I'm looking for a place who can supply me with 2.5'' Aluminium box section precision cut i'm only wanting 7'' Length!

Scrap yard or have a trip around some local metal fabricaters or steel stockest, you can usually get a off cut for a drink

How do you think they got stuff square and flat before milling machines came along ;)

:eek: Cut on a precision saw thats what, i've just got some bar cut that acurate you can hardly see a cutting mark init, btw it's not to be welded ter summert it's a passive pre amp sleeve to match something top secret

It’s not my wish to wind you up further Andre but your dismissal of getting some box section from a scrap dealer and finishing by hand shows a lack of understanding of what can be achieved with a file and a bit of engineers blue and a reference block.

When I was a lad, part of an engineering apprentices training was to make a “perfect” cube from a rough cut block of metal. This was done with a file and scrapers to dimensional tolerances within tenths of thousands of an inch and micron surface finishes.

In fact, the very machines that produce “precision” components are often finished by hand; lathe, milling and grinding machine beds are hand scraped after they’ve been ground.

You may not have the skills or tools to do this but I can assure you that it is possible to achieve greater accuracy and better finish by hand than you are likely to get from a “precision cut” whatever that is.

Given your obvious contempt for “modern ways” mass production, etc, one might have thought that a hand finished product from something that has been thrown out might be right up your street.

Just a thought mate before you slag anyone else off for stupid suggestions ;)

Sorry, thats not true, my late father was a toolmaker by trade, and he went through exactly the training that Welder described, though I remember him saying in his case once he had made the cube to the required tolerance, the next step was to make the square hole in a plate to fit the cube into.

He used to finish the beds for center less grinders, Those precision machines you mention didn't spring fully formed from the earth, someone had to make their ancestors by hand. If you look at any high precision part (high precision, not just close enough) it will involve a hand finishing step.

A file is but only the first step in finishing.
