New solid brass one, the German-made ones DC sells are superb - it's what I use.

As for tonearm cable - that depends on your budget. Yes, like David says, I'm very happy indeed with the Oyaide, but it's not cheap - although it's a bargain compared with the Furutech...!

The Neglex cable is pretty good and a lot less expensive than the Oyaide.

Marco
17-01-2011, 22:57
Agreed, but the Oyaide is a whole different ball game, Martin! ;)

I should really do a write-up on it.

It depends on how much Darren wants to spend.

cheers marco, when i saw it advertised on here i couldn't believe no-one had snapped it up at the price it was going for, so thought it be rude not to :).

Well depending on how much the armboard is,i like to keep the cost to about £50 for the tonearm cable.

Marco
17-01-2011, 23:03
In that case, the Neglex is the one, although it'll be about £60 or so. You just missed the one I sold recently.... :)

Or you could try one of Johnny's tonearm cables for £55.00: http://www.audioorigami.co.uk/AO_Rewires/DSCF1474.jpg

Or a posher one (same cable) but with a Cardas gold connector and plugs for £110. He may even be able to supply an armboard, too ;)

cheers marco,i'll give johnny a ring see what he can do.

Just been on dave's site £90 for a board .The jelco i bought is coming with a extra heavy c/w.I'll be using a nagaoka mp 110,so it looks like im selling the c/w if there that expensive,I thought they would be about £50.

Hi Darren,

As far as tonearm cables go at that price, personally, I reckon Johnny's would be as good as any, and you're giving yer dosh to one of the industry's nice guys :)

As for armboards, if you can afford it, I'd buy one of DC's (unless J7 can do you a deal on something). Trust me, they are *very* good and engineered to a superb standard - I wouldn't say so otherwise ;)

Understood, Marco, but I was addressing the latter point.

Oh, and I agree that DC's arm boards are superb, I cannot fault my custom Dynavector board.

Marco

Yup, DC's arm boards are machined beautifully and very rigid (making for excellent mechanical integrity), although £90 is rather OTT. His prices appear to have gone up quite a bit since I bought mine.....

I'll second what Marco says about J7's Audio Origami arm cable - I have one as well as the Neglex, and J7's cable is way better sounding in every respect. That's with either Jelco SA-750D or the Ittok LVII, both of which share the same connector. The Neglex is a good cable, but pushing the budget by only £30 is worth it. That said, if the budget is limited, I could be open to offers on my Neglex cable ;)

I need to sell a few items that have now become redundent, like my kab jack plate, mark grant i/c and jelco heavy c/w after i have done that i'll be in a better position as to which direction to go regarding a tonearm cable. So will keep you in mind hugo.

To be honest i don't feel comfortable spending more than £100 on any cables and even then they have to be the dog's danglies.Im sure the oyaide is a fantastic cable though.

Maybe at my next poker win i can go for it then as it will be money won and not earnt.

Excuse me popping in here but arm cables are under discussion. I recently bought a 1.5M Van Damme arm cable from J7/AO with SME/Neutrix pro phonos for £110.00 + £4.00 PP, this is being used at the mo. I noticed at the SME fit end there was not an earth wire intended for earthing to the turntable metal chassis, a la Linn. J7 informed me that he no longer puts an earth cable at this end as some of his customers did not know what to do with it? I noticed that the Oyaide cable does not have an earth wire at the SME to arm connection, is this a 'today' thing? Why do some cables have this an others don't  As far as I can tell it has made no difference to the performance of my 1210 but its early days, the stock arm was earthed onto the pitch control screw. For peace of mind with my LP12 I would prefer an earth wire connected to the metal sub chassis!

Can someone enlighten me as to the merits or demerits of an earth wire to turntable chassis (metal part)?

Thx for advice

Ron :)

I got a new tonearm cable with two earths recently and attached one to the pitch control and one to the preamp. Ive had problems ever since that may or may not be related but Stan thought it maybe a floating earth so be careful.
I understand your concern though as the mains lead is two core and the Technics is metal bodied.

MartinT

I have always used am arm cable with earth lead and that lead goes to my phono preamp's earth post. No problems with hum whatsoever.

