View Full Version : Scalford show 6th March 2011
I would be really interested in hearing Alex (UK) opinion of the systems he listened to, particularly with regard to system cost v performance.
Hi John - gosh, :o in addition to my post above? (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=194202&postcount=214)
I might be able to expand a bit, but it will have to wait until a bit later as currently "engrossed" in Peppa Pig with Avatar on my knee! One thing I will say though, is that having listened to a large variety of kit, I don't necessarily think expensive is automatically better, and nor is new... I also felt that some of the best sounding systems were the simplest - in the case of Jerry's system which I offered as being my favourite, an all in one CD player, and an old DD turntable, an integrated amp with built in phono stage, (although both the CDP and Amp are very good quality of course) and a pair of speakers - an interconnect and speaker cables (not even equipment stands from memory) and a very pleasing result. That's not to say that a pre-power combo, a DAC, or separate phono stage is a no-no, but I do wonder if (particularly in an unknown room) "Keep it Simple, Stupid" is the best approach?

Hopefully there are 147 pictures on the end of this link (http://s939.photobucket.com/albums/ad240/speakermark/Scalford%202011/) :eyebrows:
It certainly looks like it works ;) Please let me know if it doesn't...
Marco, you'll find the pics of AoS kit on page 8 :)
Yup, we'd love to do the curry thing :)
Hopefully it will be possible next year with using Martin's amps and T/T, as if I don't have to humph as much gear, then I can leave home earlier and of course arrive at the hotel earlier in time for munchies.... ;)
Ideally next year the only thing I'll be bringing are the Celestions and some music!
Marco.

Oh yes, we had an all you can eat buffet and taxi for £20 a head. Top banana.
Thats what this smiley was made for :carrot:
(Actually it's a carrot, but nevermind!)
3901 Does that help Nick? :D

Churz, dude - thanks for that :)
Still waiting on your feedback, though, which I'd appreciate - see post #240

“Hi John - gosh, in addition to my post above?”
Yes mate, please, in your own time and Avatar permitting of course ;)
While its cool to see all the pics and hear everyone had a good time and AoS did themselves proud etc, a slightly, erm, less passionate and relevant to the “average” person interested in how stuff sounded to someone a bit less caught up in the hobby would be cool.
No pressure mind :lolsign:

Ah, ok, you want a "warts and all" opinion from a complete amateur! I can probably manage that (to a degree!) - laters! ;)
Thanks for the link now working

I just loved that system in pic 127. Best sound of all IOM;)
The acoustics in that room seriously sucked. It sounded best with 6 people stood at the back. Couldn't fit any more in.

Sorry Marco, i missed that post
The show was superb :) Now i have been to hifi shows before but i was a kid & went with my parents. I remember wandering round looking at all sorts of exotic gear including Optonica, Revox etc etc but a show like this is a totally different atmosphere entirely. Even though i was probably only 10 years old, though i honestly cannot remember how old i was as i can't remember where i was (might have been Bournemouth way) i still can't forget the kind of atmosphere that was prevalent, it was all about selling stuff & advertising
Scalford is a totally different kettle of fish, it's simply about getting to have a listen to kit you'd probably never get exposed to with nothing really to do with sales or promotions. It's about fellow music enthusiasts coming together with their respective kit & enjoying themselves in the process :) I had a great time, thoroughly enjoyed it & opened my ears to some vastly different kit.
Had a fun time with Alex who i'm very pleased to have met, likewise with the rest of the AoS crew even if i really didn't get very much of a chance to have more than a fleeting conversation which was unfortunate. I guess you got to see as many systems as i had minutes to chat to AoS members :D
As for the AoS system, lets just say that after about midday it rocked ;) I thought i was hearing a very slight edge in the treble first thing, almost like there was a tiny bit of crap on the SPU tip. However on later listening it was totally fluid & sounded absolutely fantastic. It was a bit of a revelation to hear vinyl with such a low & consistant background noise, i can see why RCMs are popular & of course the obligatory make-up brush :D No - it truly did work, unfortunately i have so little vinyl it just wouldn't be worth the investment :( Nicks Nagra was frankly stunning & when it was first played which would have been early on i immediately nodded my head & thought "that's it"! This would have been mitigated later though as the Techie & SPU sounded wonderful..
The Ditton 66 frankly sounded huge which was a bit of a shock due to the room size, they still filled it though & did a superb job! By the way, i should have got you to play track 1 of that CD i brought along  I think as me & Alex discussed though i think you'd have had a slightly better sound if the 66s had been moved in towards the equipment by about a foot or so. This would have given a better image on the front row seating whilst still accomodating those standing behind the rear seating... Just imo of course..
Other than that, top notch & yes 40W of class A valve amp does indeed go very loud :eyebrows: A normal front room would be a quarter of the volume so i think that just about says it all ;)
Brilliant day & i can't wait for Scalford 2012 in all honesty! A pleasure to put faces to names of all the AoS members i knowingly met..
I totally agree about the vibe its about people sharing their passion and gives you a flavour of the different approaches towars sound and a chance to hear stuff yo would never get a chance to hear When I went into peoples rooms I was greated with geniune warmth
Great day, only visited a few rooms on purpose as I tend to get a bit blaise about kit and not give it the attention it deserves. Did go to AOS room twice , as Alex says hard to chat to people given we are all listening. Fabulous speakers Marco, possibly stole the show with them, reel to reel, wow this might start a new fad for people it was that good.

It's lovely reading such positive comments about the Nagra. Thank you to everyone who's mentioned it! It's a good job I already have one, because if what you say comes true Barry, they'll end up too expensive for me to even sniff one!
Hi again,
Well Mark has said a lot of what I was going to say about the AoS room. It wasn't us colluding - we both felt independently that there wasn't something quite right on the first visit with the vinyl replay. I can't remember what the record was that was playing, but it didn't sound quite right. The further visits proved that any fear was unfounded, as it was definitely a one off - either a dodgy record or recording, (most likely, I suspect) or possibly a bit of fluff or gunk on the stylus? Certainly when the Nagra kicked in, I was stunned at how good it sounded - (Pink Floyd I think it was) - and on our second visit Marco played Howard Jones - What is Love? (a track I know intimately) and thank goodness it sounded absolutely sublime, as did anything else I heard on the Techie. Steve's Eikos is certainly a fab CD player too, although I think I only heard 3 tracks on it at the end, and by then my ears were giving up and wanting to go home - certainly after Nick's final selection!
Regarding speaker placement, I did comment to Mark as he has suggested that I felt they were just a little too wide - actually, not so much they were too wide, but that the room was not wide enough for them! I can see that the compromise was probably to keep them away from the electronics to avoid (well minimise!) vibrations, but I felt that the image would have benefited from having some more clearance on the extremities, allowing it to extend beyond the speakers more than was possible as they were. Of course, I'm in no position really to judge from experience, it was just my instinct. That said, the slam, punch and scale of the system was awesome. I've read on here before that if you hear a system from outside the room and it sounds "right" then it probably is - mind you, I could still hear the AoS system even when we were in OB1's room and he was playing Marilyn Manson at silly levels through his Amatis!
I'll return with some more show thoughts in a while... Unless I'm already behind John's sofa after this post - hope you didn't eat all the custard creams, John?! :D

What a great week-end that was!
Firstly apologies to Marco for not making it back with my SPU as I said I would! I wanted to hear it on the techie along side your SPU just for a comparison & a quick test of your SPU SUT. Time just slipped away far to quickly! I'm quite disappointed I didn't make it as the Techie was sounding the best I've heard it! New platter, PSU & cart have certainly stepped up the game! It would of given me an idea where my Denon would fit in too. Oh well I intend to take it next year!
I only managed two brief listens to the AoS system, but must say it was sounding very very good & as noted earlier, it has come in for a fair amount of praise on the Wam & around the forums! Well Done Chaps!
The Dittons were sounding very good indeed, & you have to wonder what speaker companies have been doing all these years? The copper amp certainly got a good grip of the Dittons, N.W.A was sounding very good & that was from outside the building while I was having a smoke! Steve's CDP likewise was sounding good, But to my dissapointment I didn't get to hear the Nagra Beechy!
All in all I think the show was again an improvement over previous years & all the systems I heard had something good going for them perhaps not always my thing but I could appreciate what they were trying to achieve, but it's just impossible to see everthing on show as hard as you try!
Noel Keywood from HiFi World seemed to enjoy it too http://www.hi-fiworld.co.uk/
attendance was well up on last year & with this sort of exposure the show should grow even more & go from strength to strength!
As Jack (Bigdur) said you should try & make the curry/beer run next year. There was 49 exhibitors & helpers on it this year! We took over the whole curry house apart from a small area & were well looked after.Perhaps if you intend to try the curry run do your best to get there for set-up a bit earlier next time. I believe some exhibitors arrived around lunch time or just after & the hotel welcomed them to set-up early where they could. This also allows the exhibitors to check out each others systems on the saturday making it not such a rush on the day itself to try & take in a few rooms.
Ive got quite a few photo's would you like to see them all or just the AoS ones?
Great day out i really enjoyed meeting everyone, you know who you are ;), loved our room and kept sneaking back, some rooms i stuck my head through the door and had to make a hasty exit either dull as dishwater or fingernails on the blackboard stuff, i was really pleased to of at last litened to a mini T amp through Tannoys and swiftly bought one to play with there and then using my phone to do so, i love technology sometimes, nice to reminisce over the rooms with the Quad stats, the jury is still out on horns, i love what they do well but not sure if could live with them full time, Bigdurs were a nice though.
It was really nice to see some good old kit doing good and out performing modern day show and shine stuff, really pissed off i missed Nicks Nagra.
One bad comment i must make was the lack of food on site, only having sandwiches is just not good enough IMO, we ended up driving back into Melton and having Shepherds pie and a pudding the bonus of that was it only cost a fiver each in the Co-op cafe,
my brain is dead and i can't think of anymore to say at the moment, i'm to knackered after a long week and to many miles driven so i'm off to bed :goodnight:
Looking forward to next year already

