Hello,

Just out of curiosity. How does the 1200/1210 tt sound? Do they come close to the master tape?

And are the brand new 1200/1210s better than the older ones? Ones from the 80s and 90s etc.

Regards.

Hi Shane

How does it sound , well pretty good out of the box ! but can be a bit dark sounding and a little recessed , loads of upgrades available .

Have you ever heard any master tape's Shane ? never heard any myself but ... iv'e come across photo's on the net of mastering engineers and quite often there is an SL1200mk2 or 1210 sitting nearby which they use to test the acetate , this doesn't mean it sounds like the master tape though , just a consistant and reliable TT perhaps and rugged .

I thought you were going for a PL71 ? if you can pick up a 1210 for around £150-200 you won't lose much on it so long as its in good nick , sell it on if you don't like it :)

Hey up Chris,

No, I've never heard a Master tape machine. Oh I wish!! Only tt I heard with master tape sound is the good old Townshend Rock II.

Yes, sometime in the year I will love to try the PL-71 turntable, and maybe get a Decca super Gold to go with it.

If I don't get a PL-71, then I might think of getting a moded 1200/1210.

Well myself and a M8 of mine went to the penta show back in 1990 , we heard the Rock Reference , both our jaws were on the floor  that was some deck and belt drive !.

A PL71 with a super gold ! that could be incredible , but you will need a good valve phono stage like the Croft RIAA i would have thought as i believe it was designed for this type of cart .

I see you have NVA amps , and the phono stage too ? in which case it should be fine .

Chris,

The only phono stage I have is a Musical Fidelity X-LPS. Later in the year I might upgrade to the NVA P90sa preamp with built in phono stage.

I think Mr Dunn uses a Decca Super Gold with good results with his NVA/PL-71 set up.

Yes i've heard Richard's PL71 but with the SPU , i liked it and his Phono 2 .

With the SL1210 your cartridge choice is more limited to MM's really but has anyone tried a super gold with the stock techie arm ?

Shane, a Techie is for life, not just for January... Why? because you'll need to try it in stock form and then try each upgrade in order as funds allow. As has been said here many times now, Marco's deck is really something else built on a Techie platform and motor. No reason why you couldn't do the same, but it will take time and dedication as well as money. You'd learn a heck of a lot by the experience methinks..

Not a Super gold, but l had a Lyra Helikon in a stock arm and it sounded great:).
