Pie in the sky at the moment it seems. I have also been looking at the Rega which is advertised in a number of places but nobody actually seems to have one in stock.

When you can pay 5 figures for a modified LP12 who are you kidding Dave, £2k looks like a bargain ;)

Even the money some members are laying out on 1210 mods on here is more than that £2K :eyebrows:

If you haven't ditched all of your CDs consider the 8200CD player. I treated myself to one for Christmas and I have to say that comparing like for like i.e. lossless rip from the Mac connected via USB with the original CD - The CD is way better. The whole performance is much more real and together sounding. This is using standard iTunes though, so I guess that's where the problem lies.

I'm more than happy though. I now have vinyl for serious analogue listening, CD for serious digital listening and the computer for background music/internet radio. That's not to say the computer is bad by any stretch, radio has never sounded so good.

When I spoke to John earlier in the year the projected date for the dacs was february 2011 but i'd imagine it will now be more like sometime in the summer.

Don't know why the Rega has to cost so much (and as for £2K+ DAC's - they're 'avin a laff...), but in the audio world, £500 is positively cheap :) How much better than a Gator Caiman it'll actually be I don't know.

Ask hifi dave, as he's our friendly Rega supplier :)

Looking to the future the £500 mark could be the magic number with regards to dacs. If the latest dacs like the audiolab prove to be quite competitive against the 1-2k gear then maybe that's where the focus will shift.

I keep forgetting that custom casework (and possibly custom displays and switchgear) account for the majority of costs, the electronics not that costly these days. I expect a Caiman with chunkier casework (to accommodate all these mods :)) would add a ton to the price..

I have to agree with you there mate, but I suppose I'm a bit biased ;)

If you scroll up the page to post number 12, there's a picture of it ;)

It has the rather nice addition of a rotary encoder volume knob rather than the up down buttons of the CDQ.

(or did you mean without the analogue pre?)

I was hoping for just a DAC, as I've already got the other bases covered as it were... CDM/DAX/Q/SX/P (not a good photo I'm afraid, Q pre-amp is above the SX & P power amps), just a nice slot in replacement for the DAX would be nice, 17" black metal box would be lovely :)

I have a silver 8000S. At the beginning of the year they were being sold off for at least £100 less than the black version. I got mine for about £250 new. I love it, and I I'd love to get one of the new CD/DACs to go with it. And of course, that will now need to be silver to match the amp. I also think the silver ones look more like new items, where as the black ones can simply look like just copies of the old 8000A.

And it's half the normal width, in keeping with their new M-blocks I suppose :(