Some more musings from Scalford...
Rather than "dis" anyone's system, (to be honest, they were all good in their own ways - there wasn't a system that I thought "yuck" - even though some were more to my taste than others) I think it might be appropriate to make some general observations.
As mentioned earlier, I have very limited experience of other people's systems, so the show was a real eye-opener for me, and not necessarily in the way I expected!
First off, one of the biggest things I noticed is that more than anything, the law of diminishing returns kicks in big time with hifi! I must admit, I now struggle even more than I did, with the "night and day" type of observations I often read. Unless of course I am completely deaf, or don't know how to listen properly, or possibly both!
Putting this into context, I can quite easily tell that there is a massive difference between a Matsui midi system and a "proper" hifi separates system, but once you've got a pretty well sorted set up, the jumps in sound quality are nowhere near as big as I imagined. I came away from the show thinking how rubbish my own kit must be, but actually, after listening to it all day today, it isn't completely blown away by every system out there. (Even less so hopefully after Friday when I collect my Spendors, but I digress...)
To me, putting together an appropriate system is far more important than just waving your credit card at it. What I think I am trying to say is that overall, musicality is the key - I guess it is a bit like a range of cars - sure, a BMW 7 series is going to be bigger and quicker and more luxurious than a BMW 1 series, but at the end of the day, if you live in a city centre and never go very far, a 7 Series isn't going to best suit your needs, whereas if all you ever do is motorway miles, you'll be less comfortable in a 1 Series. In other words, the first and biggest factor on your choice of kit is the environment it is in - you may decide you like BMW, but getting the one to suit your needs is paramount.
An interesting thing is this: I, and a lot of other people who have commented on the various systems both here and on the other forums, have mentioned systems only by referring to the speakers! I didn't realise until I thought about it and looked back - but most people see the speakers as the system - or at least that's the thing they remember... (Maybe that answers Alex (Magiccarpetride's) "What first?" question...?)
Generally, then, if I am to carry on with my own theory and line of enquiry, I was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed the systems with small speakers. The compromise is that you lose bass and to a lesser degree, scale, however, based on the small speakers I heard, the benefit is that you get a better image - certainly I now understand what people mean by "3D" or "holographic" particularly after hearing the little Harbeths, JR149's and tiny PMCs, the Royd Merlins, ProAc Response, and AVI's - all 6 of these systems were very involving, and intimate, and would probably suit me, playing music at real-world volumes, in a relatively small room.
However, you just can't beat shifting air for real impact, can you? The AoS room proved that! But for me, in my circumstances, the 66's would be completely inappropriate.
I think I also know now what people refer to as a "hifi sound" - and whilst being mindful of my aim of not "dissing" anyone's system, I would have said that overall, the systems based on new or very expensive equipment fell into that category. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but there just doesn't seem to be the soul there. Maybe a bit of a generalisation, but could also be what Marco has often referred to about how modern speakers and components are voiced - overly analytical, and tries too hard to chop the music up, rather than let the whole experience envelope the listener?
Overall, though, I think the one area where I personally could now put my finger on as being aspirational is "clarity" - the systems that I enjoyed most, were the ones where (compared to my own system at least) - (another hifi cliché warning... :)) the grain was stripped away. I think this is why the system Jerry had completely hit the spot for me, it was like looking through a window that is so clean, you're not even sure if there is glass in the window - it just allows the music to come through in all its glory, filling every corner of your field of "view" and with an intensity that just gives you the performance of the recording in all it's honesty, adding nothing, and taking nothing away.
I guess I must not forget to mention File Based Audio as this whole post has been at the request of one of its biggest exponents... :) (Although you may have wanted me to be more specific, John? Give me another half an hour and another glass of Rioja and I might!) Well, not just because it is John, but I must say, I was very impressed with the systems fronted with FBA. That isn't to say they were better than CD or Vinyl - as always, implementation is the key, but I will definitely be investigating lossless and Hi-Res options shortly - so far my computer audio has been completely convenience orientated, but after hearing some of them at the weekend I definitely need to explore it further. That said, the Garrard 401 project definitely needs to get an elevated position on the "to do" list - the show proved beyond all reasonable doubt that whilst computer audio may well be the way forward, analogue is not going to give up without a fight, in the sound quality stakes at least!
Apologies for the essay, I hope if you've got this far that it was worth bothering with! :)

Totally agree, and it's that which makes Scalford Hall *the* show to go to for all genuine audio enthusiasts, reducing the commercial shows promoting the industry into almost an insignificance.
After crap like the recent Bristol show, I think it puts things into perspective, especially considering the high standard of sound produced in most rooms by so-called 'amateurs' with mostly very modest equipment....
I'm afraid that dealers and members of the industry can no longer use the excuse of 'bad rooms' for the poor sound often heard with their (sometimes) ridiculously priced kit. So to certain members of the trade I say: wise-up guys and raise your game, before you lose the punters you've got left! ;)
Had a fun time with Alex who i'm very pleased to have met, likewise with the rest of the AoS crew even if i really didn't get very much of a chance to have more than a fleeting conversation which was unfortunate. I guess you got to see as many systems as i had minutes to chat to AoS members :D
Lol - I know. I'd have loved to have spent more time with you guys and gone for a few beers, but as you've seen, time just flies by! However, both of you are very welcome to visit Marco towers anytime, where you will be able to hear both the Celestions and Lockwoods in their natural habitat, as it were.
As for the AoS system, lets just say that after about midday it rocked ;) I thought i was hearing a very slight edge in the treble first thing, almost like there was a tiny bit of crap on the SPU tip. However on later listening it was totally fluid & sounded absolutely fantastic.
Interesting. I can only put that down to the warming up procedure. Systems always come on song more, in my experience, after a few hours of music have been put through them. As all the records played had been cleaned to within an inch of their lives before the show on the RCM (:eyebrows:), I doubt it would've been due to any crap on the tip of the SPU.
It was a bit of a revelation to hear vinyl with such a low & consistant background noise, i can see why RCMs are popular & of course the obligatory make-up brush... No - it truly did work, unfortunately i have so little vinyl it just wouldn't be worth the investment
Lol - yus, oi lurves me wee brush! But yes, RCM's do work wonders, as does proper 'record hygiene', says he who plonked a record directly onto the carpet after use, due to sheer laziness!
Nah, that was a one-off, due to not wanting to keep folk waiting for me to play the next record. I don't do that at home. Anyway, I'm glad that cleaning the records properly paid off and that all the hours spent doing it was worthwhile!
Nicks Nagra was frankly stunning & when it was first played which would have been early on i immediately nodded my head & thought "that's it"! This would have been mitigated later though as the Techie & SPU sounded wonderful..
Cheers, dude. Nick's Nagra was bloody wonderful, and for me (along with the Techie) hammered home analogue's superiority (when done well) over very good digital.
Steve's modded Eikos is one of the best CDPs I've heard - what it does with the texture and phrasing of vocals in particular is superb, but as good as it is (and my Sony combo applies here, too) it doesn't quite allow you to suspend disbelief in the musical performance, making you feel that what you're hearing is real, as opposed to merely an excellent recording of such, in the way of Nick's Nagra or the Techie.
But that's not a criticism of the Eikos, more of the sonic limitations of digital compared with analogue, as heard in our system. The Eikos is pretty much as good as it gets with a CD player.
I was absolutely mesmorised by the Pink Floyd and John Martyn recordings on Nick's Nagra - utterly enchanting!
The Ditton 66 frankly sounded huge which was a bit of a shock due to the room size, they still filled it though & did a superb job!
I know exactly what you mean!
When I saw the size of the room I was a bit worried that the copper amp would struggle to drive the Celestions to serious levels, due to the fact that they're not as big or efficient as the Lockwoods (after all it is 'only' a 40W valve amp), but once we'd got the speaker positioning reasonable (more on that in a minute) my concerns proved to be unfounded, although next year it'll be interesting to hear what the 66's do on the end of an SS muscle amp, such Martin's superb Chord!
By the way, i should have got you to play track 1 of that CD i brought along
Lol, no worries. Although I enjoyed the track, I was sitting there waiting for something major to happen, such as a big explosion, or some major deep bass to kick in, but it never really came....
I think as me & Alex discussed though i think you'd have had a slightly better sound if the 66s had been moved in towards the equipment by about a foot or so. This would have given a better image on the front row seating whilst still accomodating those standing behind the rear seating... Just imo of course..
Spot on! Not only in yours, but also mine. That's what I was referring to earlier when I mentioned I'd learned something about the room and how the Celestions had interacted with it. Some adjustments will definitely be made next year.
The trouble is that the Mana supports don't facilitate easy alternative positioning (as once the spikes bite into a carpet, it's difficult to move the supports into a different area without completely upsetting the positioning), and after having spent a good hour and a half optimising the speaker positioning, we were tired and faced with yet more farting about, or settling for where they were and going to the bar for a few beers... Undedicated lazy bastards that we were, we opted for the latter option! :eyebrows:
Next year, presuming we can get the same room, I'd do exactly as you say and also move them further back nearer the rear wall. That is how they work best chez-moi.
Other than that, top notch & yes 40W of class A valve amp does indeed go very loud :eyebrows: A normal front room would be a quarter of the volume so i think that just about says it all ;)
Indeed. Now just imagine what it sounds like at home in a much smaller room (albeit it having very good acoustics) with a dedicated mains set-up, more Mana, and also through the Lockwoods, which are much bigger and more efficient (and every bit as musical), and you'll appreciate how I can achieve SPLs far in excess of 100db, as well as making you feel queasy with the sheer physicality of the sound....! :eyebrows: :gig:
More comments tomorrow - off now to bo-bos!

