Having gone iMac, I don't use CDs that much. Sold my Geoff Bull modded Marantz CD80 to a fan (of Marantz, not me!)
Here's my amusing alternative.
Very nice modded PS1. Don't ask what, exactly, unless you can translate german. It came from there!

Sounds pretty good. A lot of stuff done to it; even custom paint!
Obviously upgrade on power conditioning.
It was a bit of a joke for me too in a way. I like having 'unique' stuff (Modded etc)
I tried to roughly translate the german, but forget the details...there were a LOT!
But sound/music wise, it's excellent. Good analogue for want of better words.

was it expensive?
there is a bunch of stuff here on modding them http://dogbreath.de/PS1/index.html
i bought a scph1001 off ebay for £3 after deciding based on the tutiorial on that site that even i was capable if following the instructions... i havent got round to it as i dont really use cd's (and if im honest i really just wanted to play old games :) )
will give it a go one day though

Expensive? Yes in one way.(£180)
I had tried an un-modded PS1 (the one with phono output.) and liked it well enough.
(Anyone want it?)
Just fancied this for its 'Wow factor" (oh how I hate that phrase!) It's had a serious make-over and I know at least 2 people who want it!
My soldering days are a long way back, plus I don't really know enough. Can follow 'Heathkit'-type instructions!
I was aware of the various sites.
Am going to have a listen RIGHT NOW to remind myself! Usually it sits a bit forlorn while I listen to 'Shuffleplay' on iMac!

I have heard a modded PS1 and honestly it could hold it's head high in much more highly thought of company. It must be an age thing but lately I find myself enjoying music instead of chasing the latest upgrade! that plus I am skint lol.

You can chuck it my way if you like, I am going to get round to seeing if I can mod one... Really just to see how competent I can be at that sort of thing if I put my mind to it ... And the ps1 is cheap enough not to worry about if I break it... How much you want for it?
Let us know how you get on with the sound :)

These quotes of beating 6 grand cd players always seemed (without hearing one much) a bit sensationalist to me... You must be happy with the bantam then :)

Agree totally! With both concepts. (Apart from it being age related.....though that too probably!)
I have nothing (but Imac/MHDT Havana) to compare the PS with but on todays listening-more tonight as I'll have house to myself! - it has great separation, good tone, bass is fine, imagery lovely.....
Marcus Miller soon...

Got into them when Jeff Day used one on 6 Moons a few years back. (can't find the ref)
Like the idea of modding something vaguely abstract like this.
But then, so are a few people on here!
Amuses people to see it too!
There is something about it,like an 8 second volkswagon bug in the 1/4 mile.
You just have to tip your hat to the builder...
Nothing the Germans do suprises me at all.
They are brillant prefectionists, and mabey even madder than me!
