They just don’t do it by and large do they? Statistically apparently they have better hearing than their male counterparts
They listen to music, play instruments, lots of females I know are into cars, computer games, photography, food and drink, porn, sport, even the violent ones.

My daughter has far better hearing than me and she is quite happy with 320 mp3. Its not that she can’t hear a difference between formats either; she can, but in her words “I don’t know why you spend all that money and time on Hi Fi, it doesn’t make the music any better does it?”
My usual response is it sounds better to me. I get promptly told that I’m “weird” and it’s just the equipment sounds better; the music is exactly the same.
Well, I think about this because she plays an instrument, listens to music and goes to concerts.
Can’t argue with her, it doesn’t make the music any better. It is either subjectively good music or it isn’t, and all the Hi Fi in the world can’t change that
Female logic eh! I’m still working on this one

I respectfully disagree. Firstly, I am adamant that better audio system makes music sound better. There's just more music that is discoverable on a good system, and consequently it is much more emotionally engaging.

Secondly, my 17 years old daughter, who is very critical of everything I do, prefers to listen to her favorite band, White Stripes, on my Maggies, because she can plainly hear that the music only comes to the full bloom when heard on a really good high end system. White Stripes deliver incredible slam that is simply not present on a lesser audio system. And it is that 'slam' that teenagers, with their irrepressible teenage angst, crave on a very chemical level.

Thirdly, my wife, who is extremely non-technical and is easily annoyed by any technology or engineered gadgetry, simply adores my audio system. It is the only thing in the world that can make her drop everything she's doing and sit down and focus intently on the playback. Otherwise, my wife is a triple world champion multi-tasker; she can perform 17 unrelated tasks at the same time without missing a beat. But when the music starts pouring out of my Maggies, she stops, drops everything, and starts fighting for a sweet spot with me:)

Ah, I think you may have missed my point Alex.
I have trouble getting the music I want to listen to on my Hi Fi when my daughters visit and end up listening to what they like for the duration, so its not they don’t appreciate the difference in sound quality between it and their largely portable rigs. But, despite having the money to buy a reasonable system they just don’t. They do cars/bikes, clothes, buy loads of music but Hi Fi….it just doesn’t happen.
It’s not that the women I know don’t enjoy listening to a decent system but they don’t do the audiophile bit, audition kit, get on forums, tweak and tinker, buy, collect.

Got it! It's the question of priorities. My daughter would spend all her money on clothes/makeup. Never anything left for audio...

I think that as our ears degrade with time, the more we need better HiFi's to reproduce the music to its absolute fidelity. Certainly in my case, I've found I just can't stand harshness of any kind any more, hence my choice of speakers perhaps. In my youth to late thirties, the louder and more "exciting" the sound, the better. Now it just hurts.

Laydeez have wonderful hearing, but just don't care about big boys' toys, of the audio variety anyway :eyebrows: I've found. I only know one lady with a lovely Quad system with 57's and it's delightful.

It's a few years ago now that i had this argument with my now ex-wife, but at the time we were just about to be married.

Anyway the cartridge on my TT was in need of replacement, and i was looking on getting a new one (can't remember which one but it was quite expensive), so she starts at me, going on that we need to save as much as possible, dresses, cake, flowers yada yada, so she says to me " how can you throw money like that away on a stereo", i explained about the fact that good sound requires a good system, and a good system costs money, well she says, i can't tell the difference between your hifi and my dads (he had an amstrad, nuff said), ok i said, we'll take the wedding photo's ourselves, save some money, i mean they're only photo's, whats the difference. Well she hit the roof, we can't have crap out of focus snaps, the photographer has all the propper gear, he knows how to get us to pose right. Ahhh i said, so we agree to get better results you need the right equipment..................

I GOT MY CARTRIDGE:):):)

Women well most of them don't find good quality of sound important, as long as they can sing along to it they're happy, and because they don't hold any value to the quality of music, they don't understand why we do, Men are from Mars, weomen are from venus as the old saying goes.

