Hello all from Bristol UK

Hi all ,

I'm Robert , an enthusiastic radio listener , mostly of the BBC , but lately starting to explore Internet Radio (I've bought a Squeezebox).

I started listening to Radio 4 on Long Wave on some old valve sets , acquired some stereo VHF gear (Quad FM4 , Quad 2 valve amps , 22 controller and Tannoy 12" Monitor Gold in Lancaster cabs) and then a 300b valve amp for playing cds.

I'm very non-techie ; just love radio and the valve sound. I'd really appreciate any pointers in exploring internet radio further.

Welcome to the Art of Sound!
There are one or two Quad-centric folks here and quite a few of us love radio too. There are plenty of folks dabbling fairly seriously with computer audio but above all, it's a very friendly place to be, so you may just have found your perfect spot on the internet.

Hi Rob, or robert, or even mr shovel, if we are being extra formal. Good to see someone calling a spade a spade, and telling us exactly what we want to know about their system, and what brings you here. I have to be a bit careful, as my welcome posts can dig me a bit of a hole, and I try not to upset people on their first visit.

Apart from Radio 4, what other types of programming do you like to plough through? Might help us to unearth a few suggestions so we can plant a seed or two if you tell us what sort of music you like. There's a lot out there to rake through, so if you can give us a bit more of info that will help us to weed out what you don't like. No doubt there's plenty of great stations we can find for you without you having to fork out for it.

This is a great forum, we hardly ever dish the dirt and you'll find everyone very friendly and eager to help. Our roots are firmly based on a sense of community, though not everyone takes a leaf out of my book when saying hello - which you may be grateful for! Enjoy your stay!

Tastes are pretty broad really ; although I dont listen to a lot of heavy metal!

I like BBC radio 2 and 3 for music , and 4 for spoken word.

I like 'Radio Paradise' and 'WFMU' so far on the Internet.

I also like film soundtracks as i'm a keen cinema goer.

Funnily enough, I don't really listen to radio much at all at home.
When I do it's the usual suspects - mainly Auntie with the 2nd program, occasionally R3 and R4.

I thought that the Robert Plant concert broadcast last Friday evening was superb (it's on iPlayer if you missed it).

In the car I've been listening to Rock Radio Manchester (106.1 FM) rather a lot, but I can't recommend the internet stream for that station - it sounds pants because the bitrates are woefully inadequate.
Which is a shame, as rock is a broad church, and Rock Radio Manchester is quite catholic in its programming.

Hello Robert, it's good to say hello to another member from Bristol... I hesitate to say Bristolian as most people in Bristol seem newcomers these days (myself included!).

I'm a big WFMU fan too, strangely enough. As experimental / leftfield radio goes it's got to be the best. I came across it via the Do or DIY show, which regularly hosts spots from UK sound artist Vicky Bennett (People Like Us), but as a station it's so eclectic. The only thing that comes close in the UK is Resonance FM (http://resonancefm.com/listen). WFMU's online archives are unequalled though. It's a shame all this stuff is only available via internet streams to all but the lucky ones who live locally to the transmitters.

From what you've said your system deserves to have some pictures posted up in The Gallery (http://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14). Those Lancasters sound like they're interesting!

Rob popped along to Chateau Jerry yesterday after we had bumped into each other on another forum. Rob mentioned that he found that forum a little too, err, "robust" at times :eyebrows: .... so I suggested he pop along here for a rather more relaxed and genteel hifi forum experience.

Tannoys, valves .... it has to be AOS!! :mental:

Thanks Jerry, it has become something of a hobby lately for me to make my welcome posts a little more "interesting" than normal! Hopefully I won't scare anyone off! (And yes, I have been taking enhancement pills. Oh hang on, you said brain... :o)

what a coincidence! not just bristol but i heard my first blast of resonance fm just a few hours ago. pictures may take a while as a lot of my stuff is in storage at present.

There seems to be a few AoS members down here in Bristol.
Radio Paradise is excellent isn’t it.
I tend to listen to Radio 4 on FM for some reason; sort of got to like the hiss and distortion probably.
Tannoy speakers seem to be popular around here. I must get to listen to a pair one day :scratch:
