Went up to maplin for some bits of modding my dyns - needed 16 banana plug sockets ... They had 3 ... Useless!
Anyway whilst there I noticed they had 15v 4amp smps in the Christmas sale - little sign saying "ideal Xmas gift - was £34.99 now £19.99. I'm not sure in who's world a smps is a "ideal Xmas present" ... Still I was happy to find it as it will provide my x10-d 12v and 5amps if it need it.

My queery is - I'm sure I read somewhere 13.5v would be better for the x10-d - what is likely to give me more benefit 12v and 5amps or 13.5v and 4amps ... Is it safe to just suck it and see, I don't want to break anything!

The answer to your query is...............

...........the X10-d will not be drawing anything like 4amps, so either voltage should suffice.
If it goes pop on 13.5vdc don't blame me - you suggested it first.

Can i ask what an X10-D is? I might be able to give you a better answer ;)

The X10-D expects AC. A simple but hefty transformer is all that's needed.

Clive, could you be decent enough to fill me in on what an X10-D is?

I have heard of an X1, X2 & X15, but obviously they are nothing like an X10-D unless Hamish has a secret rocket plane building program going on we know nothing about :eyebrows:

Thanks for the possible reply :)

Sure Mark,

It s valve buffer, high impedance input, gain 0.9.

One of those impedance matching thingys we're told we can't do without! :)

Thanks for the tip Hamish, I'm sure the wife will love it instead of all that tacky gold and diamonds she usually wants - I can't wait to see her face! I owe you one!

Thank you Clive :)

Valves on 12V??? WTF

From now on i'll keep my nose out but frankly i'm surprised, as they need an AC input is there some kind of step up transformer or voltage doubling/tripling going on?

I fully agree that if this is the case then only feed it AC or it won't work :eyebrows:

Yes, there's a voltage doubler, it ends up with 30-odd volts on ECC88s, IIRC.

Clive (who once owned my X10-D) is quite correct about 12V-AC.. I used a Christmas tree 4A supply for a while until my home made one was done. That wall-wart is a bit naff tbh...

I had a thread here regarding my X10-D conversion, but here's a pic or two...

and the temporary transformer I found.

Dave,
It's either nicely re-sprayed or you've hidden the part that suffered the accident with the logging saw.:)

I turned the case round. Hidden in the cabinet, the marks cannot be seen. Love it and the Croft's tape output really appreciates the buffering ;)

Ah I see ... So it's not suitable anyway ... Fair enough ... I'll try again

My old valve radio worked on a 12V Berec battery. Alrite, so some of you might be too young to remember the Berec brand:lol:.

Is this the smps:

Looks like something that would work well with a gainclone amp. Although not sure the 15v would be enough.

It's the power supply that used to be £19.99. But then I recommended it as an upgrade fro the original TC-7510 DAC, and soon after that Maplin increased the price to £34.99.

I should have tried one with the Lentek, as I spent about the same ampount buying an ABS case, sockets, transformer and ebay regulator, only to find the regulator not quiet enough. I hope it will be ok for two J-FETS on my basic high input impedance line driver..
