View Full Version : What would you do?

Hey hey good people :)

Slight dilemma here & possibly rather unusual as well :eyebrows:

I have a very nice Omega watch that my uncle gave to me before he passed away & tbh i never ware it because it's a little bit too bling for me. When i say that what i mean is it's solid gold, bracelet & the watch itself :) I can't say i'm too sentimentally attached to it either tbh so i'm wondering what to do

I'm quite happy with a stainless steel thing that tells me the time :eyebrows: In fact the only time i have worn the Omega is when one of my watches has packed up. I don't want to be messing about changing watches for whatever situation arises, i just need something i can do anything in that will survive whatever i'm doing....

Anyway, i have just checked up on gold prices & they are lets say incredibly high (http://goldprice.org/gold-price-uk.html) £28.4 per gram of 24 carat gold is just about the highest that i have ever seen, so i decided to weight the watch itself. As it happens it comes in at about 61.5g so allowing for the glass etc i'd say there is a good 58g of gold there....

The thing is it's not your joe average 9 carat gold, the whole thing is actually 18 carat :eyebrows: Effectively it means the watch should be worth £1235 scrap value as of now. However it is an Omega & as such may be worth more in one piece ;)

So, do i keep a watch that i'll never ware & leave it sitting in a draw or do i take advantage of the high gold prices as they are now & get some cash

 Btw, i'm not short of the folding stuff, it's just a question of what can go up will eventually come down & right now people appear to be investing in gold. Once all this financial turmoil settles down (if it ever does) then i'd expect gold prices to drop by quite a lot...

So to sum it up...

1. I don't ware it so it's superfluous, it sits in a draw in it's box with it's booklet/receipt thingy.
2. Gold prices are very high & they'll drop sooner or later.
3. Even though my uncle gave it to me i'm not going to keep it just because of that. If i was sentimental about everything i inherited i'd have no room to move in this house
4. It's not as if i need the money though.

On the basis of that lot, what would you do?

Keep it , omegas always have value regardless of gold content... Hard times can hit a man by supprise ... You might not need the cash now but you might one day... In the mean while relish the ownership of a beautiful time peice!

Hi Hamish, it forgot to mention it works a treat ;)

Thought i'd give it a wind & off she went :eyebrows:

Yes it is nice i must admit, but i'm a little more practical.. What you say does make some sense though, only get rid if i need to

What model is it? A gold seamaster in good condition could be worth a lot.

It's not a fancy Chronograph thingamibob :eyebrows: Just a plain rectangular faced watch. Though calling it plain is kind of odd if i'm honest. I think the strap makes it, it's very complex & some might call it quite artful..

Maybe get it valued just so you know :)

Then keep it in a safe place.

Hmm, i don't honestly know... However now that you mention it it could well be as it's pretty fine & each link would be smaller than a standard rice grain (must be GM rice i'm eating :eyebrows:) ;)

Dont sell it to any of those scrap gold merchants on the telly. You will not get anythiong near what its worth.

Being an Omega, there is a high intrinsic value, no matter what case material is used. I would suggest speaking to some knowledgeable watch collector types. Watchuseek (http://forums.watchuseek.com/forum.php) is a rather good forum. I am sure someone there can give you a suitable valuation.

Sounds like a nice vintage. You might want to look at a professional site like Watch finder to make sure a collector sees it. I dont know their fees.

Cheers Andy, don't worry, i'm not daft :eyebrows: I know what it's scrap value is worth IE just the gold itself ;)

Cheers for the link as well :)

Not saying i'm getting rid of it, but while i'm totally undecided it can sit in a draw quite happily.

What's this "rice grain" thing out of interest & is it a good thing?

I don't know much about them, but I'd love one of those old seamasters with the thin bezel and big face with a leather strap ... Bloody stunning things
I used to have a really nice tissot with a glass back showing off the mech... I lost it and replaced it with a tissot touch ... Quite nice, not as nice, to heavy, I dont wear it ...

leave it to me in your will Mark

Beads of rice is a term used to descibe the look of the braclet, solid gold i presume in this case, i had a few stainless ones in the past but i'm not a fan of gold, sounds like it is from the sixties, type of movement, original box and paperwork helps with the value, gold watches are not so popular anymore so i would keep it and wear it on special occasions as the value is not important to you, i used to collect watches and still have an interest.
Get a valuation from a non biased source, photos would be nice for us that like this sort of thing, if you are able to take the back off i can date and tell you what type of movement you have, please don't attempt it without the right tools though.

They are very nice and sit well under a shirt cuff, still got 4 of them and all different, sold a few in the past as well, prefer chronos now, this is my favourite.

Speaking as someone who loves Omegas & has had a Speedmaster for years (mine's a variant of what Jon's picture shows - silver face & slightly different bits & bobs), my course of action would be this. Take your uncle's watch to a good jeweller who deals in both new Omegas and secondhand quality watches. Trade it in for something you would wear, but make sure it's an Omega, for two good reasons:

1. It will always remind you of your uncle, which is important.
2. They are fabulous watches and always a pleasure to own & use.

Excellent idea. An Omega you would be happy to wear would be an excellent choice.

Would much rather have an Omega than a gangsta pimp/merchant banker Rolex. :)

Hey! Nothing wrong with a Rolex and I am neither a Merchant Banker or a gangsta pimp (wouldn't mind having a go at being a gangsta pimp though:eyebrows:)

My advice, as you don't need the watch or the money, would be to pass it to a younger male relative the same way your uncle did. You may not like blingy gold watches (I do..they look great with a well tailored black suit jacket) but a teenage cousin or nephew will love it. If I was your uncle I would rather you did that with my gift than cash it in.

That's a shame - fortunately for me one of my younger brothers managed to provide a male heir last year so the pressure's off!

I know there''s nothing wrong with Rolex. They are a superbly well made watch. Its just "in my eyes", their image has been somewhat tarnished.

In my experience life has a nasty tendency of giving the acquisitive a slap every now and then ;)
Nice things are great but a trade for an experience is often worthwhile.
If it has no sentimental value, the glitter and value doesn’t impress you or your friends, then sell it and spend the money on a high class whore.

(just saying :eyebrows:)

Blowers of Hull (on-line and a retail shop), and Chronomaster (on-line) are both reputable, and will qive you a quote if you send pics etc.

If you go for a high class whore, please be assured of our utmost discretion but you must post pics here.

Mark,

That watch is worth far more than scrap gold prices or gold weight,
It go's up in value almost every year and should be passed on and kept in your family.
If you really need the money to feed your family thats a different story, but selling your uncles Omega will come back to haunt you.

They are rather good and its quite obvious how much better the whole experience is compared to a £20 "Saturday Night Special" down near the docks.

There was one particular lady I knew who wouldnt even answer her phone for less than a grand. But you did get all the Moet you could drink (or lick off her!!) and bacon & eggs in the morning.
