Copland 288 Teac Mech Gear Tooth Broken :(

My Copland 288 has started to make a rattling noise on opening and closing the drawer and track changes. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif Only just bought it 2nd hand as well. Gutted.

It looks like the lower gear which drives the laser back and forward has lost a tooth on the small part that drives the top gear but what is this lower gear called, A,B or 2 Step ?

I think mech is the CMK-4

I'm confused by the part identification
The other top gear looks newish. Bottom gear is very yellow.

Do I need to take the whole mech out to replace it ?

I have asked over on diyaudio so hopefully someone can help but I don't have a service manual and had no luck getting any reply from the useless bunch at Absolute sounds who are the dealers for this player originally.

Hi Dave,try Charles Hyde.Seems this is a common fault,also seen this mech described as teac.Have seen some similar gears in maplins model section,dont know if they would be any use.Dave.

Yes, already found that site with 3 gears for sale called A,B and 2 Step. The 2 step gear is £44 !! Scandalous price but teac have recently put the price up of all the spare parts from what I have read !!

I hope it is the cheaper B gear at £11 as the 2 step one is for the tray I think which works ok. Just the laser movement back and forward is rattly and I can see a broken tooth on the bottom gear, it would be the hardest to get at....

Wish I had a service manual or at least one for this mech... It is the same as used in Krell players.

I have a real dislike for Absolute Sounds... appalling service. I would happy pay for a service manual but I guess they just want to shaft anyone for what price they can as you know re logans.

I'd drop a PM to Mark at Audiocom. If there's an easy/cheap why to fix your problem, Mark may well know.

SOME Teac drives were inverted Sony's with fancy trim hiding the fact that the mech was Sony's cheap one. may be worth checking on yours. I can't remember how different the VRDS10/T1 machine is, but with a few mods regarding disc support, the mech under the plastic mouldings was pure Sony... Wadia used them too apparently.

I think I read on diy hifi last night that the manual is available on the net for nowt,could have been the krell one but transport may be same.The guy said the gears are available from Krell.You know my views regarding[ as ]they tried to shaft me witrh the logan panels,well they probably did in the end.Dave.

£20 with vat and post for a tiny bit of plastic !!

Yes, I read that some teac mechs are just upside down Sony but finding the right gear would still be a problem unless you know what the original Sony part number is or what sony mech the cmk-4 is based on.

Whatever you think of my attitude towards the mech itself after the lampizator "revelations," I loved the sound of the 288 player and it was one which I could have happily lived with if I didn't have mine. Comments in UK reviews regarding its fruity sound were mispaced I felt, as the extra bass weight over typical Jap players (and Coplands own 266) is what's often missing from CD in general..

Yes, agree re copland's. I used to have a 289 and when the mech failed on that I had an hell of a time getting a repair under warranty by absolute sounds. It went back 3 times in a few months. Eventually after it was fixed correctly I traded it.

I bought this 288 by chance 3rd hand. It has the 4 bur brown pcm63k DAC's like the 289, very good DAC. Really do not want to get rid of it and would happily make this my last ever CD player as long as parts are still available and I can fix it. I am not well up on digital stuff.

I've just had the 2 step gear in my VRDS 9 crumble on me. Forty odd quid for a replacement is a bit steep, especially when it only cost me a hundred in the first place.
On the other hand I've just spent ages researching a new o/p stage and where else could I get a cdp for forty odd quid.
I'm just going to have to play vinyl for a bit until I get the part. Ah well.
The Copland is a mighty fine player. I used to have one a few years back. The Wadia I got only just beat it.
