... and there is a famous "The Kinks" pub down the road with a Kinks memorabilia/party room - The Clissold Arms - where they first performed. The Indian opposite (Rasoi) is brilliant.

I popped into Les Aldrich today for a quick skim. (My wife had sent me to Muswell Hill to buy food (to continue the theme)).

Overall, the stock is much thinner than it was a few years ago and the bargain clearances seem to have gone :(, and few DVDAs for those who like that sort of thing. I did some sampling and the classical CDs seem all to represent respectable versions of the works but not a very wide selection of different artists/conductors/orchestras - modern shop economics, I suppose. Some bargains - the complete works of Mozart on CD for £95, for example.

The vinyl selection is small but high quality - some jazz but mainly audiophile pressings of current artists, all around the £20 mark. The latest Gregory Porter on Blue Note was in there - a steal at £24 for the double album.

Not really they played it really safe and bought lots of stuff thats more or less going to sell like 180g pressing of the beatles, stones, etc. They do have quite a selection of second hand stuff and whilst they had one or two prog records it was stuff that you could probably pick up in any record shop. I just bought some Jazz, classical, and AOR. I only spent 7 quid but came out with 6 records!! Unfortunately a lot of the new releases they had in I'd already purchased, BUT, they were selling a lot of new pressing for £16.99 which is £2-3 cheaper than the places I usually shop. :eyebrows:

Having an enjoyable browse through Ben's Records in Guildford. Big stock although patchy range. Very reasonable prices, he obviously isn't whacking them up like many charity shops. A good find.

There is a fairly new record shop in Bangor (Wales), called Mudshark Records. Its opposite the cathedral. Jeff is very pleasant to deal with and has a reasonable amount of stock given the fairly small size of the shop. The records are in very good nick and reasonably priced given the quality. Well worth a visit if you venture up there. I suspect Marco might find it within easy travelling distance (A55 straight there). I came out £90 poorer but 20 albums better off. I'd only have wasted it on food.

Actually, looking for locals, there is a lot of Sigur Ros on vinyl, some recorded at Abbey Road. Bjork is everywhere. Don't fancy driving a lot of vinyl 1500km around here, so will try some in the UK.

There is one which is 20 miles from me in Lincoln - "Back to Mono" but to be honest the shop is small and takes you forever to search through the stock :( I know it's not helping the smaller shops, but to be honest I'd rather get a bargain off t'bay :) :) Most shops, and this includes charity shops, all tend to want top dollar for their records!!! They all seem to go straight to the Record Collectors Guide and believe that the prices in there are "gospel"!!!! :( :(

I totally agree, I buy to play and yes I have some "rare" vinyl but I bought well and play it often!!!! I don't know how they arrive at their prices, and quick a few are well out. Dr Feelgood's 1st 2 Lp's (Down by the jetty and Malpractice) are listed at £18 mint!! You can't get a decent copy for less than £20-£30!!!

Don't know if anybody already mentioned Keswick Collectables - in St. John Street, Keswick ( Cumbria ) .
Looks like an antique and book shop from the front ; inside at the back, a small area with several good racks of LPs and singles mostly from 60's , 70's & 80's . On the wall typically numerous rarities in the £70-£500 range . Last time I was in there ( he tortures me every time I pop in there for a quick look round ) he had 'The Sound of Sunforest' by Sunforest (Deram) up there . Regularly seems to sniff out the best collections in the North of England . Have spent easily over £1000 in there in the last 7 or 8 years . Given the appreciation of vinyl, this has turned out to be a very wise investment .

He hasn't got a website and doesn't do e-mail .

Rant 1
I bought a first press Beatles Rubber soul (Loud) from there, had three to choose from, all in good nick and played well and all half the price of a naff 2nd press that was scratched and clicked at the Oxfam shop 500 yards down the road. I complained to Oxfam about their pricing, not just over this but quoted them examples from three of their shops in the cash strapped North. I got a very stock response of, "we use the record collectors guide". They may do but the grading is well off, so therefore is the price. Oxfam and anything to do with them is Black listed by me. Funny thing is there were loads of folks in the Keswick shop and the buzz was "why is everything so expensive" refering to the clothing.