JazzBones
19-01-2011, 18:23
Thanks Colin and Martin for the benefit of your experience. The non existence of the arm earth lead from SME bayonet fit to base of tone arm is what worries me. The earth lead that is connected (earthed to control/pre amp) is there and the required connection has been made :) Technic's stock arm is earthed at both ends viz: at TT metal body end and again to earth post at pre amp. What I'm trying to get my brain spaghetti around  is WHY on earth (pun :eyebrows:) is it practice NOT to have the connection of lead to tonearm itself not earthed... flaming hell, I'm getting paronoid ?

As an aside, it is my belief (open to correction) that it is always wiser to upgrade to a better performing tone arm itself prior to upgrading the tone arm cable/lead, yes?

Thought for the day: there must be an elephant type of grave yard that old tonearm cables go to when there life has ended, maybe from this place one could give life again to an unwanted cable.. just me meandering again folks:scratch:

right i have now recieved the armboard which i have now fitted along with the tonearm base. This is as far as i can go as i have never fitted an arm before,so how do i align the arm in the base?

Hi Darren
How do you mean align the arm? If the base plate is from the greek guy and you have fitted the arm collar then you just need to fit the arm into the base and it will have the correct pivot to spindle distance.
Do you mean the final bits of set up like the cartridge overhang, VTA, etc?

chris@panteg

Hi Darren

You can download an alignment protractor from Vinyl engine , is that what you need ?

When i place the tonearm in the collar it is able to spin left and right in a groove where the arm rest is.

Does it matter where i fix the arm in relation to this groove or put another way does the counterweight need to be parallel to the back of the deck?

Is the correct pivot to spindle distance kept if i fix the tone arm anywhere within that groove and as long as the needle reaches the end of the record?

Hi Darren , i know what you mean now. I had the same dillema. I just turned the arm until it was parallel with the edge of the deck and tightened everything up.
I have a protractor for the jelco 250st but your arm length is deifferent i think so you may be better of going to vinyl engine and downloading the one for your model. Good luck.

Yup, I think the Jelco is a superb cosmetic match for the SL-1210, which is one of the reasons why I use it. It also makes a dream combo, sonically, with a DL-103 or SPU :)

However, I'm confident that one of these babies, the 9" version, (which I intend to fit to my T/T before the end of the year) will be even better:

Just ordered a cable from J7 at audio origami so will have tunes soon :).

Marco,i vaguely remember somewhere in your many posts that you were going to review a Funk FXR tonearm.Did this ever happen? and if so how did it compare to the jelco?

I did inquire about the funk arm but no-one got back to me so would be interested in your thoughts on it,if you have used it of course.

Marco
01-02-2011, 18:06
Hi Darren,

Arthur did send me an FX-R to try on my Techie, but unfortunately it was just before Christmas when I was loaded with the flu, and so I didn't get a chance to try it. I have since sent it back.

However, I have heard the FX-R on other T/Ts, and it is a superb sounding tonearm, in my opinion, sonically, as good as anything SME make, although obviously not as meticulously well engineered.

TBH, if I wasn't into the high-mass approach with arms and cartridges, I'd have fitted an FX-R to my Techie in a shot! :)

The 12" arm as shown, the RS309D costs $2475 (~£1532), whereas the cheaper version, the 12" AS309S, costs almost the same at £1495.

The 9" version you have in mind, the AS212S costs £1025. I'm not sure how much the RS212D would cost but I would imagine it is a better built arm than the AS212S.

Or is it just badge snobbery on your part...:)

Yes, I've tried SME arms on a Techie, and also listened to them on other people's T/Ts, and have owned a few myself in the past. I know exactly what they're capable of.

After researching this tone-arm/TT/cartridge business for some months now and reading forums for a while I somehow think the Jelco looks nice on the Techie but the turntable deserves something better for sure?

Marco
01-02-2011, 19:34
Yes and no... Yes, if you're not into 103s or SPUs, but more than acceptable (in fact bloody wonderful) if you are and don't like modern cartridges much.

The only reason I'm thinking of going for the Ortofon tonearm is because I love its design principles (and looks) - it'll basically do what the Jelco does, only better.....! :)

Hi Martin,

More than likely, although to a much higher spec than the SA-750 (or the 250ST you used to have) :)

Marco.