We have a few woman on the site, but yes quality audio is mainly a male thing on the whole

Though being in danger of stereotyping, I think most women are only too aware that music sounds better on good systems, but think the difference is they don't obsess about it like some men do. There are loads of male activities that fall on the autistic spectrum that are far less common in women.

lets be honest, a lot of men dont care about the quality of hifi either, is just of the small group out of the general population who do care, most tend to be male.

Another group I find (in general, there are always exceptions) who are not that bothered about hifi quality are working musicians, they are more interested in technique, interaction and interpretation all of which they can hear on a cheap system, possibly because they are listening more to the playing than the sound.

My working musician buddies are not into high quality audio gear not because they don't care about it, but because they are woefully aware that they'll never be able to afford it (most of them can barely scrape a living from selling their music). It's a 'sour grapes' syndrome for them. But it's certainly not that they don't appreciate highly resolving sound systems.

Every now and then some of my working musician buddy would come over, get blown away by the sound quality, and then sheepishly ask (always in the same tone): "So if someone like me wishes to get a sound that would be somewhat similar to this kind of a sound, how much money are we talking about?"

Once I start enumerating the cost of each and every component in my audio chain, they usually interrupt me halfway through with an impatient wave of the hand that says "Forgeddit! I'm sorry I've asked."

Mate great sound doesn't need to cost the earth, (it cost $100,000 so it must be good) isn't always true, read some of the posts on this forum, belkin cables are a great example that a good system can be put together on a modest budget, the knack is choosing kit that punches above it's price band and nowadays serching for little gems secondhand.

It’s not the amount you spend; it’s the care you take in choosing, adjusting to your preferences and matching the components.

That's exactly my point -- many working musicians can't afford even the cheap ass components that we on this forum fish for. After they pay all their bills, there isn't much left, not enough even for Logitech Touch and the Caiman.

Yes, thats exactly the point I was making, not suggesting that they didn't hear the difference, but that they didnt find it important enough to think about spending the extra. What money they did have would be better spent on their instruments or more music.

We must find spending money on kit more important in some ways than the music, after all, the money we spend on that new dac could have been used to buy CD's or to go to gigs so (at least at that level) we find the kit more important than the music.

Not wanting to sound anything other than sincere, there have been a few ladies in my life as my track record is not that good and none of them have given one little damn for Hi-Fi. They love music but they just don't give a damn for Hi-Fi. My latest model is exactly the same; she loves music but has no interest whatsoever in my Hi-Fi preferring as she does a Sony mini system to my Croft based joy. Janet openly admitted that, until I came on the scene, she didn't even know there was a difference between Hi-Fi components.

At least she and me have one thing in common... It's all in the music and that is where our main love lies.

My approach is that I only focus on buying higher quality components because I want to experience music in a more intense, direct and intimate way. So, in the end, it is all exclusively about music.

It is true that the absolute best way to experience music in its full direct glory is to attend a live performance. However, good live performances are few and in between (I can't tell you how many times have I left a concert hall feeling cheated out of my $100 or so, because the performers were merely going through the motions; in other words, it was a corporate gig). Furthermore, even if one is fortunate enough to attend a stellar live performance, it is a fleeting experience, and the memory of it quickly pales. In contrast, having a recording of that same stellar performance that you can replay at will on a gorgeous sound system is a gift that keeps giving and giving. And the more you familiarize yourself with that recording, the sweeter it gets, and you derive more and more pleasure from it.

So, in the end, it really truly is all about music and nothing but music.

The way you put it, sounds like a bad thing. In reality, women are absolutely right -- anything that's more complicated than operating a refrigerator is a veritable piece of shit. Geeks building geeky things for other geeks so that they all can geek out is a terrible, abominable way to go through human existence. Us ordinary human beings must insist that such practices be outlawed.

Maybe, it wasn't meant as a chalenge to your love of music, just trying to point to the differing priorities that different folk have.

If you want your stated goal, the cheapest solution is a bag of weed, it would give you all that.

