Does anyone here know who makes them? (Sowter?)

There have been rumors that they wind their own, but I just don't see that as true. Transformer companies make trransformers, like car companies make cars, as far as I am concerned.

I figured since this is a UK based forum, you guys would have more of an inside track as to what they are doing over there.

Here in the US, Audio Note transformers are well regarded but super expensive, like double or triple the price of Tamura or Tango!

Inquiring minds want to know.

I think Neil, the chap there who now makes the cartridges, winds the top of the range ones. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Andy Groves who comes up with the spec though.

If you have the machinery, which is akin to a lathe, winding transformers is a one man job. The design is the tricky part.

And many car companies started off by one man making a car just as many audio companies started by one man designing and making some hifi and many current, established boutique hifi companies are still just a few people making things themselves and so charge for that in itself..

Not everything in the world is out-sourced and mass-manufactured and the fact that it is not is many Hi-End Hifi manufacturer's only USP.. (well they claim it's good sound too :) )

Winding your own is more common than you may think. I used to make them when I worked for a large international railway equipment company. We made ours on hand winders. All custom designed and made to exacting standards...+- 0 turns. These were fairly small...maybe up to about a 3" cube.

Always fancied winding my own but don't know where to start with the design..
