Do they annoy you, are they just noise, trite, pathetic, do the lyrics get on your nerves, are the artists talentless idiots or what?

6 of the "best" from me...

Savage Garden: "Affirmation" - a trite, pointless and boring list with nothing in the music to give it a lift.

Cat Stevens: "Days of the Old School Yard" - any song with the lines "When we had simplicity/And when we had warm toast for tea" should have been consigned to the bin before it was unleashed on an unsuspecting public.

Genesis: "Whodunnit" - OK, Abacab wasn't the best of their albums, but this was the pits. Was it you or was it me/Or was it he or she/Was it A or was it B/Or was it X or Zee?" TBH, lads, I couldn't give a pair of fettered dingo's kidneys.

Reel 2 Real: "I like to move it" - Really? Well why not take this rubbish with you when you do? This gets on my nerves SO MUCH and not only because my daughters form time-to-time sing it incessantly.

Chris de Burgh: "A Spaceman Came Travelling" - Tell me Chris, why would he come so far just to sing "Da--da--da--daa-da-da-daa-daa-daaaa." Please no more.....

And while we're on Christmas hits:
Kirsty McColl/The Pogues: "Fairy tale of New York." - Sorry guys, this has all the garbage in it that makes my beloved folk music reviled throughout the world: Inverted-snobby pretentiousness that oozes from every groaned syllable. Absolutely awful.

Personally, though, there is very little that I would say I can't stand, with the possible exception of James Blunt - I don't know why, but I just hate his stuff with a passion, and he annoys the tits off me whenever I've seen him in interviews...

Oh yes, stock platter, of course - and the MN one will be what the Oyaide is up against. I should have Mike's platter soon, as it's now left Sydney with an estimated delivery date of Nov 29 (Monday) by 6:00 PM :)

The interesting thing though (although not for one's wallet) is that the Oyaide sounds even better with the copper mat underneath, which augurs well for the arrival of the MN platter with the copper mat bonded on top.....

What I'm getting at, of course, is that I *suspect* that the ultimate combo will be MN platter + Oyaide mat and record weight! :doh:

Superb as the Achromat is, the Oyaide leaves it for dead, as I suppose it should, given the huge difference in cost. I'd say that the Achromat is king of the 'affordable' mats, but the copper mat and Oyaide lead the field in the 'hi-end' mat stakes.

The way, Martin, that the combo of the Oyaide mat and weight flattens out any warps in records, allowing the headshell and cartridge to hardly move one iota when a record is playing, with the resultant huge sonic improvement, I'm afraid is a no-brainer!

I've already tested the Oyaide weight against the Bruil, and it's no contest in favour of the former. I can go into more detail if you wish on a separate thread.

Thankfully, my wife's an exception to the rule in that respect (as I'm sure are those of some other folk here), but in general, most women seem to be into the most diabolically simplistic puke-inducing mainstream pap imaginable.........

Anyone got a theory for this?

I'm sure that a good deal of them are wondering why we listen to what we do, put it down to upbringing & hormones as well as women tend to be more emotional (or at least show it) :scratch:

Girls are brought up playing with dolls & boys with meccano, i think that just about sums it up :lolsign:

I went to see The Musical Box ( a Genesis tribute band) asked the wife to come and she replied would come with me to see a Bay City Rollers tribute band.
Sort of put things in perspective.

I don't want to tar all females with the same brush, as I know a few with decent music tastes, but for the vast majority, it seems to be 'if you can dance to it' is virtually the sole criterion for what is considered by them as 'good'.

Soulless cardboard chart pap is therefore usually the order of the day.

I'm sure there are blokes out there with bloody awful taste as well, i'm just glad i don't know any :eyebrows:

As you get older i find that you tend to gravitate towards people with similar tastes in all sorts of things & not just music. Tbh i don't actually associate with anyone i went to school with, no emails, no facebook, nothing. I'm not interested :)

I agree with what you're saying, but what would be interesting is asking the good people here (generally folk with decent taste in music) what their wife's or partner's music collection is like.....

