tone arm recommendations

i have been have trouble with my stock technics arm lately losing sound from the right channel.On closer inspection i have noticed that there is a crack at the bit between the bracket and the end of the arm where the tone arm cable comes through :(.

So a new tone arm is needed,i know jelco's are used by quite a few here but what others would be a good match for the technics.

I was intending on getting new speakers but if i don't i could have a bugdet of about £350.

One option would be to buy a another technics arm and send it to Audio origami for a rewire and a bearing check. Johnny also foam fills the arm tube to dampen the resonant arm. He thinks the arm design is not a bad one and just needs a tweak. You could then try a KAB oil damper to bring the resonance down even more. I have a Jelco 250st which was easy to fit and you can tell the difference but i miss having a changeable headshell.
If i had a better budget i would have gone for a 750 and then you could have the benefits of fancy headshells, oil damping and the ability to go for a MC cartridge route.

Failing that then the Jelco 250st is the one to go for .

how would a AO rewired arm compare to a jelco 250? Are we talking minimal differences?

Colin,is there a reason you never went for the AO rewire yourself.

The AO option sounds interesting and it may also let me still get some speakers as well.

To be honest im going with here say on the rewire. But when i communicated with Johnny on his forum i found him a very sincere person who didnt give me any bullshit or sales patter. And he is considered the tonearm doctor from what i hear on the forum. The only reason i didnt is i found a 2nd hand Jelco at a show for £150. There was no way i was walking out of there without it.

Until just a few days ago the G-704 (aluminum rather then wood) was on my table, and these are killer arms.

I also had the 704 mounted on a Kenwood KD-600 DD table, it was a very good pairing, detailed and very robust sound.

It's a little out my price range and it's in the US but will keep in mind and see if any come up over here at a better price.

Darren, if you wanted to go down the AO rewire route, I have a stock Technics arm sitting around doing nothing. I have an AO rewired arm, complete with KAB damper and Sumiko headshell on mine, hence the stock arm going spare. PM me if you're interested.
