View Full Version : Emergency sound proofing!
Next door to my basement flat there is a small cafe kitchen/cold room and the last couple of days the guys fridge has gone wrong and its making a rackit. He has no plans to do anything about it.
I have to sound proof the wall quick or im going to lose my sanity and access to my listening room.
Any ideas on cheap soundproofing ? I dont care how ugly it is:(

Call the council environmental health department :) If it's a basement flat as you say then you need to use the room, if he or his equipment is causing a noise nuisance then the council will tell him to fix it pronto.
Why the hell should you pay out money when this knobber next door is causing the problem? Stuff that :ner:
Even without the fridge problem he has a customer toilet down there and i can here the women piddling after their buy one get one free cocktails
Im looking at the rockwool Andres talking about. For 15 m2 the cheapest ive found is £200. Abet builders get a better price.

I'd suggest you take a look at Wickes prices online Colin ;) They do thick rockwool insulation at decent prices, i guess you'll need wood battens & some kind of wood sheeting to cover it all up as well
I can understand why you'd like to sort it now, last thing i'd want to listen to is a load of 3005

Seriously though, if its a commercial premesis, get on to the council.

I could build the web site for you...
Back to the real world ... An anonymous call the the HSE saying you and your family ate there and you saw kitchen staff with no hats, someone serving food with a plaster that wasn't blue, someone cleaning forks with the same cloth they wiped the table, an open bottle of "R9" within in reach of a child in the public area of the cafe, greasy streaks along the skirting boards (a possible sign of rats) and you were generally unimpressed with the cleanliness ... Nothing to serious, nothing that would be obviously a lie ... But it would get them a surprise inspection and if the fridge is makin noises it's probably not running efficiently.... The HSE will check the temp and heypresto they have to sort it...
Of course that's a little malicious, and you might feel a little guilty if they got shut down for other reasons ... But think of it this way, you might have saved someone from serious food poisoning ;)

Get someone to distract the owner while you sneak in the back and 'disable' the troublesome 'fridge. He will think it has finally packed in and will have to get a new one.
Or
Borrow some PA speakers and wack up the system real loud with something tasteless and/or offensive playing on repeat - I'm thinking something along the lines of Bobby Brown by Zappa but I'm sure we could all come up with some great stuff. From 10 am to 10 pm for a couple of days. Then go back to him and see if now he wants to cut a deal:)

Drill a spy hole and insert one of those one way viewers they have on front doors, also arrange a mysterious knocking noise from your side everytime someone takes a pissdley on the other side, it would scare me off the seat
Seriously, its an expensive job sound proofing and to do the job properly you would have to build a subwall with an air gap and even this is no guarantee, also there is the subject of accompanying vibration from the fridge freezer... have you ever heard a washing machine tumble dryer combo go?!
Write to the guy and politely and ask him to fix the problem, failing which you will get the Council officer involved, also mentioned noise from the loo... your party wall must be thin? Keeping records of your problem is essential!
As an aside, thirty years ago I lined my party walls (terrace house) with industrial synthetic lead and acoustic foam bonded sheeting (I" thick), heavy stuff, and then heavy panelled over this, I was able to do this then because I was in engineering and the materials cost me next to nothing and I did the work myself... but thats not helping you out. There's really no way you are going to do the job of sound and vibration cancellation without spending lots of money, is it worth it? Speak to the guy again and be firm, very firm about the conseqence of his in-action.

There is always the more direct approach, often underated imo; chin the tosser
4 X8 foot sheets of 2 inch foam board and 4x8 sheets of 3/4 MDF and some 1 inch square cut strips of doug furr wood.
First nail up verticly and 8 foot 1inch strip of doug furr strip every 2 feet then use liquid nails in the big caulking tube to glue the foam in place leaveing an inch of air space between the wall and the foam. Then useing long nails nail the MDF into the one inch strips of doug furr and also use liguid nails to help hold it to the foam.
problem solved or at least greatly reduced.
Other answer: 1000watt rms 18 inch JBL subwoofer playing PIL limited second edition all night long.
Or boar a hole in the wall and release the rats!
At the risk of being a BOF don't get into a spat with a man who's only got a knackered fridge to loose, whereas you could have all your kit confiscated if it turns nasty... I've had several spats with an ex neighbour and it never ends well.
Rockwool can be quite useful if you're willing to spend a bit...

How about making a recording of a noisy fridge & playing it through at a rather 'robust' volume?