Marco, so far, the difference is evident in two specs only, headshell and MSRP. Is there any specificiation comparrison between the two in technical terms or it is merely "if you ask how much it is not for you".

But back to the tonearm cable discussion. I have Nagaoka cable that exist in
two different versions. SAEC also used to do this - same cable, different capacitance for different cartridge loading. it was twenty years ago, when the cable specs meant something to the people who matched cartridge, internal tonearm wiring, tonearm cabling and Preamp input sensitivity for proper loading.

At that time, matching of the tonearm and cartridge was a kind of a black art because compliance formulas were not widely known.

I find it ironic that today we can match tonearm, headshell and cartridge to perfection in the first shot, yet, when it comes to tonearm cabling, we have to resort to trial and errror. Capacitance matching numbers are seldomly if ever reported and this has become the lost art.

My understanding is that resistance and capacitance has to be added from the tip of the cartidge to the input of the phono preamp. The more steps
in between, the more complex calculation.

I have 750D with original headshell and have been told that the headshell leads and internal wiring is top notch and there is no need to rewire.

However, when it comes to tonearm cable, it becomes more complicated.

For example, JELCO $100 Neglex is either good for D103 or for D103R, can not be good for both, because their output impedance is different.
Ditto for NOS Nagaoka, Oyaide, Furutech, or Younameit

Let's say, two simplest scenarios.

Scenario 1: Denon 103 directly into MC phono input.

Scenario 2: Denon 103R directly into MC phono input

How to choose the right cable in each case?

a) buy cartridge first, then find cable that can be best electrical match
(engineering approach)

b) buy cartrigde and then swap cables until you find something you like
(trial and error approach)

c) buy the most expensive cable you can afford and then find the right cartridge for that cable, using engineering or trial and error approach.

here is the discussion on Steve Hoffman's forum:

http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/archive/index.php/t-214633.html

Briefly, by changing the lenght of the cable and type of the phono wiring we can change tonal balance of the cartridge and affect the overal tonal balance of the system.

It just occured to me that many turntable users go through the endless search for two reasons: no VTA adjustment for the thickness of the record they are playing and interconnect that changes the tonal signature of their vinyl reproduction chain.

Any comments?

What you really need is the tonearm shown in the second picture in this CES blog (which does not necessarily cost as much as $2000!):

Hi Hugo,

Lol - lovely, but not much use with a traditional SPU ;)

After researching this tone-arm/TT/cartridge business for some months now and reading forums for a while I somehow think the Jelco looks nice on the Techie but the turntable deserves something better for sure?

I think I may have maxed out in that area ;)

Simples! Just get one of the SPUs that fits!

Had a conversation with johnnie at AO,what a really nice guy,it was a pleasure talking to him.

Ran into a slight issue though, the cable i ordered was with phono connections and to get the cardas detachable cable is an extra £60 which i don't have atm.

I have a basic cable if you need it but Chris`s suggestion is a very good one.
You wont need another cable when you have a J7 cable :)

Does the offer still stand colin? Just to tie me over till i can afford something else.

Marco.

I think in the distant future this may be my next arm as it's a visual match for my 1200,and probaly doesn't sound to shabby either.

Indeed - but unfortunately I don't like the look of those... Part of the attraction of the SPU for me is that gorgeous retro headshell! :)

Are you listening with your eyes Marco? :eyebrows:

Just kidding fella, aesthetics do come into effect as long as the sound is the most important ;) Get both right &......

Lol - don't tell me that part of the attraction of your system isn't how it looks (you like bad-ass brutal)!! :eyebrows:

Remember that Krell thing you referred to as a "thing of beauty"? ;)

Sound quality always comes first and foremost, but fortunately both SPUs sound quite similar, however the traditional SPU just looks so much sexier:

At some point, I'd like to add an original vintage SPU to my cartridge collection:

How could i ever forget :)

Yep, form & function! Get them both right & you are going to be one happy chappie ;)

Different strokes for different folks though at the end of the day. Martins Dynavector 507 just does it for me visually & i'm sure it sounds superb to go along with it...

Again a different form that i tend to like the look of because it makes some sense (& the engineering behind it), that doesn't appeal to everyone..

