Beautiful work, but to do this in the UK for clients would cost hundreds of pounds these days sadly.

Hifi dave and I had a wonderful engineer who really cared deeply about his work. He fitted the Clock and new laser-pen to my CD player, buying Mission's redundant set up jig for the latter job. Sadly, ten years or so ago, the market in audio repairs fell apart and he changed job before retiring. These days, with the audio middle-market now gone and replaced with the used market, his skills would be highly desirable again.

I have always greatly admired people who can do this kind of work. I am sure they get loads of satisfaction when they see wreck brought back to life. I just assume that this is getting more and more difficult now days because of lack of spare parts.

Most electrical/electronic components from days gone by are still available either as an original part or from a different manufacturer but with the same component values, so refurbing old amps etc isn't as hard as you may think, in fact a lot of older amps are great as upgrade projects, where you upgrade caps / resistors etc, vastly improoving what was once a good piece of kit into somthing a bit special.

The only things that can be a bit of a headache are cosmetic parts, knobs, buttons facias etc, as new parts are not going to be available, so you need another unit to canbalise for spares.

And you're right about the feeling of satisfaction you get, it's great:)

The guy is an artist. It's a shame he lives in the 'States or I would have entrusted him with my Hafler and Audiolab :(
