For those of you who think that a 90W per channel T-Amp doesnt have the "minerals" for your application, then fear not.

Hlly have just introduced something a little bigger (http://www.hllyaudio.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=264).

Yes saw that elsewhere. It certainly looks very nice on paper, and as a fan of Tripath I am very interested. I wish they would stop using those garish 'anti-vandal' push buttons though.

Funny that but they have missed out a certain specification :scratch:

They are quoting 1000W into 4 ohms bridged, if that's the case it'll drive 2 ohm loads on each channel at 500W ;)

I can't say the transformer & wiring look as though they'll be up to the job though :eyebrows: The transformer looks way too small & the wiring too thin to support 44.7 Amp peak :mental:

l too have become a fan of the Tripath sound does anybody know if this beast has remote control, does it come in silver and is that 90w per channel, this looks very interesting indeed!:cool:

No,this one's a little more powerful at 1000w into 4 ohms.

I doesn't say :doh: However a look at the back of the unit on the website shows multiple inputs, & seeing as there appears to be no input selector on the front panel i guess it must be done via a remote control ;)

there is more writing below the volume knob. 'Menu' maybe? perhaps you press the knob in and then turn it select the input?

Good point Steve, well spotted ;) There is a rather large window on the front panel as well which could certainly have a remote sensor behind it.

No way of knowing unless someone contacts them in reality :)

Just bear in mind the 220v power supply. Not enough for the likes of us.

Yes, impressive spec ... but what does it sound like, eh? ;)

I borrowed Hamish's HLLY Tamp-90 t-amp and compared it to my TA2020 Mini-T amp ....

Yes, the Tamp-90 had more welly and more powerful bass.

But the Mini-T has (imo :)) much better transparency, speed and rez across the whole bandwidth, especially in the crucial midband.
There's really no doubt at all which provides more musical satisfaction for me. Yep, I'm still using a pair of bi-amped Mini-T amps (total cost about a Łton) with my umpty-ump-Łk speakers :mental: - and loving it! :carrot:

I was just making the point that there is more to good sound than power output.

Based on my very limited experience with t-amps, I would have to say that there is some evidence that the general amplification rule of thumb (broken many times, of course!) of higher power leading to relatively poorer sound seems to be a reasonable guideline for t-amps as well.

I, too, would like TA2020 chip sound with more welly. It's just that I'm not prepared to give up what makes the TA2020 so exceptional imo, for a more powerful sound.

Others will have different priorities, of course, and much depends on other components in the system, but for me transparency, speed and rez are at the top of the list - and those the Mini-T TA2020 amp delivers in spades, albeit with limited power output.

But, yes, I'd love to hear a T-300! :eek: But it will have its work cut out to supplant the TA2020 chipped Mini-T in my affections.

I would agree with Marks comments regarding the PSU wiring looking a little light weight and the rest of the wiring being a bit untidy.

There are a number of threads on DIYAudio suggesting the TA 2050 chip is rather good and having more welly than the 2020 chip.

It's the "Up to" that may well give a better overall picture ;)

That's probably peak output power, there is no mention in the specifications of RMS power anywhere that i can see ;)

So assuming 1000W peak at 1% distortion that'd probably translate into 400W RMS @ 0.1% THD into 4ohms

Or if you like, 120W RMS per channel (allowing for less PSU sag due to lower current requirements) into 4ohms @ 0.1% THD, 65W RMS 8ohms :eyebrows:

It looks in much better keeping with the size of the PSU & storage capacitors ;)
