Minidisk query

Hello all.
I have a choice to buy a sony mds-je330.or a pioneer MJD-508 deck
can anyone advice me which is the best deck please?

Hi Ron, i'm going to apologise now because as far as i know there is only one decent Minidisc player/recorder & for the life of me i can't remember the model number :doh:

I'm pretty sure it's a Sony & it uses a great codec called ATRAC type "R".


Ok so you may be interested in minidisc but i feel sure you could find a decent CD recorder for about the same money secondhand, so have you considered this or am i barking at the wrong tree :scratch:

Sorry i can't help, maybe others can ;) Like i say though, if you are using it for recording purposes a CD recorder would be a better bet :)

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I use a Denon DMD1000

All great machines, I just find the lp mode of the sony machines handy for recording classical concerts such as the proms etc.

Also have a pioneer 707 machine, great but only single speed.

The HD minidisk units are very good and great that they can record uncompressed.

They only imported portable units over here as I understand but the lower models can be found relatively cheaply. A friend did actually find a top of the range sony mz rh1 in cash convertors for £20 that just needed some gaffer tape in the right place over the battery compartment (dodgy connection) but the dope returned it.. because he didn't know how to use it. Annoying cos he originally said he'd sell it to me instead of bothering to go back.

MZ NH600 (the lowest recording model) is nearer £20 on ebay.

Only difficulty with them is getting the recordings off the HD discs to your computer is limited by the software provided and can be slow because it get converted on the fly to .wav as .wav isn't what it actually records as on the disc. Still, you can just record compressed ALTRAC as per normal and use them in any minidisk machine.