I went to Hawkwind last night and it was 95% male audience. I was surprised
im sure they had lots of girls in the free party days.
But then thats one of the big differences i think with men and woman. They listen to music for the party , they dont stand and really listen to the music.

And I suspect she's far from alone. I think there's something fundamental and deep-rooted about this in terms of the female psyche :)

The other thing I've found is that (again in general) women listen to lyrics much more than we do. I'm into tunes, rhythms and melodies - that is what makes me 'connect' with my favourite music. I couldn't tell you what the hell the words are on some of my fav songs!

Also, (again in general) women tend to listen to music whilst doing something else. It's more of a background thing for them. Very, very few, in my experience, will sit for hours on end and listen to music whilst doing nothing else, like we often do.

I find the psychology of all this quite intriguing........

There seems to be a link between attention span - concentration if you like - and musical complexity. For instance, I don't know a single woman who likes Portishead or Shostakovich. What they have in common, together with more testing literature, is the need to listen more than once and concentrate. Such music is utterly rewarding to those of us who try, banal noise to those who don't.

That's interesting - I'm the same - I'd much rather read the lyrics to understand the song, but I rarely take notice of the actual words when listening to music, unless it is something blindingly obvious. I thought I was alone in this, so be interesting to see if Marco and I are just freaks or if there are more of us... :eyebrows:

Good point, Martin, and I concur. Portishead are ok, but Shostakovich is by far my favourite classical composer - I simply love how dark and brooding his stuff is!

Yes, me too. I am too rapt in the sound they are making. I happen to love choral music, mostly sung in Latin or Italian, and the words are immaterial (and incomprehensible) to me. In fact, when choral music is sung in English I find it a distraction.

Some comments about Kansas, Styx and Journey being crap......we will have to agree to differ but I think these three bands have produced some incredible music over the years. I do dislike Babe/and Mr Roboto by Styx though with a passion.

Alan Holdsworth I agree with John, Secrets is awesome....the rest is very hard going.

I don't rate the Beatles or the Stones :sofa:

Many punk groups modelled themselves on Hawkwind.....a bunch of crusty old hippies.....who I also like. Hawkwind are a prog, space rock group so its a bit ironic punks were rebelling against prog to use a prog band as a role model/ influence.

I absolutely agree, same attitude and ethos, and probably the same squats, for me Motorhead were probably more 'punk' than most so called UK 'punk' fashion bands...

In fact there's loads of great 'prog' music around at the moment, it's just labelled 'post rock', but that's just a re branding exercise.

I like good prog, rock, punk, new wave, funk, classical, jazz, reggae, blues, hip hop etc....But not 'Pomp'!

But that's just me now...

However I must confess to having owned albums by Styx, Kansas, and Toto, but they were sold in the big Stalinist purge of 1979, along with Kiss & Judas Priest too...What was I thinking of;)

Depends how you look at it, if you dismiss the proto punk stage i'd say punk lasted around 1-2 year in the UK..The great thing about punk was it got rid of the remaining prog shyte that were doing nothing but make themselves look birks & had been doing for a few years..imho there was a wide space of wasted talent in the form of nothingness between 1973 - 1976

I have guilty pleasures in Nightranger's "Sister Christian" and Boston's first album. There's no reason for it, the maths don't add up and it defies the law of physics :scratch: I normally cringe at that Journey-Bon Jovi-REO Wimpwagon landfill with all the rage that a lifetime of worshipping Killing Joke can create in a man.

Maybe one day scientists will discover some neuron or synapse that becomes receptive to AOR after too many years of IPA...

I honestly thought I was still asleep and having a nightmare.

"Dancing " by the scissor sisters. The fact that I've invariable heared it over the work pa doesn't help matters but it just sounds like two cats fighting to me.

Just before xmas, again working at a machine, they were playing something modern but in the buck fizz mould ......it just gave /gives music bad name. Not sure what it was. I just wanted to forget about that 5 minutes of my life.