Alex,
Don't apologise for your 'essay' - it sounds like you got a hell of a lot out of the day. What you've written makes a lot of sense and should be required reading!
Thanks.

I read it Alex :)
Alf: what did those Leak 'TL12+' amps sound like?
Just a quickie... Has anyone got a link to Noel Keywood's thoughts of the show in HFW? I saw a link earlier somewhere to it, but can't find it now.
Churz! :)

This room had no right to sound as good as it did, really, when you look at the challenge Alec had with such a narrow room. I believe Alec said that the entire system was less than a grand! It was difficult to get to listen properly due to the sheer number of people, (although in many rooms I'm sure the "human sound treatment" definitely helped!) but this system was really working well together, and I must say those Winchester's were a steal at £350.
Thanks for the kind words Chris (TGW) and for reading it Andre! :)
Andre - the Leaks weren't in use - look gorgeous, though!
Alfie - thanks for all the pics - great! (And Mark (Reid Malenfant's) linky earlier) - don''t feel so bad about leaving my camera in the AoS room for most of the show now!
Already see that me missed some interesting looking rooms - (BobC & Beeroclock's) which is a shame. There just isn't enough time!

This was one of the top 5 systems for me, and typified what I said about "clarity" - no doubt helped by the super-tweeters, and an ideal room. (The LP12 was playing when we visited.) "Electrostatics don't do bass" - umm, yes they do! Well, in this setup they did - Ok, not the slam of the 66's for instance, but certainly enough of the low end to dispel another hi-fi myth for me!
Just another point, and then I'll leave you alone for a bit!
An obvious observation, really, but visiting 40 odd systems really showed me how vital speaker placement is - or more accurately - ear placement. In most of the rooms, making sure my ears were level with the tweeters (if there were any!) was vital to get the best experience of the system in question. I found this was much more important in most cases than the horizontal plain, where the image would shift, but the tone remain the same. In some systems, the "sweet spot" was very small, but finding it, everything clicked into place. As I said, obvious really, but where you were in the room would make or break the experience.

..... i was really pleased to of at last litened to a mini T amp through Tannoys and swiftly bought one to play with there and then using my phone to do so ....
 Fantastic .... that l'il Mini-T did sound rather fine driving the Tannoy Lancasters, didn't it! £60 - ridiculous! :eyebrows:
.... who was the guy you were with who seemed pretty much dazed and gobsmacked by the sound of the Mini-T?!

Interesting essay, back there, Alex.
I totally agree that there is a real danger that as you go up in price, the system's become more 'hifi' and obvious sounding. No names - but there were several seriously high priced systems at Scalford where I was a bit shocked at how un-musical they were. Screech-tizz seems to cost one hell of a lot of money if you aren't careful!
[Of course ... one person's screech-tizz is another person's wonderfully detailed treble and in-the-room presence!]
... but then again, some of the rooms were way less than perfect. I was lucky to be in a pretty good room, and I am sure that helped a lot to get the most out of the system I played. Of course, good kit helps too. :eyebrows:
Yup, you were right - I kept my system simple and that paid big dividends, I suspect.
Good fun - roll on next year - a tentative plan is forming already for me to team up with a guy with lovely KEF 107.2 speakers.
Here's my 3 best piccies of the AoS kit.

