M2Tech Young first listen

Been comparing the new M2Tech Young dac to my reference the Metric Halo ULN8 , I really think I prefer the Youmg, If anyone has the Audiolab or Rega or Arcam I would be very interested in a bake off!

I haven't compared it to theWeiss yet all the 202's are out, I have only compared it to the Metric Halo ULN8 which is a good DAC, and as I mentioned I think I prefer the M2 Tech,it just sounds fuller and a bit more human I am hoping that when Marco sorts out the drivers it might improve further.

I've got one of these M2Tech Young DACs on home trial atm & I must say I'm very very impressed!

I've had the Young here a week & straight out of the box it sounded very good & has opened up even more since. It makes the AN DAC Zero I was using before sound quite rolled off at the frequency extremes! (& I love this Dac) It has a slightly brighter overall sound, but I wouldn't call it bright per se. The bass weight is very good, well extended & textured. The mids are very open natural & the treble performance is so clear & grain free! It's quick, punchy & fatigue free!

I've used my Win7 laptop (async USB), a SB Touch & AN CDT (s/pdif) & V+ box (Toslink) & through all connections it sounds great! The Dac was built with Async USB in mind & is capable of handling up to 384kHz sampling rate and 32 bits resolution (USB input). It will also handle 192kHz & 24 bits using s/pdif & sounds very good with the SB Touch!

I've tried a few Dac's against it in the last week, a couple of cheaper Dac's that it's simply been a step up from (The rDac impressed though at the price) & a couple of older designs & has sounded comfortably better to my ears than all of them!! The treble performance is probably amongst the best I've heard from a digital source. I've got a couple more to try, but atm the Young is here to stay!

It's £1200 and worth every penny , whether it's twice as good as the m-dac., which I also own , and is £600 .......
Well anyway.how.can you.quantify a difference in sound,quality in terms of percentages?
Suffice it to say the young makes all your favourite music even more enjoyable to posted to , but it will expose the weaknesses in poor cds vinyl rips and as for mp3, don't even go there , they're vile and they're shown in all their gory lack of detail

I’m a bit surprised to read that someone prefers the “sound” of any particular Dac over the Metric Halo ULN8.
One of the features of the Metric is you can change the sound considerably with various plugins.
I can happily accept that for domestic stereos the Metric is an expensive option and has a very steep learning curve if one wants the best from it but it’s the versatility of the unit and its ability to mimic that I suggest sets it apart from “domestic” Dacs.
When you add functionality, build quality, support and its ability to integrate virtually any source into a system imo it’s very hard to beat.

The Metric Halo ULN8 is an incredibly versatile bit of kit, no doubt about it, and you can indeed do almost anything to the sound, including the 15 'character' filters.
But using it purely as a Dac, the Weiss was better ,better resolution ,tone timbre everything in fact, if you need acDAW then I can recommend the MH if you just want the best sounding dac then go for the Weiss.

The Stahl Tek is a good dac, but in its current version at least, completely outclassed by the Weiss Medea Plus, which is IMHO the best dac currently available by some distance.

Having owned a few Weiss dac's over the years including a Medea or two.

Does the Medea Plus have the same sonic signature as the 202 just more refined?

Indeed Andrew Jones is a talented designer with a deep understanding of acoustics, cabinet design and ability for producing world class transducers.

Which TAD product's in particular were you looking to Keith?

Tony Hi, no the Medea ( plus) is quite different, it has no sound if that makes any sense and huge resolution, it makes the 202 , as good as it is seem a little mechanical in comparison.
We have sold them to owners of well everything else.
Re TAD well we use their compression and 15" dynamic drivers in the horns, and as you say Andy seems very capable, their room always sounds good in Munich,