Seems that you have to be rich to shop at certain charity shops these days, and for items that were gifted.

Rant 2
While I'm on the subject, of the record collectors guide, what a joke, how can you grade a copy of a sound recording without any reference to sound. Looks can be decieving, the worst sounding LP I ever bought was a copy of Bowies Hunky Dory, no don't say it, nothing to do with Mr Bowies abilities as a singer :eyebrows: it was the scratchyest worst sounding thing I had ever come accross, even after going through the RCM twice. It looked very good without any signs of damage and could easily pass for excelent+ according to the guide criteria.
I was ripped of on the Bay but what could I do, the seller quoted the quide grading and his visual assesment was correct.

I'm aware of all the problems surounding sound quality v equipment used if trying to grade sound, but there has to be a better way of doing it.


Sorry for the double rant, two of my pet hates these.

Qwin!! I quite agree with you about "sound quality" not visual!! However, sometimes it can work to your advantage - I took a gamble on a very early Fats Domino LP - graded as poor and got it for £3 quid........It looks like someone has used it as a dinner plate on both sides!!! To my surprise it plays great, no clicks, jumps or background noise apart from the odd bits on the run in's and between tracks!! A testament to old vinyl :) :)

Its early days and he is only just moving stock in to the premesis. He has been web based for about seven years, but may start selling from the shop if there is enough interest. I will keep checking and report back if he goes that route.

A few recommendations for vinyl spinners.

1. Cannock indoor market - 2 stores with large turnover and unbelievable prices and some superb mint vinyl. Great variety.

2. Shrewsbury Indoor market - good selection but some vinyl a bit pricey - usual suspects:)

3. Stourbridge - Room above the furniture shop in lower high street - bought a copy of Satchmo plays king Oliver - near mint £1 !!!

4. Weymouth - don't know name of the shop but great selection and well priced - quite a bit of 12 inch techno (you may be interested Marco:lol:)

For any of you visiting Dublin, Spin Dizzy in Dublin is worth a mention, it's not massive but I've had some great recommendations from Enda and Steve that work there.

A cd and record shop in brightons north laines called 'resident'. They expanded to double the size of the shop because so many people are buying vinyl again.

But they are a great shop and HMV in Churchill square has shut down, but HMV is a terrible music shop for finding eclectic music.

In resident you can always get recommended something decent and they have all the great and best music from all the genres. In some ways I know CDs are doomed but I really hope it doesn't ever come to not being able to walk into a shop like resident and buy music, even if it's a electronic card or download card with the artists name and album on it.

Renew in York, a bit like the That's Entertainment chain, didn't have long as our parking was running out but CDs at£2 each or 3 for £5, I bought 2 Gomez CDs, one a double album and the second album by fine young cannibals, all near mint:)

All of these have a good selection and knowledge of what you may be looking for.

If possible I will buy from independents such as these places rather than off ebay, mainly because I like to inspect the vinyl before buying.

I visited the charming old town of Nantwich on Saturday to visit some friends and to check out a new record shop I'd been told about, where I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Steven. The shop is tucked away around the back of the main shopping precinct, but still bang in the middle of town, with ample parking nearby (Love Lane is nearest). Quirky in style, originally part of an old farmhouse (and latterly a solicitor's office), the building oozes olde-worlde charm and character,

Initially, I couldn't find the shop, but a quick call, enquiring about its exact whereabouts, resulted in Steven popping out with his brolly (as it was a rather wet day) and meeting me where I'd told him I was, only seconds away, and accompanying me to the shop, whereupon I was offered a rather welcome soft drink (tea and coffee were also available), whilst I browsed the available titles.

For a small shop, it sells a wide selection of music, with classic rock/indie albums, jazz, blues and electronica (among others), which will appeal to a wide array of enthusiasts, as well as featuring some more eclectic styles of music from lesser-known and up and coming artists. I intend on doing some more research on the latter and buying some of it on my next visit!

However, on this occasion I walked out with the following:

Both are compilations but the Hooker one is a reissue of a very old comp from way back in 59. detroit blues, and its very good. Not heard the King one but pretty sure its a double.

Love buying music from independent record shops, rather than just using the likes of Amazon. Much more of an enjoyable experience, and there are loads of them around this area.

No never heard of it. It's way out in the sticks - Tuebrook - don't think I've ever even been there.

I've not lived in Liverpool since 1987 and back then there was at least a dozen places selling vinyl in the city centre, no need to go miles out searching for it. :)

In response to the strange opening hours query, it is indeed a 'passion' around a full time job; though saying that we (my wife and I) do take it seriously. We really want to create a quality record shop with exceptional customer service that is there for the local community. We offer free local delivery and from 11/09 will be putting local bands on in the shop to give them some extra exposure (and obviously introduce their fans to the shop!). It is very early days (less than 6 months old) but we have big plans! ;)

Great choice on the Wave Pictures by the way!

I reckon Macca's musical tastes are wider than you give him credit for. In the short time I spent scrounging his RCM we had The The, Primal Scream, some jazz trio or quartet whose name escapes me, and ok a bit of the Dan :)

I only have about 600 CDs and about 400 vinyl albums, but I know that's enough music to see me out. It could be a bigger collection of albums, but then most of them would never see the light of day, and there's so many other things need buying, which may or may not also be vinyl :eyebrows:

Oh I know he's got a wide taste in music; that's not in dispute. I just tend to be less of a creature of habit and more experimental with new stuff. I'd get bored listening to the same music I've always listened to for the last 20/30 years, or whatever, and I enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone:)

For me it's not a case of having enough music to 'see you out' (as if that were the case, like you, I'd have stopped buying it long ago), but keeping things fresh and interesting. I get a buzz out of finding a new band or artist I hadn't heard of before and collecting their output, and/or going to see them perform live, much more so these days than buying new equipment.

It's just where my head's at now, and therefore where I derive most pleasure!:cool:

I'm with you on Country & Western though, aside from Johnny Cash, who's superb. 'World Music' is rather diverse, but off the top of my head I'm a big fan of the likes of Ali Farka Touré, Ravi Shankar and Nitin Sawhney.

What about electronic/ambient? For me, especially these days, that's a rather diverse and interesting genre.

Classical music is an interesting one... I wasn't really into it at all until around 15 years ago, and then started to get really into it, especially the best recordings and performances from the 'golden era' (IMO, mid 50s to late 70s), on the best labels. I particularly love Shostakovich and Wagner, and now have 1200 classical albums on vinyl and around 200 classical CDs, not to mention around 3TB of classical music on hard drives!

there never really was tho; it was just someone thought they could make money out of you. some they did, some they didn't. Lots of crap in 60's and 70's too. I think what you can say now is there is a bigger field of genres available now as its not so much up to studios as to who gets to make records.

The three times I went to Glastonbury, I never used their bogs once, not for a dump anyway. I dropped me logs at M-way services then by sheer mind control held onto it until the journey home :) I didn't eat much anyway so it wasn't so tough.

On my first Glasto there was clearly at least one person who also avoided the bogs - when I emerged crawling out of my tent first morning, my hand immediately found a fresh overnight turd which squelched up through my fingers. Dirty bastard :(

Much better were the Rock & Blues festivals in Derbyshire, run and policed by Outlaws MC. They wouldn't put up with that sort of crap.

Hahaha... Maybe they're onto something! I actually had a similar conversation the other day with Del, but it was mostly to do with tights (although socks also came into it). I'd always thought it was a faux pas to wear tights with sandals, and she was wearing very open strappy high-heeled sandals (with a skirt) and sheer, skin-coloured tights.