Nobody was more gutted than I am that it was yet another year I couldn't get up to Scalford and join in the fun.
Mere words are simply not enough to convey what sounds could be heard there and as for the countless photos I have seen from so many well intentioned people, they convey even less information to someone like me who was unable to attend, so a big thanks to Alfie for at least putting the exhibitor's name, the room occupied and the kit list into the header caption. Bravo! Well done Sir!
What I am picking up from the many comments I have read is that one day simply isn't enough to get round the whole show, which is a great shame for the exhibitors tucked away in that rabbit warren of a place, while the "star systems" get plenty of coverage and pictures from poster after poster, which from the outside looking in, is starting to become a tad monotonous to be honest and I feel sorry for the folks that also did the same hauling and set up of their kit to the show yet failed to even get a small mention in dispatches.

yep - a damn shame it was on the other side of the country to you, Frank. 5 or 6 hours drive, I should think. :(
What I am picking up from the many comments I have read is that one day simply isn't enough to get round the whole show,
Very true - it could easily run for 2 days, and you'd still not really have enough time.
which is a great shame for the exhibitors tucked away in that rabbit warren of a place...
Well, no, not really.
I was tucked away on the 2nd floor. I know a lot of folks didn't make it to my room - but one hell of a lot of folks did. There was always some visitors in my room - and often enough it was damn crowded!
the doors opened at 10 and I was expecting it would take folks 1/2 hour or so to find their way up to me .... not a bit of it! At 2 minutes past 10 they started coming in!
Chris technobear was tucked away on the 1st floor in a bloody annexe to the hotel, really. The first time I tried to visit Chris I couldn't even get in 'cos of the crowds in, and waiting outside, his room!
I've spoken to quite a few folks who were tucked away elsewhere in the rabbit warren - and they too had no end of visitors.
.... while the "star systems" get plenty of coverage and pictures from poster after poster, ...... and I feel sorry for the folks that also did the same hauling and set up of their kit to the show yet failed to even get a small mention in dispatches.
Well, yes - but this is just forum crappola.
We all had our fave rooms - and quite a few of the smaller ones (including mine) have also got mentions here and on the Wigwam.
It really is the experience on the day that matters, I reckon. And I am 100% sure it was very very positive for pretty much everyone who showed their kit.
Cheers, Chris (and Andre, by PM). Interesting... Pity he never made it to our room :)
Marco.
Yes he did, you were on walkabout, he did a bit of a video.

Lumleys.
Eek - not my favourite speakers when John Jeffries of Sounds of Music (the designer) demo'd them to me some years ago. I hope they've improved.

Ah well ... the "II Signature" added extra value! :)
No - I've not owned any Lumley speakers.
I had a pair of John Jeffries' Lumley M120 valve monoblock amps, though. Very nice.

I read it Alex :)
Alf: what did those Leak 'TL12+' amps sound like?
Andre,
The Leaks did replace the Jadis CA30's later in the day, but I didn't get to hear them. At only 6 watts I thought they might struggle a little with the ESL57's. I've been told they drove them well & sounded very nice though.

Hi all,
Well, looks like a good time was had by all, which is what the Scalford Show is all about, Also it gives people the chance to meet up and put faces to the members who contribute to the main UK Audio forums etc. I am really sorry I couldn’t attend this year as not been very well lately, Really glad to hear that the AOS room was well received etc.
So a big up to Marco and the rest of the guys [Nick John etc] for their efforts, hopefully I will be there for the next one.
Last but not least a big thank you to people like Alfie etc for taking such great picks of the show and for sharing them with those of us who couldn’t attend for various reasons, much appreciated.:)

Thank you Alex :)

Both the Voyd, AI, Snell systems sounded fantastic to my ears! I did prefer the Snell Type E/II over the smaller Type K for shear scale but could happily live with either! The sound they were making would of meant that it would be on & playing 24/7!

Several Snells at the show. All sounding great which proves oldies can be goodies! Almost regretted selling my 3s!
But good to see/hear the Leak 3075s! Those, and the 57s were nicest?
Non-aggressive sound unlike some rooms,i thought.
Though I realised I'd missed the Apogees in the labyrinth!
I still liked my own system when I got home, which was nice!

We all really missed you this year, and TBH, although things went well, it wasn't the same. And besides, Beechy didn't quite suit the frock we'd reserved for you, and it wouldn't fit John! ;)
However, we'll make up for your absence big time next year! I'd love to hear your Soul amp driving the Celestions, which would act as a nice contrast to Martin's superb Chord. We could do half the day with each amp, which I'm sure would be very interesting...
We can also go for a curry and a few beers with the lads from Wigwam, so that should be a giggle!

Top marks to AOS for their room too-excellent sound. The first room I came across that had what I'd call a decent stereo sound-stage too. Lovely sounding system.

Being a 401 owner, I was keen to talk to Richard about his Russ Collinson plinth, which looks fabulous in the flesh, and considering it is the bottom of the range, hollow type, there was not a hint of rumble as far as I could hear. Richard was struggling a bit with the SME - you'll notice he was missing the spacer, (a replacement had been won on ebay, but the seller had let him down in getting it out to him) so it sat too low on the plinth, so the pillar had to be extended to it's fullest reach.
Like mine, the 401 is long overdue a service I believe, but it sounded fab through the amp and the little Royd's, producing one of those sounds that defied the size of the speakers - this was another of my favourites, and a system I could happily live with.
You know you need to get that 401 plinthed Alex

It was good to meet Adam, a thoroughly nice chap, and this was certainly one of the most interesting rooms, and Adam is to be commended for doing something different. The 70's kit looks fab, and sounded good too - the Panasonic amp was so shiny it looked like it was brand new! Adam commented that he was probably the only exhibitor not to have a remote control amplifier, but did have remote control turntables!
The Aiwa turntable was an intriguing device, as was the Sony - a technical masterpiece. I particularly liked the look of the wooden plinthed ADC (Accutrac 4000 I think?) with its "Space 1999" typeface on the control panel, Track selection buttons (yes, really!) and another one with remote control!