But seriously, I suspect (but can't know) that many musicians can get all of what you have written just from the sheet music. Even if not by just reading the dots, then why bother with a recording of a particular performance when you can play it yourself, its all about different strokes for different folks.

I'm not sure I understand why so many people always assume that if you're a musician, you spend all your waking hours playing music with a group of people? Believe me, there are countless musicians, some really good ones, who mostly make music in solitude. Either they are solo artists playing piano recitals or whathaveyou, or they use the recording studio to create, on their own, rich tapestries of layered, lush music.

What's wrong with that? I certainly wouldn't call that creative process 'masturbation'.

I told my wife ( not asked, told) that I was going to get some small mini monitors for my tiny room as my wonderful LS5/9s are too bassy for the room and can't be pulled away from the rear wall............

I said I will get some used, then sell them when we move to a bigger house and go back to the LS5/9s - so this will COST US NOTHING.

Her reply

" you've had these for years? why do you want to change them now?"

ie as I have had them for years i must be happy with them and therefore no reason for change.

My wife says that I ruined her love of music!

I assumed this was because I had to have certain components to play it on and was seen as the "master of the controls". The "stereo" was deemed mine and not a joint facility. Fact was that even then (many years ago) she was not interested in the faff of playing an LP or tape and never actually wanted to use it.

In life before wife, I was always into music and something to play it on. I loved loud music that was dynamic, both hard hitting in the bass and high frequencies.

The love of music must have given way, later, as a desire to hear more detail and not the bigger picture. I think that women are only interested in the bigger puicture music-wise and if they want to hear their fave tracks, it doesn't matter how they hear them. Quality is not an issue.

To be honest I don't think the average non-audiophile woman is that different to the average non-audiophile man. Non of my friends or family ever sit down and actually listen to music as a sole activity. They all enjoy listening to music but they only see music as something you enjoy listening to in the background. They still enjoy listening to it, they just don't concentrate on it, or analyse it, or listen for subtle details etc, they just hear the music in general. The main difference within this between men and women is often that women are less interested in expensive electronic gadgets like hi-fi equipment. While the average bloke will gain some interest from reading about technical specs and slightly geeky stuff like that, women don't care. They just want something to play music, look nice, be easy to use, not take up much room and be cheap to buy. They're then happy to play their favourite music in the background while they read a glossy mag or whatever.

My wife enjoys listening to music and like me has a very wide taste in music. She has said that she believes music sounds better on our main Hi-Fi but she's perfectly happy listening to it on her laptop's crappy speakers. While she would prefer her laptop sounded like the main Hi-Fi there's no way she would considder spending anywhere near the sort of money I have to achieve that. She'd much rather spend the money on shoes and handbags. I guess we just have different priorities and that's fine with me. :)

I can second that as far as my wife goes. She has a much better bullshit meter than me, and had saved me more than once from falling prey to some sales mumbo-jumbo. She is capable of hearing the improvements if they're really there, or calling the marketing bluff if the 'improvements' are imaginary.

That's why I always keep her in my sweet spot:)

You've hit the nail on the head my friend, it's all about what you as an individual consider important.
Imagine, you go looking at hifi with someone (lets say a lady for the sake of this thread) who isn't really interested, she spends the whole time being uninterested, counting the seconds down till she can leave the shop, you leave the hifi shop and she then takes you to the womens clothing and bag section of her favorite department store, where she examins the bags and clothes with the same scrutiny you did 5 minutes earlier while looking at a new set of speakers. What's going through your head?

I am rather fortunate thast the other half is in to music and does appreciate a decent hi-fi. She also owns a complete Quad II system which we need to get "fettled" and set up as a bedroom hi-fi. She wants a pair of original B&W DM4's to go with the Quads, which should make for a nice vintage system. :)

Generalisations are always a problem ;)

A little like Andy I'm in fortunate position that the missus is into music and appreciates good HI-Fi sound. Her main xmas presssie this year was a mini USB DAC, a bantam amp, and a pair of wharfdale diamonds (as she works away during the week), and had become so used to good Hi Fi sound at home she couldn't listen to her computer speakers any more.

Most people who are into music don't actively sit there listening for problems, but when they've become used to a better 'sound quality' find it difficult to return to tosh.

What I do find very rare in women, and most men for that matter, is an interest in the bits that go towards making that good hi fi sound.

Add to that the fact that there are many different types of members on this site, some who are more into the hardware side of things, others who are more into the music itself.

The cost of my music collection vastly outstrips my 'hardware', the 'hardware' is just a means to an end.

That's why I like my FLAC/SqueezeBox network, I find myself listening to far more music, no more faffing around with cd's, or the ritual of cleaning the record and bolting it to the platter.

Perhaps I'm getting in touch with my feminine side ;)

Hi guys!!!

One year ago, I found, without really looking for them, a pair of PEL MODENA speakers...
Exactly the ones I had not the money for being them 10 years before... Icing on the cake, more or less 20% under their 2nd hand value...

So, bought them...

My wife reaction was quite clear: "Do you "really" NEED these new speakers?" she asked me...

As an answer, I put one of her favourite CD's in the CD player, sat her at the sweet spot; "just listen" I told her...

Then she said:
"O.K.! I understand it, not sure I'll can stand those awfull boxes in the living room, but you're right, they sound great!"...

So, that's it... I love her!!! ;)

It's not just Hi-Fi. Men obsess about everything.

You got that one right - interesting thread and I have to say I'm kind of with the girls a bit, as it's the music itself that's important for me. My disposable income goes on gigs and CD's, I would love to upgrade my gear, but every time I fire up Spotify, or the next Word pops through the door, it's off to Amazon - and these damn bands keep touring and working hard, the only break I get is Christmas and New Year!

I do often wonder at some of the more exotic systems in that are we actually listening to the music or the gear?

Mind you, I'm just jealous as I cannot have it both ways ;)

I wonder at some of the more exotic systems in that are we actually listening to the music or the gear?

Totally agree with you.

Really? Is that true? How did you find that out? Who gives a f.... ? ;0)

Do you hear the terrible new about Jordan (Kate Price) by the way? Apparently, she did not die horribly in a fiery car crash whilst in America for the Oscars.

Oooh that's mean. But very funny! Really, I wouldn't - not if she was the last woman on earth. (Not that she'd be interested in a fat balding middle aged tw@t like me anyway - I'm not rich enough!)

However Cheryl Cole, if she didn't speak and started eating properly... (Sorry to all the ladies for being a sexist pig! - That's Colin's job. Well being a pig, at any rate!)

The wife loves all this vintage hifi passing through but it's all too much like Brain Surgery for her to use it..Her famous word are 'I'd rather you be obessed with your hobby than be out messing around with other women'

You get the choice?

Blokes that mess around with other women obviously don't respect what they have at home & apparently don't care if they loose it.

I'm not condoning adultery, not in the slightest, but I don't think you can be that simplistic about it.

I have no choice, only my wife would have me! ;0)

I picked up a turntable from a lady in her 70s? a while ago and stepped into the room it was waiting in for me only to be greated with a massive pair of Tannoy Winsors, a Cello amp, Rockport TT with Mission Mechanic, some special 7 box pre-amp and Esoteric P03/D03.

According to her son (who I was buying the TT through) it was his late dad's originally but his mum had got into it and continued upgrading to the Esoteric, Cello etc.

Perhaps it is a priority/money thing. Perhaps once it's there women appreciate it and maybe still want to improve but the cost of a lot of it pushes it all right down in priority. Men on the other hand can be a truely derranged in the priorities department..

Secondly, the industry is built around a nerdy thing which is definately a male trait - why would you feel the need to even investigate upgrading unless either you were entirely unhappy about the sound or nerdily lusting over other gear? I'd argue that most men upgrade cos of the later and could easily be happy with what they've got.
