View Full Version : Origin Live or Trichord?
I'm in need of a new phono stage and I'm seriously considering the Origin Live Ultra MKII and the Trichord Research Diablo Phono Stage with the "Never Connected" power supply.
If you have experience with one or both of these units please provide feedback.
I am presently on a waiting list for either the Luxman E-06 phono stage (actually the other half of my C-06 preamplifier) or a Luxman E-1. But I'm considering alternatives since receiving an email this morning informing me that I'm number 6 on the waiting list (I've already been waiting 2 months!).
Your opinions and feedback would be most appreciated.
Rick.
I found the MK1 Orgin live quite coloured no idea if Mk2 has the same issues If it was my money I spend it something like the ANT or better still the Nighthawk

Hi John,
I have listened to the Ray Samuels, I liked it overall but found it did not give the music appropriate "weight".
Specific to the A.N.T., I had never heard of them until your post...I'm digging for info as we speak.
Rick.
Another one to consider is the Moon lp3. Got good reviews and is meant to be very quiet. A new version is coming out and ive seen the present model with 50% reductions ( £250).
The Nighthawk with a Decca has plenty of weight I guess everything system dependent The two people I know that have one say the one thing it has it spades is weight
My other suggestion is get Nick to make you one (Lurcther) from what everyone says they are really special

Hi Rick
I have the Diablo with NCPSU ! its very good 'certainly the best phono stage i have used but in all honesty that's not saying much as for 15 years i used a Concordant valve pre with its internal RIAA ,which was good but nothing special really .
To me the Diablo is very open and neutral with good strong bass , the flexibility of the thing is also one of the reasons why i bought it ! plenty of options and 48 db gain which is just right for the DL160 and a max of 74 db with ultra high sensitivity for low output mc's .
The ANT Kora se is a very good phono stage , i had a listen to it through some Denon headphones using a 1200 /Jelco750 and AT0C9
There is also the Whest 2 'worth considering , but i do like my Diablo:)

This is very interesting. I am using a Dynavector P75 on MM input with SPU and 1:23 SUT.. It's got me pretty far but I can help thinking there is more in there.
I borrowed a LCR tube phonostage which sounded good with an IO cart when I've listened to it but with the SPU it is a bit flat and does not show off the SPUs wares so well to my ears.
The Diablo is one that's on my list too. The Nighthawk one was interesting - not so keen on so many switches or the Li-ion batt that will last a few years and then give up the ghost. Also did you have to unplug it ever time not charging - that's going to get tedious in a rack perhaps?
Def some food for thought though.
The Nighthawk charge lasts pretty well, I've only had it die on me once but I have 2 other phono stages so this isn't a big hassle for me. Charge time is quick. The problem I have remembering to turn it off. As for replacing the battery, I don't think this is a big issue, it's not like a phone you charge almost daily, the battery should last several years.
Nice...some great feedback thus far.
Checking out the signatures I spot some mighty fine gear that would look good in my man-cave!!
Specific to the Trichord gear, I get nothing but very positive feedback about the Diablo and NC power supply...the term reference caliber has repeatedly been used.
Thye Origin Live Ultra II seems a bit unknown, other than the feedback here regarding the first iteration of this PS no one can speak to it.
My mind keeps wandering back to the Luxman phono pre's...I do like all things Luxman, I just don't want to end up waiting a year for a PS.
By the way, mounted my new-to-me Fidelity Research FR-14 tonearm with silver wire tonight...just finished listening to Alan Parsons Pyramid - very nice. I'm a tweaker so I'll spend the next few weeks dialing this arm in, but thus far the synergy with my Lux PD-300 is really very special - and quiet!!!
I do get the feeling that no matter how lavishly presented, Luxman gear is very expensive for what's inside and the performance on offer - just my thoughts..
I love Glenn Croft's phono stages and the £600 one he does is based on the "R" spec. I'd also give a shout for Mr Lurcher's take on things if he's able to do summat for you.
While I'm in whingebag mode, I also feel that so many of these "legacy" products are leftovers from when the audio industry was more bouyant and still priced accordingly. Internal components are ten-a-penny and even sensible "boutique" ones aren't hugely pricey. I'd rather put my vinyl money into a dedicated hand made phono stage, rather than a purely-for-profit confection for people with more money than sense. Just my rambles - put the Cambridge 640P into a fancy box, charge many hundreds for it and it would be hailed as the second coming :(

Wow...are we related? Your sentiments match mine very closely.
Price and performance are very far apart in this hobby and Industry...which is why unfortunately it is so difficult to make a decision.
I'm actually running a 640p in my system right now as a hold-over to get me to the next long term PS in my system...I don't feel like I'm missing much, albeit I did try out a Chris Johnson modded PS Audio GCPH and there was a difference - an improvement.
I would sincerely appreciate more info specific to your recommendations - Glenn Croft and Mr. Lurcher - these are gents and products I have no prior experience with.
Fun thread,
Rick.

Dave ' i aggree with you on that , but you see i had a 640p and tried the Diablo on a 30 day sale or return from Alex (audio afair) and even with the basic and it is a basic psu ! it blew the 640p out of the window and kicked it down the street , that is with the DL160 of course , but also it was an ex dem unit with £200 knocked off ! so i grabbed it :) with the NCPSU its oh so quiet and it doesn't need fancy mains cables either ' which is a plus .
John, thanks very much for the links, I'm going to look closely at the info provided. I take it these are folks here on this site?
I'll include that I just received an email from a long time audio acquaintance who I have bought and sold many wonderful pieces of gear from and to. He informed me that he has just purchased the Jasmine LP2.0MKII after spending a few weeks with the previous SE version. Now this gent was running the Jasmine with a Zu Denon DL-103 cartridge and found the pairing very good...good enough to order one.
So I'll ask for any thoughts regarding the Jasmine???
Rick.
Just to throw another in the mix, I recently got the Pure Sound P10 and am over the moon with it. At this stage I honestly cannot say that I need more. I also rate the Graham Slee phono stages highly!