I joked and said, you're not supposed to wear tights with sandals are you? She looked at me as if I was daft (which of course I am:eyebrows:) and said since when was I a fashion expert? And promptly informed me that it was fine, as long as they were sandal toe (I'm presuming you know what that is?), which they were, and promptly went off muttering about 'men'...

I dared not ask what was the point in spending all that money on pedicures and expensive nail varnish (which I pay for), if she's going to cover it up?:doh: But I thought to myself 'Best not go there'!:eek:

Apparently, that's totally not cool. You can wear trainer socks with them, but the 'done thing' is usually just to wear them with bare feet. There you go... I now feel suitably educated on the finer matters of hosiery etiquette, from a considerably less than fifty-something fashionista!:D

However, my main point was why waste time having pedicures and painting your toenails (on that occasion a rather cute sparkly bubblegum pink) if she's going to cover them up in tights, sandal-toe or not?

you get toeless ones that have a loop thus leaving toes clear but still get sheer legs. you have to be careful of type of sandal tho as you dont want the loop to show. but as the reinforcement is missing, sheer nudes should show toes up pretty well.

oh and flat sandals you never wear tights with lol

She's worn toeless tights before to work, during warmer weather, to keep her feet cool, but only with closed shoes, such as pumps or courts, as they look hideous with most sandals, for the reasons you say!:D:nono:

Footless tights are different, and pretty much like leggings, and on occasions she's worn those, although they're not really her thing. She prefers normal tights/stockings or none, and I think with sandals, none is better (with bare legs). But yes, with the sheer nudes she was wearing, you could still see her pink-painted toes, so I'm sure you'd have approved!:lol:

Flat sandals with tights would only be for old ladies or dorks!:rofl:

I sort of remember this shop opening around 4 years ago but at the time I had just walked out of my job and was self-funding myself back through college, had set up my own business and become self-employed so there wasn't much spare for most things never mind records.

However I made my first visit with a view to making a purchase earlier in the week, had a pleasant browse and I went back again today ;)

The shop is a decent size for a physical outlet and there is absolutely loads to look through.
Mainly new vinyl but some 2nd hand too.
No other formats which is actually quite refreshing.
Most genres covered and certainly plenty for me to look at with my diverse tastes and I'm going to be planning fairly regular trips if all goes well.

What I particularly like is the way the records are displayed/stored so that there is no chance of damage to the sleeves whilst browsing.
Prices seem keen and (in normal times) there is plenty of opportunity to listen to prospective 2nd hand purchases on the 3 turntables and a lounge area with a sofa for browsing the 7" singles.

The website seems ok and there is the opportunity to reserve and collect by making contact by email or via their facebook page.

The couple that run the shop seem pleasant and I know, (from the proverbial man down our local pub) that the shop is a hobby turned into a business and the passion in the operation is plain to see.

I bought much of my music collection from Andy's Records in Bedford on Saturday morning trips during my younger days so it is a joy to be able to pop in a physical shop, browse and buy after so many years.

I'd recommend a visit if you are in the area or have a look at their website or FB page if you are not :)

We also had a couple of other, smaller record shops, but all of them, including Andy's were pushed out by that useless behemoth known as HMV! :doh:

I know that Andy's were a local chain I think started in Cambridge with several branches in East Anglia but Chelmsford might have been a different one.

I daresay like most towns Bedford was decent for buying music in the early 80's with Andy's, Our Price, WH Smith, Boots, Woolworths and Littlewoods all selling records and tapes.

The Bedford HMV shut late 80's and once Andy's moved from the High Street it wasn't the same.
HMV did return years later but by then they didn't sell what I was buying and I had discovered the long gone and much lamented 'Barney's' in St. Neots.

Go back a generation and my Dad was buying his music from electrical shops in Bedford.

Edit for some drift - You mention Chelmsford - I was 'based' from an office in Great Baddow for a while with a previous job but I have have never actually shopped in Chelmsford.
I also have relatives nearby who are Automotive Engineers based in Margaretting, Ingatestone.
