View Full Version : Shorter speaker stands?

My atacama se24's are 24" tall ... I have modern low seated sofas, so to get the tweeter at ear height they could really do with being 5-6" shorter ... Also Hannah doesn't like these ones she says they are ugly ... So maybe something prettier if there is such a thing...
They could also do with having a slightly larger platform as the speakers are a little big for these
Any ideas?

I have these filled with very fine lead shot and white sand 50/50 mix.
I seem to remeber no.12 shot 4x 25lb. bags and a 5 U.S. gallon bucket of white sand from White Sands New Mexico.
fill it a little, tamp it a few times fill a little more till full, then go back a weeks later and fill it agein as sometimes sand and shot continue to settle for at least a week.

The shot and sand really bring out the bass and deepens the over all tone.
Flip the speakers upside down, you may very well like them better.

'SE24' Ugly! i always thought thought they were loverly, i remember buying a pair when they first came out & was very impressed with the quality.. Try some new Atacamas..the ones i recommended to Marco bought for his Celestions should be the ticket..'SL400' or 'SL500'... Both have 225mm Sq top plates.

Hamish, these may be a little too short for you, and not pretty enough, but I still have these .. http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7291&highlight=stands

Maybe with spikes, and placed on some granite chopping boards from asda they might be just the right height! ;)

Give Peter at HNE Systems a buzz - he'll make you something from granite, any size you like.

Ok more info

Top and bottom plate needs to be max 18cm wide and 24cm deep ... This will be the right size for the speaker and my granite plinths

I'll look into custom builds if nothing comes up...

I am puzzled with the ugly bit as you were wanting one of the most pig ugly turntables in existence awhile back :lolsign: Anyway do you have a correct height in mind taking into account the spikes & granite plinths?

The Vinyl Adventure
22-11-2010, 20:14
No, height including just the stand it's self

That turntable was a work of art my friend, you wait til you see my new one ...

Our living room has lots of bright colours and Hannah chose the colour ... Hannah wants gloss black stands ... I get new thongs as kong as try look within a certain spec of Hannahs colours for the living room

Hamish what about a nice pair of highly polish milk churns. You can do all sort with em

It's good to know I can always turn to this forum for sensible and constructive advice ...

How about some custom build from black granite etc, nice and shiny to match the speakers?

Only needs a base, an upright like a 'T shape or 'V' shape and a top, all glued together, should last for at least a million years and you wont be selling those speakers anytime soon.

Might be a bit expensive unless you know anyone that works with granite etc.

Mark.

OK, its already been suggested :)

Something like this but made to fit the speakers perfectly:

http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread.php?29735-Interest-Check-HNE-Granite-Stands-for-B-amp-W-805

All it neeeds is a simple 'T' shape for the upright, flat part of the 'T' at the front with the 'I' at the back out of sight. maybe rounded off a bit but the rounding off is expensive as it takes ages.
I do know someone who does this kind of work, I could ask if you design it :)

As it goes I do know a person who runs a granite cutting place, although they do mostly table tops and work tops ... On the basis of 2 recommendations along these lines, I think I'll look into it ...

Mark Grant

Something like that would be made from off cuts or damaged worktops etc that have been rejected.

A frend recently had a TV stand made that is a copy of an Ikea design, but instead of Ikea cardboard it is slabs of white marble bonded together, looks great.:)

Looks a bit like this but with two shelves:
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00105323

Took 4 people to carry it in

What does he do with the bits he cuts out for the sink holes Hamish? - sounds like he's yer man!
You could do the whole thing with a few of those, if you built up the uprights into a box shaped x-section from strips cut from a sink sized piece - you can get some incredible glues nowadays - you need never know the pillars were hollow (forming cable channels).......

Black, glossy and substantial seems to be the order of the day Andre...

That sounds like a very good idea Chris ...
I have just looked at thier web site and it looks like they do sorta speckly black that would suit Hannah ... http://www.hnd-uk.com/finishes.php

Looks like the thing to me mate!
I think my HNE Systems stuff is the Star Galaxy - the flecking is kind of gold but very, very subtle.

That's the one I was looking at ... I'll give em a ring tomorrow ... Any idea what I should expect to pay .... Or might it just depend on how much they like me ...
How might I spec it ... Just give them an idea of dimensions and a bit of a description or do you think I'd need to draw something?

I've been through loads of supplies not been happy with any, i can link you to a company i ended up with. Everything is machine cut, machine polished & machine edged (Very important to me)..I had my shelves made from 'Black Zimbabwe' granite, loverly, perfection.

Thats one of em

I like the highly polished milk churns. Looks like you could take a wizz in one if you got caught short,
not many commercial speaker stands offer that convenience nowadays.

Got some gloss black sound organisation stands ... Only a little shorter ... But the new layout doesn't permit any shorter ...
Loads more stable though and a hit with Hannah - surprisingly really as I didn't think she would like them...