You have gotten me thinking :)

Yes, I also love Martin's Dynavector - now that *is* a thing of beauty :)

Marco.

But Marco, that's the point of FXR. It starts out life as a low mass arm, thereby complementing high compliance cartridges but then for low compliance cartridges that like high mass arms, you mass load the headshell to the desired level with slugs which we can supply. You now have your high-mass arm.

I am designing not for our eyes but for the physics demanded by the invisible forces generated by stylii. Perversely, looking at the response curves, I am designing exactly for our eyes, which at last happen to complement our ears.

Doing things this way is very important and delivers a unique sonic benefit. It keeps the arm's signature effect to a minimum.
So-called high-mass arms simply can't do that and why FXR's phenomenal resonance plot is achieved without obvious damping - damping would otherwise smear the final performance. It all adds up to "...a superb sounding arm," (your words) "although obviously not as meticulously well engineered"

Be that as it may, neither it is so highly priced! Plus what other upgrade path exists to create such a musical performance from a £100 - £200 donor arm? You must understand the raison d'etre of FXR, which has been developed for our current economic times. As more people get FXR, it is now becoming accepted more and more that you get the (lack of) sound. The big "but" is that your wallet doesn't get the hit.

When I decide to release a "meticulously engineered" product (c.f. even Anniversary of 20 years ago) you'll know about it. But then neither will it be £1200.

Just a quick note about tonearm boards for Technics SL12** / SL15** made by George Boublinis - the gent from Greece who advertises on ebay.
I got him to make me a new board so I can use one of the arm collars from Hugo with a Jelco 370H.
Had a very nice and informative e-mail exchange and he's made me a board as a one off. It costs a bit more than the others he sells as its a one off but never-the-less still a good price and to be honest an excellent service so far.
Can't be faulted to be honest.
Just in case anyone else is looking for a new board for a Techie I'd recommend George wholeheartedly.

Marco.

Have you heard the Furutech on the Jelco? I could likely get one cheapish from a mate who cant use it on his LP12, and I am planning on getting Jelco 750L soon.

Else I could get a Zu cable instead.

The trouble with cables (any sort) is ideally we would all like 2 or 3 or more of any single type to have a play with, so as an example an oyaide, furutech and jelco tone arm cable that we can listen to at our leisure for a few weeks. problem is some dealers (obviously there are exceptions) only want to sell product and don't like sending stuff out with no money changing hands so it is difficult to trial cables without paying for them first and no one would spend £1500 on a Furutech cable without hearing it first or at least reading some reviews, personally being in the trade I take a different approach, people like the human touch, anyone can speak to me anytime day or night even on sundays, my telephone number is on my site and on my e-bay shop, and I am always happy to send cables for trial as long as I have them in stock, to me the proof of the pudding is in the listening, I have personally listened to a linn tone arm cable, a jelco one (for only 1 day with that one as I had to forward it onto someone) , am oyaide and a pure silver litz one and finally a cardas one.

I don't personally go for the improved soundstage, lower noise floor etc, etc that reviewers use to describe the sound, my philosophy is does it sound "right". Out of the arm leads I heard the Oyaide was the best, if anyone would like to trial the Oyaide cable send me a pm, I have a few in stock, there is a matching interconnect as well for phono stage to amp.

quick update,i have had the tonearm with jelco cable running a few weeks now and im very happy with the combo.

Music is now alot more defined and fluid with good levels of detail,no doubt help by the croft phono stage :eyebrows:.It's a very addictive combo, especially late at night.

I'm going to buy one of the Mogami Starquad cables. The maker has asked whether I'd like a second ground wire fitted for the pitch control. His comment was:

...in most occasions the Technics chassis needs to be earthed. The stock tonearm has a second ground lead that connects internally to the pitch plate for this purpose. This can also replicated with a detachable ground lead. Note that this ground lead is not as important as the main one, and it is not likely that you will get any evident noise if you don't use one.

I've attached a picture. The second ground would mean removing the base plate to swap cables at any stage. The DIN cables I see others using on Jelco modded 1200s doesn't have the second ground.

Can anyone comment on the value of using a second ground.

Thanks
