That is a beautiful stand your turntable is built into.....it reminds me of a stand I saw at the recent Whittlebury show..... by urrrrrrr:scratch: CML Audio The Inquisition Rack :eek:

Details added. The stand was custom built to my design by Russ Collinson. The top is sprung mounted with adjustable sorbothane feet and allows for different decks to be fitted.

That’s some very posh Hi Fi furniture you’ve got there Ian and some rather expensive looking kit.
I can’t help wondering like Darren and Dave R if you’re getting to hear anything like the true potential of the music reproducing part of the system with the bits in their current position :scratch:
I would have thought that the speakers would benefit greatly from the removal of the large unit in-between and being brought another foot or more away from the walls.
It seems to me that in their current position the bass frequencies are radiating into a 3 sided box, much like where speakers are squeezed into the alcoves either side of a chimney breast.
Maybe this might be of interest to you. It’s a pdf downloadable file. It’s fairly easy reading and rather well done without being over technical.

A fairly basic rule is to have as little as possible in the way of reflecting boxes between speakers and particularly with valve equipment, don’t rack the amps etc between speakers.

That turntable installation is one of the best looking purpose built plinths I think I've ever seen. Souped up SL12**? Common as muck they are and IMO a restored and properly plinthed SP10 is the business ;)

While not being an expert by any means, I have read quite a bit about room acoustics, especially in relation to speaker placement. The problem with using generic articles is that they are all without exception written for standard box speakers with front radiating drivers and the rules do sort of work for those. Although not all (AN/E's for example ONLY work when placed tight into a corner). Once you step out of the realms of box speakers a different set of rules apply, for example most omni speakers like mine are specifically designed to work with room reflections not fight against them as most speakers do. I would also disagree with the analogy of an alcove, if you look at the driver position your observation is simply not true.

Some people have the luxury of having speakers in free space with nothing in between and the option of setting up speakers in absolutely the best position regardless of other considerations. For the rest of us it's about compromise and one of mine is that throwing away (there is nowhere else for it to go) a £2k piece of furniture is not really practical.

One area that IMO is common to all good speaker placement is the ratio of listening distance to speaker separation and in that respect mine are in exactly the right ratio. So moving them closer together although theoretically better would mean my listening position is then in completely the wrong place and I would then need to sit on a coffee table to listen. So as I said It's all about compromise.

Room acoustics is a bit of a thing with me so forgive me if I’m trying to teach grandma to suck eggs ;)
I realize that living in the room as well as listening to Hi Fi necessitates some compromises. My place is an acoustic nightmare and many months on I still haven’t ironed out a number of irritating problems :steam:

I agree the article is rather general but I thought it was a reasonable attempt at what can be a fairly complex subject.
I like your Luxmans btw, even if they have got glass tubes in ;)

Now there is something you don't see very often! A working pair of JR150s :) The last pair i saw working was probably back in about 1990 & judging by the owner (hardcore raver who liked his music loud) i doubt they were fully working for long :(

I must admit it's not often i feel sorry for a pair of speakers, but this was one occasion i did :eyebrows:
