Another Noob

Hi,

Ian here from Berkhamsted, Herts. Well when I say new, I've actually been a member for 18 Months but unbelievably only made my first post his week. I belong to fair number of other fora and am a pretty regular poster on wigwam.

One of the reason for starting to be active is reading the (very long) thread started by gramofone (here (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6555&page=34)), what pleasant surprise that the thread went for 34 pages and not a hint of abuse was thrown at the OP a bit of piss taking yes, but very mild. Not what I'm used to at all and very welcome it was as well.

As for me, above all I love music but how it is reproduced plays a significant part in my enjoyment. I am totally non-techie which I know is the basis for a lot of guys in here, but should give me an opportunity to ask plenty of stupid questions.

Been a constant box swapper over the years, mostly speakers (at least 10 different pairs in last 2 years) But for the moment my itch seems to be well and truly scratched and the only addition would be a set of good headphones.

So you need musical tastes as well eh, bit tougher that one.

Early listening was heavily influenced by my brother in the early 60’s which at the time was west coast American folk/country rock Buffalo Springfield etc. that genre of music still holds sway over my musical collection (currently 800ish Vinyl and about 400 CD) Over the next 10-20 years my musical direct changed direction but not heavily and moved me more back to this country and R&B are Fleetwood Mac (original) Spencer Davis etc. Onto prog rock era with Yes early moody blues stuff. Also earlier on got very influenced with the local pub rock scene and my love of live music above all else saw many great bands during the 60’s 70’s Kersal Flyers, Zombies, Nick Lowe and Brinsley Schwarz to name a few. Never really made the Beatles & Stones thing until they were long gone, Punk and New wave passed my by as well with the exception of a few at the pop end (The Jam) It’s only been in retrospect that I’ve started enjoying bands I missed first time round. The 80’s & 90’s saw me more into bands like Deacon Blue, Oasis, Manic Street Preachers.
This last 10 years has simply been same style/genres but performed by newer bands like Embrace, killers, Kings of Leon.

Live Music as I said is what I really love, but only managed about 6 gigs this year but all great (well maybe not all) these have been.

Jackson Browne @ Albert Hall – Pretty poor, not him but the sound system/acoustics
Zombies @ Hammersmith – Truly excellent O&O start to end, Blunsone’s voice as good as ever.
Joan Armatrading @ ST. Albans – Excellent
Moody Blues @ Nottingham – Good but not great.
Nils Lofgren @ Milton Keynes – Best gig EVER truly fantastic

You have to be well off to live in Berko these days - and then I saw your systems, which confirms it :) All the fast commuter rattler-trains used to stop at Berkhamsted Station, so I used to drive the four miles down the road to this station back in the day. Knew the place well in my youth.

Just my sort of T/T (and the rest isn't too shabby either! ;))

What do you make of the SPU/Schick combo in terms of its main sonic strengths/style of presentation? I'm seriously thinking of trying a 9" Schick on the Techie with my SPU :cool:

Sorry, don't know anything about "Berko", as I've never been there. In fact, being a Northerner, I know very little about any areas down south.... However, I'm sure that "Berko" is very nice!