Those tiny drivers had no right to produce the amount of bass they did - the horns obviously doing what they were supposed to do! I was really pleased to see a 124 - they look unbreakable! The Fisher amp was something differennt, and it certainly sounded good overall.
(By the way, if I haven't commented on a system it is only because I don't really have much to say about it - for various reasons - i.e. couldn't get into the room properly, or by the time I got to listen to them my ears were shot! They were genuinely ringing on the way home - I think some rooms could maybe do with dropping the volume a little...?)

That Empire Troubador was an amazing deck at the time and sonically, a total Linn anihilator from memory. The arm was out of its time - far too massive for Empire's then top cartridge (2000Z), but this deck rocked brilliantly. A shame so very few made their way to the UK.

I missed a few things, such as the Apogees.
rabski's a 'friend', as we share interactions. He gets tempted by horns; then I get tempted by ELSs. So we tell each other NOT to be tempted, etc.
Yes, his system WAS lovely. I'm still trying to work out WHERE I could fit ANOTHER set of speakers......I had ELSs in 1980, before my Klipschorns for the following 25 years!

Nick: what tape you using on the Nagra..Maxell UD35-90? works best for me
Andr'e, funnily enough, nothing special. Quantegy 478. £6 a pop when I bought it. I think the trick is finding a tape that works with the bias of your deck. My Nagra is biased for broadcast tape, rather than the (what was more common, and now starting to become unobtanium) musical master tape. I've tried a few different ones and 478 is in the sweet spot of performance and price.

Well, I was very keen to hear the AVI's, as I know from discussions on here that they "divide opinion" (I think that's the polite way of saying it!)
Firstly, what a simple setup - If you need to have a decent sound in a cramped space, or if you move around a lot - perfect. That said, the system was very impressive - extremely musical, and accurate, no hint of any digital "harshness" (I think that's another hifi myth...) for such a digital system, and the non-AVI sub integrated very well. Another positive FBA and tiddly speaker experience!

What a fun room! Lego equipment stands, and the tiniest Tannoy's you've ever seen! Bear in mind that that's a netwbook, and it will give you an idea how small the Tannoys are (it's a 4" driver!) I did learn also that the current Aura brand is nothing to do with B&W - they sold the name to the Korean company April Music sometime ago.
The sound was ok, but didn't quite hit the spot for me - but then it was getting to "ears tired" time. Got a bit of a shock though when I checked the price of the little Tannoys - £1,500! The Aura Note was also £1,500 new, so suddenly you've got an expensive pairing. But I don't think that's the point - hugely entertaining in their own way.
(Thanks for the kind comments Martin, I'll carry on, then, as the photos appear! I might think about joining a freak show, actually Nick!)

Dean is clearly a music fan first and foremost - piles of records and CDs. I can't remember exactly the track that was playing - some sort of reggae I think? (Mark may be able to help here?) - it was a very old recording, might even have been mono? That made it difficult to be objective about the system, but it certainly sounded fine, and that Avid is a lovely looking turntable.
.... who was the guy you were with who seemed pretty much dazed and gobsmacked by the sound of the Mini-T?!
If i told you i would have to kill you, lets just say he's a legend in the valve world and currently works for a very high end firm, he has a very good set of ears and we tend to agree on most things,
I just found the Mini T very enjoyable and made a complete mockery of some so called high end kit, i know its not perfect and ultamately lacks a bit of bottom end but what do you expect it's only 60 bloody quid, i've had 20k plus amps here that don't sound so musical, its probably going on the end of a Audio Note Valve pre amp going into my Tannoys, we shall see what happens, time will tell if i can live with one though :)

Dear All,
Just wanted to say a big 'thank you' to those who took part on Sunday. It was my first Scalford experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed it :) I have now settled on my 'show' fixes; Whittlebury at the end of the year and Scalford at the start. Judging by the numbers in attendance, it certainly seems to have the legs to continue. I like the AoS idea of trying different things, different themes...
Some of the sounds to be heard were remarkable; my first experience of Tannoys 'in the field' was revelatory; first room and what a benchmark! :) I popped into the AoS room in the afternoon and was highly impressed with the Celestions and the kit feeding them - Marco, the Technics looks stunning and is exceptionally quiet - the Mike New mods have worked beautifully...and as for the Nagra...:stalks:
Loved Adam's retro room - you could sense his passion for what he does and the sounds were delightful, especially from the Cambridge CD1. I'm sure I read that Stan Curtis cast the mechanism himself in his kitchen (okay, I made the kitchen bit up, but I'm sure he did it )
Loved the AR turntable; sounded wonderful and looked beautiful - stunning veneering job.
All in all, a great show. I'm not so good at cold introductions, so apologies for not introducing myself  However, I look forward to next year...a great concept and a thoroughly enjoyable day out. Thank you.
Paul.
Echoing all of the positive comments about the day, it was indeed a 'Grand Day Out' and I had a total ball, as I have for the previous 2 years of this Show.
I managed to grab a 5 mins natter with Marco at the start of the day, and was really disappointed to not get time to have another quick listen to the 66's later in the day. Still, they were sounding very good indeed at 9.30am on the Sunday. I've a real soft spot for these speakers - an old school mate's dad had a pair of these and I was always in awe of them.
As to 'my day' I had great fun again - tried to spin as much different sorts of music as possible, from Debussy Images to AC/DC and the little Royds didn't let me down. I adore these wee speakers, and sincerely can't ever see me parting with them. The 401 also behaved itself all day, holding its speed pretty much spot on once it was warmed up (about 30 mins from cold) and despite what must have been some pretty badly polluted mains in the hotel, it ran steady as a rock.
Looking forward to next year. :)

Your system was fab, Richard - one of my favourites (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=194724&postcount=354), and you should rightly be pleased! If you do ever decide to part with the Merlins, please add my name to the waiting list - I'm sure there are plenty of other people who have offered to take them off your hands before me! :)

Thanks Alex - you're very kind. :o
I've always maintained that system matching is a somewhat inexact science so have always relied upon my ears to tell me everything about what does and doesn't 'go'. Fortunately I've managed to hit a sweet stop every so often - it's not always worked out but gladly, at the moment, the rig is in a fairly settled phase.
As to selling the little Merlins - you'll have to join a long queue I'm afraid. ;)

Nice write up - sorry Steve for teasing you about the cable touching the skirting board! ;)
I think Steve would have heart failure if he saw my cabling behind the scenes. I simply can't avoid some of them touching the wall and many of them (interconnects, speaker, mains) lying alongside each other.
Ah well, I'll take the opportunity to tidy the runs when I rip it all apart to try Mark Grant's balanced cables when they're ready <cough>.

What about this statement from Steve !
Oh, one more thing, as much as the praise of our system felt good, the speakers played only a very small part. If a system is setup properly using good components and ancilliaries, any old ropey pair of speakers will do...
Was he not too keen on the 66's then ?
LOL! Far from that - he loved them (much like everyone else) :)
What he was getting at was the fact that people were attributing the good sound we produced mainly to the sonic qualities of the speakers, and somewhat ignoring the (huge) influence everything else was having, particularly our attention to detail in terms of cabling, supports, and 'mains management'.
It's that attention to detail which Our Ethos here (and also that of AF) is all about, and speakers aside, the results we achieved speak for themselves...
I will tackle the problems with having a speaker-first philosophy to system building later, but it's safe to say that I think people should consider spending less on the boxes (and yes, also speakers) which make up a system, and more on ensuring that they're able to hear the full potential of whatever equipment and speakers are chosen in the first place. That is only achieved through optimising the set-up.
Experience tells me, time and time again, that a system containing well-chosen, yet fairly inexpensive (or not outrageously priced) boxes and speakers, set-up optimally, always outperforms a mish-mash of overpriced 'audiophile jewellery', badly, or less optimally, set-up - FACT!
Ok, so the AoS system we demonstrated wasn't exactly cheap, but neither was its total cost equivalent to the value of large detached house, as are some systems demonstrated at commercial hi-fi shows!!
I mean, has anyone heard as good a sound from the system demonstrated in the Absolute Sounds room at Whittlebury Hall, often totalling a cost high into six figures, as we achieved in the AoS room at Scalford with a pair of totally unmodified 1970s speakers? Think about it, and then wonder why I always bang on about 'badge-fi' and SPPV ;)

Utter bollocks, that what it is. I have NEVER heard a bigger difference in sound by changing say, a cd player, than I have by swapping out speakers. If this were even remotely true Steve would flog the big tannoys and spend the money on flash mains leads and a pair of Kef Coda's! Plus, please stop going on and on and on about bloody straw men!!! Every bloody post you make you are going on about them,,,,I know you are reading this so from now on I will refer to you as the scarecrow, then everyone will know what I mean, straw man indeed!!
Hi Adam,
I missed that when I read the original thread!
Lol - it was a somewhat tongue-in-cheek remark designed to draw people's attention away from just the speakers being largely, or even solely, responsible for the sound we achieved.
That's a notion we will be dispelling next year when we'll be inviting other exhibitors to bring along any of their own speakers to use, and see what influence that has on our system.........
It will undoubtedly change the tonal and 'hi-fi presentation' aspects of the system, but its musical communication qualities (largely attributable to what's happening upstream and how that's optimised through judiciously selected ancillaries and correct set-up) will still be present - regardless of the speakers used (unless they're utterly bereft of merit)! :eyebrows:
Testament to this is the fact that I use a pair of much smaller Celestions (15XRs), from the same range as the 66s, downstairs in my lounge.
And with the 15XRs downstairs in the lounge, on the end of my system upstairs, scale and size of sound aside (one cannot defeat the laws of physics), the sonic qualities and music-making ability of my system (largely consisting of the components demonstrated at Scalford Hall) is very similar to what's achieved when I pop the 66's on the end of the same system, either upstairs in my listening room or downstairs in the lounge......
Go figure! ;)
Right, gotta go - back later!
Marco.
Meanwhile, another interesting thread, showing the AoS system (and others from the Scalford show) on the Martin Logan Owners forum:
http://www.martinloganowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11995
Check the vids out, and in particular, the one where the Techie is playing 'Dissidents' by Thomas Dolby... DSJR should enjoy this, as he loves my 'plump and syrupy' sounding SPU!! :eyebrows:
Marco.
I can see both sides of the ancillaries right with any speaker vs speakers totally change things views, but ultimately, the room-speaker match is the final arbiter for me...
I once heard a well sorted (by an acoustician who cares) room where some cheapo Heybrook HB1's and baby Wharfedales (I forget which ones now, but they could have been 505's?) sounded practically as good (within volume reason) as some ATC actives like mine were. Both sounded better than I was getting (and with similar driving electronics and cabling) and it was this that showed me how important speaker-room matching really is.
Having said the above, in a vinyl based system certainly, IMo it's USELESS having a collection of superb gear and not setting it up correctly - and that goes for gear at any age or price. The fact that much old gear which is still working well sounds better than it ever did new is testament to that I reckon..
So to conclude my mini-essay, Get speakers which will work the room right and THEN set the system up to within an inch (oh alright, a centimetre) of its life. You'll have the best of both worlds then :)
Is that, in a roundabout way, you conceding that the SPU doesn't in fact sound anything like you decribed, daftee-chops? ;)
Next year, get yer arse to the show, as I'd like to meet you (that is if you don't dissolve, implode or something, outside of bloody Suffolk)!
Marco.
After coming back from the show I have never been more content with my set-up.
There was so much diversity and excellence I didn't know what I might like to try next.
So my modest gear suits me fine ;)
Mind you that Nagra reel to reel was good and what about that Rega P9 :eyebrows:

I entirely agree Marco; far too many people confuse quantitative judgements with qualitative ones (often those who erroneously believe that the speakers are the defining component of a system).
Glad you agree, Mark. Some other folks probably wouldn't, though. I think much depends on what you're looking for in music reproduction, and what your sensibilities and experience dictate as being the best approach.
Personally, I would always place appropriate (I choose that word carefully ;)) emphasis on the quality of the source and control components, and how they're set-up, as well as ensuring that there are transducers on the end of the system capable of faithfully reproducing the musical message, derived further upstream! :)
Marco.
Some other folks probably wouldn't.
Ha, yes indeed - but then there are a lot of 'wrong' people in the world ;).
Marco, as you know, I was once very strongly of the 'Flat Earth' fraternity and, to be honest, I still am to a large extent. What people get wrong is that they think this means Linn and Naim - but the concept is broader than that (I'm not even sure Linn still adhere to the FE philosophy). In my experience, two system maxims still ring true; 1/ Crap in, crap out and, 2/ a system is only as strong as its weakest link. The speakers are rarely the weakest link in my experience (though the positioning, and support, of those speakers often is). Although one may think that my idea of what makes a good system would be diametrically opposed to those of valve owners, in fact the opposite is true and I often find my thoughts and feelings quite closely aligned with theirs.

That has always worked for me over very many years. If you don't have it further upstream the speakers can never reproduce it.
I generally would still be a source first then pre-amplifier type of guy......:sofa:

from the other angle .. if the speakers are not up to it.. are they reproducing 'it' upsteam...
without quality amps and speakers you can't hear whats missing...
same as if you have a poor source with the best speakers in the world,
There are no amps that i've heard that don't act as some sort of filter, or add something thats not supposed to be there
so amplification always seems key to me...
I know it does matter whats feeding the system, but the system is the sum of all the parts..
Yes I would not disagree with any of that I just think what you can do on a realistic budget in the digital domain means you can easily put more of your budget on the speakers, so something like the Caiman with the mods deserves a lot better speaker these days
I thought that the 'flat earth' source-first argument always assumed that you were going to progressively upgrade the components after the source. If so, then surely concentrating on getting as much information into the reproduction chain at the start as possible make sense as each successive upgrade to the other components reveals more of the source.
However, if you aren't going to upgrade relentlessly, I'd have thought to obtain a satisfying system you need a more balanced approach?
I thought that the 'flat earth' source-first argument always assumed that you were going to progressively upgrade the components after the source.
No, not necessarily; I mean, obviously, a lot of people did upgrade in that manner, but that wasn't the idea as such.
So when The Flat Response suggested LP12/LVX/Basik + NAD3020 + Goodmans Maxim II, some people left it at that

As Linn dealers back in the 70's and 80's, we used to demonstrate the 'rubbish in, rubbish out' system by using the LP12/Ittok/Asak, Creek 4040 (in our case) and the Wharfedale Diamonds. Sure enough, you heard the best pair of Diamonds you ever heard in your life but then we used to show the customers our preferred system.
Bung on a Rega Planar-3, same Creek 4040 and a sodding great pair of SD Acoustics SD2 with their 12 inch paper cones and high sensitivity. Whack on Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Relax and pump up de volume. Stand back and watch the customers faces as they started to grin.
To my knowledge we never sold the Diamond system but we sold heaps and heaps of the 'Relax' system...:lolsign:
Did it work on any music other than FGtH?
hifi_dave
24-03-2011, 20:32
That was THE music of the time, followed by Two Tribes. Both very powerful, dynamic recordings which showed instantly the superiority of the big SD's against the puny Wharfedales.
At that time there were masses of 12 inch singles which we used to great effect. Also very good at CD v turntable dems. Of course, we used plenty of other discs which were popular with the lads coming in on a Saturday to buy a good hi-fi system.
Two Tribes is probably one of the best 12" singles I've ever heard for sound quality.
My system is decidedly low-fi, but I only realised how good it could be with a pair of "proper" speakers... My biggest upgrade ever.
Yes - only speakers can really determine scale.

Yes - only speakers can really determine scale.
Oh so true :eyebrows: You may get a great sound from something small & a superb front end, but for sheer scale & impact you need to move some air ;)
Indeed, guys (I think we successfully demonstrated that at Scalford Hall :eyebrows:), but I wouldn't use bigger (and/or better) speakers without having first ensured that the system was capable of properly resolving the subtleties and complexities of the source music signal......
And that is not as easy to achieve as some people think! At least to the standards I would be seeking.
Give me smaller, 'musically capable' speakers, on the end of a very good source and amp, any day over a mediocre source and amp driving bigger speakers. The former will reproduce believable music, and the latter more likely only capable of making an 'impressive' noise.
Differentiating between a sound that resembles real music, and one which is perhaps only good for a party, is what separates truly discerning enthusiasts from those who are merely playing at it! ;)
